switch connector. See Fig. 4. If continuity does not exist, repair
open Black/Red wire. If continuity exists, go to next step.
3) Check continuity between ground and Black/Red wire at
steering column horn switch connector. If continuity does not exist,
go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in
Black/Red wire.
4) Continuity between horn switch terminal and ground.
Continuity should exist with horn switch depressed. Continuity should
not exist without horn switch depressed. If continuity is not as
specified, replace horn switch. If continuity is as specified, install
horn relay and go to HORN under COMPONENT TESTS.
TURN SIGNAL & HAZARD WARNING SYSTEMS
1) If bulbs burn out rapidly, check charging system for
overcharging condition. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS
article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If charging system is okay, go
to next step. If charging system is not okay, repair as necessary.
2) If problem is turn signals failing to cancel after a turn,
inspect multifunction switch or cancelling cam lobes on clockspring
for damage or improper installation. If problem exists, repair as
necessary. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
3) Turn ignition on. Actuate turn signal switch or hazard
warning switch. Observe turn signal indicator light(s) in instrument
cluster. If flash rate is very high, check for a bulb that is not lit
or is dimly lit. Repair circuit or replace bulb as necessary. If turn
signals fail to light, go to next step.
4) Turn ignition off. Check turn signal fuse in junction
block and/or hazard warning fuse in PDC. If fuses are okay, go to next
step. If either fuse is blown, repair short circuit and replace fuse.
5) Check for battery voltage at hazard warning fuse in PDC.
Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage at turn signal fuse in
junction block. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery
voltage does not exist, repair open circuit to battery or ignition
switch as necessary.
6) Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Remove combination flasher from junction block and replace with a
known good unit. Connect battery cable and test operation of turn
signal and hazard warning systems. If operation is okay, discard
faulty flasher. If operation is not okay, go to next step.
7) Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage at combination
flasher terminals No. 51 and 48 in junction block. If battery voltage
exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair
open circuit to fuse in junction block or PDC as necessary.
8) Disconnect negative battery cable. Check continuity
between combination flasher terminal No. 50 and ground. If continuity
exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open
ground circuit.
9) Disconnect multifunction switch harness connector. Check
continuity between junction block terminal No. 4 and multifunction
switch terminal No. 13 (Pink wire). If continuity exists, go to next
step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Pink wire between
multifunction switch and junction block.
10) Check continuity between junction block terminal No. 13
and multifunction switch terminal No. 17 (Red/White wire). If
continuity exists, test multifunction switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
under COMPONENT TESTS. If continuity does not exist, repair open in
Red/White wire between junction block and multifunction switch.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service

After pulley installation, run the engine until warm. See
PUMP PULLEY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If drive belt chirps, move
pulley outward approximately .020" (0.5 mm). If noise increases, press\
pulley inward .040" (1.0 mm). Ensure pulley does not contact mounting
bolts.
THRUST BEARING PRELOAD
NOTE: Manufacturer recommends removing steering gear from vehicle
before performing any adjustments.
1) Remove steering gear from vehicle. See STEERING GEAR under
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure steering gear is empty of hydraulic
fluid. Rotate steering from stop-to-stop several times to drain fluid.
Loosen lock nut on adjuster plug. See Fig. 3. Using spanner wrench,
rotate adjuster plug clockwise until plug is seated in housing. Torque
will be approximately 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m).

2) Place reference mark on steering gear housing adjacent to
one hole in adjuster plug. Measure counterclockwise about 1/2" (13 mm)\

from reference mark and place a second reference mark on steering gear
housing.
3) Rotate adjuster plug counterclockwise until hole in
adjuster plug aligns with second mark on steering gear housing.
Tighten lock nut on adjuster plug to 80 ft. lbs. (108 N.m). Ensure
adjuster plug does not move while tightening lock nut.
OVER-CENTER PRELOAD
CAUTION: Thrust bearing preload must be adjusted before adjusting
over-center preload.
1) Loosen lock nut on sector shaft adjuster screw. See Fig. 4
. Rotate stub shaft and count turns required to go from stop-to-stop.
Turn stub shaft back 1/2 number of turns to center steering gear.

2) Rotate sector shaft adjuster screw counterclockwise until
fully extended, then turn clockwise one full turn. Attach INCH-lb.
torque wrench to end of stub shaft. Position torque wrench handle in a
vertical position. Rotate stub shaft 45 degrees from vertical position
in each direction, and record highest reading. See Fig. 4.
3) Turn adjuster in until torque required to turn stub shaft
is 6-10 INCH lbs. (0.7-1.1 N.m) more than reading in step 2). Hold
adjuster screw, and tighten lock nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 N.m).

