INSPECTION
Installation and Inspection of Torque Converter
After inserting a torque converter to a A/T, be sure to check dis-
tance “A” to ensure it is within the reference value limit.
INSTALLATION
Install the removed parts in the reverse order of the removal, while paying attention to the following work.
When installing A/T assembly to the engine assembly, attach the
fixing bolts in accordance with the following standard.
Align the positions of tightening bolts for drive plate with those of
the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the bolts. Then,
tighten the bolts with the specified torque. Refer to AT- 2 7 8 ,
"COMPONENTS" .
CAUTION:
When turning crankshaft, turn it clockwise as viewed from
the front of the engine.
When tightening the tightening bolts for the torque con-
verter after fixing the crankshaft pulley bolts, be sure to
confirm the tightening torque of the crankshaft pulley
mounting bolts. Refer to EM-74, "
INSTALLATION" .
After converter is installed to drive plate, rotate crankshaft
several turns and check to be sure that A/T rotates freely without binding.
Install crankshaft position sensor (POS). Refer to EM-38, "Removal and Installation (AWD Models)" .
After completing installation, check A/T fluid leakage, A/T fluid level and A/T position. Refer to AT- 1 3 ,
"Checking A/T Fluid" , AT- 2 2 8 , "Checking of A/T Position" . Distance “A”: 25.0 mm (0.98 in) or more

To prevent serious burns:
Avoid contact with hot metal parts.
Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
Dispose of or recycle drained oil or the solvent used for cleaning
parts in an appropriate manner.
Do not attempt to top off the fuel tank after the fuel pump nozzle
shuts off automatically.
Continued refueling may cause fuel overflow, resulting in fuel
spray and possibly a fire.
Clean all disassembled parts in the designated liquid or solvent
prior to inspection or assembly.
Replace oil seals, gaskets, packings, O-rings, locking washers, cotter pins, self-locking nuts, etc. with new
ones.
Replace inner and outer races of tapered roller bearings and needle bearings as a set.
Arrange the disassembled parts in accordance with their assembled locations and sequence.
Do not touch the terminals of electrical components which use microcomputers (such as ECM).
Static electricity may damage internal electronic components.
After disconnecting vacuum or air hoses, attach a tag to indicate the proper connection.
Use only the fluids and lubricants specified in this manual.
Use approved bonding agent, sealants or their equivalents when required.
Use hand tools, power tools (disassembly only) and recom-
mended special tools where specified for safe and efficient ser-
vice repairs.
When repairing the fuel, oil, water, vacuum or exhaust systems,
check all affected lines for leaks.
Before servicing the vehicle:
Protect fenders, upholstery and carpeting with appropriate cov-
ers.
Take caution that keys, buckles or buttons do not scratch paint.
WARNING:
To prevent ECM from storing the diagnostic trouble codes, do not carelessly disconnect the harness
connectors which are related to the engine control system and TCM (transmission control module)
system. The connectors should be disconnected only when working according to the WORK FLOW of
TROUBLE DIAGNOSES in EC and AT sections.
Precautions for Three Way CatalystNAS0009G
If a large amount of unburned fuel flows into the catalyst, the catalyst temperature will be excessively high. To
prevent this, follow the instructions.
Use unleaded gasoline only. Leaded gasoline will seriously damage the three way catalyst.
When checking for ignition spark or measuring engine compression, make tests quickly and only when
necessary.

Changing A/T FluidNLS00081
1. Warm up ATF.
2. Stop engine.
3. Loosen the level gauge bolt.
4. Drain ATF from drain plug and refill with new ATF. Always refill
same volume with drained ATF.
To replace the ATF, pour in new ATF at the A/T fluid charging
pipe with the engine idling and at the same time drain the old
ATF from the radiator cooler hose return side.
When the color of the ATF coming out is about the same as
the color of the new ATF, the replacement is complete. The
amount of new ATF to use should be 30 to 50% increase of
the stipulated amount.
CAUTION:
Use only genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF. Do not mix with other ATF.
Using ATF other than genuine NISSAN Matic J ATF will cause deterioration in driveability and
automatic transmission durability, and may damage the automatic transmission, which is not
covered by the warranty.
When filling ATF, take care not to scatter heat generating parts such as exhaust.
Do not reuse drain plug gasket.
5. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes.
6. Check A/T fluid level and condition. Refer to AT- 1 3 , "
Checking A/T Fluid" . If ATF is still dirty, repeat step 2.
through 5.
7. Install the removed A/T fluid level gauge into A/T fluid charging pipe.
8. Tighten the level gauge bolt.
Checking Transfer FluidNLS00082
Check for fluid leakage and fluid level.
(For details, refer to TF-9, "
Inspection" .)

REMOVAL
1. Remove exhaust front tube with power tool. Refer to EX-3, "EXHAUST SYSTEM" .
2. Remove front and rear propeller shaft. Refer to PR-4, "
FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT" and PR-6, "REAR
PROPELLER SHAFT" .
3. Disconnect transfer assembly harness connector and separate harness from transfer assembly.
4. Remove air breather hose. Refer to TF-43, "
AIR BREATHER HOSE" .
5. Remove control rod. Refer to AT- 2 2 6 , "
Control Rod Removal and Installation" .
6. Support transfer assembly and transmission assembly with a jack.
7. Remove rear engine mounting member and engine mounting insulator with power tool. Refer to EM-114,
"ENGINE ASSEMBLY" .
8. Lower jack to the position where the top transfer mounting bolts
can be removed.
9. Remove transfer mounting bolts with power tool and separate
transfer from transmission.
CAUTION:
Secure transfer assembly and transmission assembly to a
jack.
INSTALLATION
Note the following, and install in the reverse order of removal.
When installing the transfer to the transmission, install the
mounting bolts following the standard below.
After the installation, check the fluid level, fluid leakage and the
A/T positions. Refer to TF-9, "
Inspection" ,AT- 2 2 7 , "Adjustment
of A/T Position" .
