Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”
BBS004WR
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of
this Service Manual.
WARNING:
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.
Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.
Precautions for Liquid GasketBBS004WS
REMOVAL OF LIQUID GASKET SEALING
After removing mounting nuts and bolts, separate the mating
surface using seal cutter (SST) and remove old liquid gasket
sealing.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.
Tap seal cutter to insert it, and then slide it by tapping on the
side as shown in the figure.
In areas where seal cutter (SST) is difficult to use, use plastic
hammer to lightly tap the parts, to remove it.
CAUTION:
If for some unavoidable reason tool such as screwdriver is
used, be careful not to damage the mating surfaces.
LIQUID GASKET APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1. Using scraper, remove old liquid gasket adhering to the liquid
gasket application surface and the mating surface.
Remove liquid gasket completely from the groove of the liquid
gasket application surface, mounting bolts, and bolt holes.
2. Wipe the liquid gasket application surface and the mating sur-
face with white gasoline (lighting and heating use) to remove
adhering moisture, grease and foreign materials.
3. Attach liquid gasket tube to tube presser (SST).
Use Genuine Liquid Gasket or equivalent.
4. Apply liquid gasket without breaks to the specified location with
the specified dimensions.
If there is a groove for the liquid gasket application, apply liq-
uid gasket to the groove.

DIFFERENTIAL SIDE OIL SEAL
INSTALLATION
1. As shown below, use a drift to drive the differential side oil seal
into the case until it is flush. Refer to dimensions A.
Unit: mm (in)
NOTE:
The differential side oil seal pulling direction is used as the refer-
ence.
Drift to be used:
CAUTION:
When installing differential side oil seals, apply NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-2.
Do not reuse differential side oil seals.
2. Reinstall any part removed.
CAUTION:
If lubricant leak has occurred, after finishing work, check fluid level. Refer to CVT-13, "
Checking
CVT Fluid" .

3. Attach liquid gasket tube to the tube presser (SST).
Use Genuine Liquid Gasket or equivalent.
4. Apply the liquid gasket without breaks to the specified location
with the specified dimensions.
If there is a groove for the liquid gasket application, apply the
liquid gasket to the groove.
As for the bolt holes, normally apply the liquid gasket inside
the holes. Occasionally, it should be applied outside the
holes. Make sure to read the text of service manual.
Within 5 minutes of liquid gasket application, install the mating
component.
If the liquid gasket protrudes, wipe it off immediately.
Do not retighten mounting bolts or nut after the installation.
Wait 30 minutes or more after installation before refilling
engine oil and engine coolant.
CAUTION:
If there are specific instructions in this manual, observe
them.

19. Remove balancer unit timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
20. Loosen mounting bolts in reverse order as shown in the figure,
and remove balancer unit.
CAUTION:
Do not disassemble balancer unit.
NOTE:
Use TORX socket (size E14).
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Timing Chain
Check for cracks and any excessive wear at link plates and roller
links of timing chain. Replace timing chain as necessary.
Balancer Unit Mounting Bolt Outer Diameter
Measure the outer diameters (“d1”, “d2”) at two positions as
shown in the figure.
If reduction appears in “A” range, regard it as “d2”.
If it exceeds the limit (large difference in dimensions), replace
balancer unit mounting bolt with a new one.

CYLINDER HEAD
Compress valve spring with valve spring compressor, attach-
ment and adapter (SST). Install valve collet with magnet
hand.
CAUTION:
When working, be careful not to damage valve lifter
holes.
Tap valve stem edge lightly with plastic hammer after installa-
tion to check its installed condition.
8. Install valve lifter.
Install it in the original position.
9. Install spark plug tube if removed.
Press-fit it into cylinder head with the following procedure:
a. Remove old liquid gasket from cylinder head side installation
hole.
b. Apply sealant all round on spark plug tube within approximately
12 mm (0.47 in) width from edge of spark plug tube on the
press-fit side.
Use Thread Locking Sealant or equivalent.
c. Using drift, press-fit spark plug tube so that height is as same as
“H” shown in the figure.
CAUTION:
When press-fitting, be careful not to deform spark plug tube.
After press-fitting, wipe off any protruding thread locking sealant on top surface of cylinder
head.
10. Install spark plug with spark plug wrench (commercial service tool).