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory
systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist
until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See
the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL
INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
POWER STEERING PUMP (GASOLINE)
WARNING: DO NOT attempt to remove power steering pump without removing
power steering pump belt. Personal injury or pulley damage
could result.
Removal
1) Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable. To remove
serpentine belt, rotate tensioner clockwise and hold in place, slide
belt from tensioner pulley. Place drain pan under pump. Disconnect and
cap hoses.
2) Remove bracket-to-engine block bolts. Remove pump, pulley
and mounting bracket as an assembly. To allow access to pump screws,
remove pump pulley. See PUMP PULLEY. Remove bracket-to-pump screws.
Installation
To install pump, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed
system. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING under LUBRICATION.
VACUUM/POWER STEERING PUMP (DIESEL)
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Place drip pan under
vacuum/power steering pump. Disconnect and cap power brake booster
hose at vacuum pump and hydraulic lines at power steering pump.
Disconnect oil pressure sending unit electrical connector. Remove
sending unit from engine block and plug hole in block. Disconnect and
cap oil feed line from bottom of vacuum pump.
2) Remove vacuum/power steering pump-to-engine block nuts and
bolts, and mounting bracket. Remove upper pump bolt and remove pump.
Drain fluid from steering pump reservoir. Remove gaskets from mounting
surfaces.
CAUTION: DO NOT damage internal vacuum pump oil seal when separating
steering pump from vacuum pump. See Fig. 5.
3) Remove steering pump-to-vacuum pump bracket bolts.
Carefully slide steering pump from bracket. Remove 2 pump body
spacers. See Fig. 5.
NOTE: Steering pump housing and spacers must mate completely with
vacuum pump bracket.
Installation
1) Install 2 pump body spacers and rotate drive gear until
steering pump and vacuum pump drive splines align. See Fig. 5.
Carefully install steering pump on vacuum pump bracket to prevent
damaging oil seal.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NOTE: For manual transmission replacement procedures, see

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
DAKOTA & DURANGO
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Disconnect and remove necessary skid plates and exhaust
components for transmission removal. Remove engine-to-transmission
struts (if equipped). These struts are located between front of
transmission and engine.
2) Ensure area around transmission oil cooler lines fitting
are clean. Disengage retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting.
Pull cooler line from transmission oil cooler.
CAUTION: Crankshaft position sensor must be removed from transmission
housing before removing transmission to prevent damage to
crankshaft position sensor.
3) Remove starter. Disconnect electrical connector for
crankshaft position sensor. On 2.5L, crankshaft position sensor is
mounted on driver's side of transmission housing. See Fig. 1. On 3.9L,
5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is mounted on passenger's
side of transmission housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts or nuts. Remove
crankshaft position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick,
dipstick tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft flanges for
installation reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. On 4WD
models, disconnect drive shaft from transfer case. Disconnect shift
rod for transfer case from transfer case shift lever.
7) On all models, disconnect necessary control cables, wiring
harnesses, and shift linkage or cable from transmission. Support rear
of engine with jack stand. Using transmission jack, slightly raise
transmission to release pressure from rear mount and rear crossmember.
8) Remove bolts securing rear support and rear mount to
transmission and rear crossmember. Raise transmission slightly. Slide
exhaust hanger arm from bracket on rear support. Remove rear support
and rear mount.
9) Remove rear crossmember located below the transmission. On
4WD models, disconnect electrical connectors from transfer case. On

Installation
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque
converter is fully seated in transmission by measuring distance from
cylinder block surface on transmission housing to front edge on torque
converter bolt lug on front of torque converter. Distance should be .
50" (12.7 mm) if torque converter is fully seated.
CAUTION: Proper length torque converter bolts must be used. If
replacing any torque converter bolts, ensure proper length
bolt is used.
2) Tighten bolt/nuts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure reference mark on torque converter and
flexplate, and drive shaft flanges are aligned. Adjust shift cable or
linkage, throttle valve cable and transfer case shift linkage if
necessary. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TRUCKS & RWD VANS article.
3) Use NEW "O" ring when installing dipstick tube. Before
installing oil cooler lines on transmission, ensure all fittings are
clean. Install oil cooler line into quick-disconnect fitting. Push oil
cooler line inward until a click is heard. Pull on oil cooler line to
ensure oil cooler line is locked in place. Fill transmission with
Mopar ATF Plus Type 7176.
RAM PICKUP
Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Disconnect and remove necessary skid plates and exhaust
components for transmission removal. Remove engine-to-transmission
struts (if equipped). These struts are located between front of
transmission and engine.
2) Ensure area around transmission oil cooler lines fitting
are clean. Disengage retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting.
Pull cooler line from transmission oil cooler. Remove starter.
CAUTION: On 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L gasoline models, crankshaft position
sensor must be removed from transmission housing before
removing transmission to prevent damage to crankshaft
position sensor.
3) On 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L gasoline models, disconnect
electrical connector for crankshaft position sensor. Crankshaft
position sensor is mounted on passenger's side of transmission
housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts. Remove crankshaft
position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick, dipstick
tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft flanges for
installation reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. On 4WD
models, disconnect drive shaft from transfer case. Disconnect shift
rod for transfer case from transfer case shift lever.
7) On all models, disconnect necessary control cables, wiring
harnesses, and shift linkage from transmission. Support rear of engine
with jack stand. Using transmission jack, slightly raise transmission
to release pressure from rear mount and rear crossmember.
8) Remove bolts securing rear support and rear mount to
transmission and rear crossmember. Raise transmission slightly. Slide
exhaust hanger arm from bracket on rear support. Remove rear support

