Selecting display of route map
You can also select a map showing your
travel route while the system is guiding you
to your destination.
1.Select "Navigation" and press the con-
troller
2.Select "Map, facing north" and press
the controller.
Changing scale
Turn the controller.
The map scale appears on the Control Dis-
play.
Altering display direction
At scales of less than 300 miles/500 km,
you enjoy the option of deciding whether to
orient the map to north or toward your cur-
rent direction of travel. From 300 miles/
500 km, the map always points toward
north.
Select "Map, facing north" or "Map, direc-
tion of travel" and press the controller.
Displaying towns and
streets of the route
You can have streets and towns on your
route displayed whenever the destination
guidance is active.
The distances remaining to be traveled on
each individual road, directional arrows
and traffic jam reports are also displayed.

If the system has not yet completely
defined the travel route, "..." will appear in
the list.
To exit the menu:

You can adjust the volume of the voice
instructions for each specific key:

The navigation system's voice guidance
will continue to issue instructions at this
volume level, even if the radio is set to min-
imum volume.
Blocking sections of a route
During destination guidance you can revise
the navigation system's route recommen-
dations to avoid particular stretches of
road. Enter the number of miles/kilometers
that you want to travel before returning to
the original route.

2.Turn the controller to enter the desired
number of miles/kilometers and press
the controller.
To exit from the menu without changing
the route:

Satellite radio*
You can receive up to 100 different chan-
nels with high tone quality.
You can listen to one of these channels free
of charge at any time to obtain a first
impression. The channel is marked

To listen to additional channels of your
choice, you must have these channels acti-
vated.

To continue a call on the portable phone
using hands-free unit:
Insert the portable phone with the lid
opened in the cradle.
To continue a call on the hands-free unit
using the portable phone:
Take the portable phone with the lid
opened out of the cradle.
The call is ended as soon as you take the
phone from the cradle with a closed lid.
Volume adjustment
You can adjust the volume for the hands-
free unit for each individual key:
Turn the button during a call to select the
desired volume.
The hands-free unit will remain at this vol-
ume level, even if the other audio sources
are set to minimum volume.
Operation using the Control

Entering unlock code
If, after placing the BMW portable phone in
the cradle, you are requested by a mes-
sage from the Control Display to enter the
unlock code:
1.Select "Phone" and press the controller
2.To enter the unlock code: select digits
individually and press the controller.
Each digit of the unlock code is dis-
played on the Control Display with an
asterisk.
Telephoning

Touch tone dialing
Touch tone numbers are required for
access to network services or to control
devices, e.g. remote querying on an
answering machine.
This function can only be used during an
existing connection.
1.To establish a connection
2.Press the controller
3.Select "Keypad" and press the control-
ler
4.Select the desired digits and press the
controller.
Each digit is sent immediately.
Text messages/SMS
Text messages/SMS are displayed as long
as the portable phone is engaged.
The symbol on the Control Display
shows that you have received a new text
message. It goes out as soon as there are
no longer any unread text messages.
The number of text messages that can be
stored depends on the memory capacity of
your BMW portable phone.
Displaying text messages/SMS
1.Select "SMS" and press the controller.
The list of received text messages is
displayed on the Control Display.
The symbol
indicates unread text
messages
2.Select the desired text message and
press the controller.
The text message is displayed.
To close the text message:
Move the controller forwards to select
and press the controller.
Calling the sender
1.Select the desired text message and

The text message is displayed

Operation by voice control*
The concept
You can operate your phone without having
to remove your hands from the steering
wheel. The system operates on the basis of
voice commands that you will learn easily
after using them a few times. In addition,
you are also supported by instructions or
questions.
Symbols used
Voice commands
In ignition key position 2:
1.Briefly press the button on the steer-
ing wheel.
A sound signal indicates operating
readiness
2.Speak voice commands.To have the system list the voice com-
mands possible in each case:
Canceling operation via voice
control
Briefly press the button on the steering
wheel or
In dialogs where text of any kind can be
spoken, e.g. a name, canceling is only pos-
sible using the button. This is automati-
cally interrupted when an incoming call is
received.
Voice commands
In addition to the commands described in
this Owner's Manual, alternative com-
mands are often possible for the same
functions, e.g.:
Digits from zero to nine are understood.
You can say each digit individually or group
them into a sequence of three to five digits
to accelerate the input.