and rear mount.
9) Remove rear crossmember located below the transmission. On
4WD models, disconnect electrical connectors from transfer case. On
all models, remove transmission-to-cylinder block bolts. Slide
transmission rearward from dowels on cylinder block.
10) Install "C" clamp on edge of transmission housing to hold
torque converter in place. Lower transmission and remove transmission
from vehicle.
Installation
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque
converter is fully seated in transmission by measuring distance from
cylinder block surface on transmission housing to front edge on torque
converter bolt lug on front of torque converter. Distance should be .
50" (12.7 mm) if torque converter is fully seated.
CAUTION: Proper length torque converter bolts must be used. If
replacing any torque converter bolts, consult parts
department to ensure proper length bolt is used.
2) Tighten bolt/nuts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure reference mark on torque converter and
flexplate, and drive shaft flanges are aligned. Adjust shift linkage,
throttle valve cable and transfer case shift linkage if necessary. See

Removal
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support
vehicle. Remove engine-to-transmission struts. These struts are
located between front of transmission and engine.
2) Remove starter and oil cooler line bracket. Ensure area
around transmission oil cooler lines fitting are clean. Disengage
retainer on quick-disconnect cooler line fitting. Pull cooler line
from transmission oil cooler.
CAUTION: Crankshaft position sensor must be removed from transmission
housing before removing transmission to prevent damage to
crankshaft position sensor.
3) Disconnect electrical connector for crankshaft position
sensor. Crankshaft position sensor is mounted on passenger's side of
transmission housing. See Fig. 2.
4) Remove crankshaft position sensor bolts. Remove crankshaft
position sensor from transmission housing. Remove dipstick, dipstick
tube and "O" ring from transmission.
5) Remove torque converter cover. Place reference mark on
flexplate and torque converter for installation reference. Rotate
crankshaft clockwise and remove torque converter bolts.
6) Place reference mark on drive shaft yokes for installation
reference. Remove drive shaft from transmission. Disconnect necessary
wiring harnesses and control cables from transmission. Support rear of
engine with hoist. Using transmission jack, slightly raise
transmission to release pressure from rear mount and crossmember.
7) Remove rear mount-to-rear crossmember bolts. Remove bolts
and rear crossmember located below the transmission. Remove engine oil

NOTE: Prior to performing wheel alignment, perform visual and
mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension

RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
CHECKING PROCEDURE
NOTE: Information on vehicles not listed was not available from
manufacturer.
1999 Caravan, Town & Country, & Voyager
Before adjusting alignment, check riding height. Measure
height from inboard edge of fenderwell directly above center of wheel,
unless specified otherwise. Riding height must be checked with vehicle
on level floor, correct size tires properly inflated and fuel tank
full. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.
Visually inspect vehicle for signs of abnormal height from
front-to-rear and side-to-side. Check passenger and luggage
compartments for extra-heavy items and remove if present. Riding
height between left side and right side of vehicle should vary less
than 0.5 (12.7 mm). Information on riding height between front and
rear is not available from manufacturer. See RIDING HEIGHT
SPECIFICATIONS (1999 CARAVAN, TOWN & COUNTRY, & VOYAGER) table. If
riding height is not within specification, check, repair or replace
suspension components.
Dakota & Durango (4WD)
1) Measure and record distance between floor surface and
center of lower suspension arm rear mounting bolt head. Measure and
record distance between floor surface and center of front wheel. See
Fig. 1 . Subtract first measurement from second measurement. On Dakota,
difference between both measurements should be 1.725-1.975" (43.82-50.
16 mm). On Durango, difference between both measurements should be 2.
78-3.02" (70.6-76.7 mm).
2) If necessary, adjust height differential to specification.
Adjust each front suspension arm by rotating torsion bar anchor
adjustment bolt clockwise to raise vehicle and counterclockwise to
lower vehicle. Always raise vehicle to correct height. If vehicle
height is greater than maximum specification, lower height to less
than specification, then back up to specification. After each
adjustment, jounce vehicle before measuring height to determine
effects of adjustment.
