assembly towards right side of vehicle and remove rear A/C-heater
assembly.
5) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure all wiring
and hoses are clear and not pinched. Tighten bolts and nuts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Removal (Ram Pickup - Front)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system.
In engine compartment, remove coolant hoses from heater core tubes.
Remove coolant overflow bottle.
2) Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant
recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect refrigerant lines from
evaporator and plug or cover all openings in A/C system. Remove
instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL. Remove Powertrain Control
Module (PCM) and position aside. DO NOT disconnect 60-pin connector
from PCM.
3) Remove attaching nuts from studs on engine compartment
side of dash panel. Remove defrost duct. Disconnect electrical
connectors. Remove attaching nuts from studs in passenger compartment
side of dash panel. Remove A/C-heater assembly from vehicle. See
Fig. 5 .
4) Place A/C-heater assembly upside-down on work bench.
Remove screw securing floor duct to bottom of A/C-heater assembly and
slide floor duct off of center heat duct adapter. Unsnap center heat
duct adapter from bottom of A/C-heater assembly housing. Remove screw
hidden behind adapter. Remove remaining screws and separate A/C-heater
assembly.
Installation
Ensure mode door pivot pins are properly inserted in holes.
To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
A/C-HEATER CONTROL PANEL R & I
Removal & Installation (Dakota & Durango)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. On models equipped with
A/T, unlock ignition switch. Set parking brake and place gear selector
lever in "L" position. If equipped, set tilt steering column in lowest
position.
2) On all models, carefully pry bezel away from instrument
panel to disengage clips. Unplug connectors from cigarette lighter and
auxiliary power outlet. Disconnect fog light switch (if equipped).
Remove A/C-heater control panel screws.
3) Pull control panel outward enough to disconnect wiring
connector, vacuum harness, and temperature control cable. Remove A/C-
heater control panel. To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust
temperature control cable. See TEMPERATURE CONTROL CABLE ADJUSTMENT .
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Reach under driver's
side of instrument panel, near transmission tunnel and unplug A/C-
heater control panel to A/C-heater assembly vacuum harness connector.
Disconnect vacuum harness from center air duct.
2) On models equipped with A/T, unlock ignition switch. Set
parking brake and place gear selector lever in "L" position. If
equipped, set tilt steering column in lowest position.
3) On all models, remove screw securing cluster bezel to
instrument panel. See Fig. 6. Carefully pry bezel away from instrument
panel to disengage clips. Unplug connectors from cigarette lighter and
auxiliary power outlet.
4) Remove 4 screws attaching A/C-heater control panel. Pull
control panel outward enough to disconnect wiring connector, vacuum
harness and temperature control cable. Remove A/C-heater control
ORIFICE TUBE REPLACEMENT
CHRYSLER CORP.
Removal & Installation (Dakota)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system,
using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect
liquid line at condenser outlet tube. Cover open refrigerant fittings
to protect from moisture and dirt.
2) Using 2 wrenches, loosen tube fitting and separate front
half of liquid line from rear half of liquid line. Using needle nose
pliers, remove fixed orifice tube from rear half of liquid line. Note
fixed orifice tube orientation for correct installation.
3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure fixed
orifice tube is positioned correctly. Evacuate, charge, and leak test
A/C system. Ensure A/C system operates properly.
NOTE: On Ram Pickup, if the fixed orifice tube is faulty or
plugged, the liquid line and orifice tube must be replaced as
an assembly.
Removal & Installation (Ram Pickup)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system,
using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect
liquid line from evaporator inlet and condenser outlet tubes. Cover
open refrigerant fittings to protect from moisture and dirt.
Disconnect liquid line retaining clips. Remove liquid line and orifice
tube. To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate, charge, and
leak test A/C system. Ensure A/C system operates properly.
FORD MOTOR CO.
NOTE: Replace orifice tube whenever compressor is replaced. Fixed
orifice tube is located in the condenser-to-evaporator liquid
line.
NOTE: DO NOT use pliers to remove fixed orifice tube or twist
orifice tube in liquid line. Doing so will cause plastic
orifice tube body to break inside condenser-to-evaporator
liquid line.
Fixed Orifice Tube Replacement (Except Continental, Mustang &
Villager)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system,
using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. On Contour
and Mystique, move power steering fluid reservoir to one side without
disconnecting hoses.
2) On all models, disconnect condenser-to-evaporator
discharge (liquid) line. Remove and discard "O" rings from line. Pour
a small amount of refrigerant oil into inlet to lubricate orifice "O"
rings.
3) Insert orifice tube remover/installer into tube and turn
tool to right to engage tangs on orifice tube. See Fig. 18. Hold "T"
handle of tool and slowly tighten nut down onto discharge line to
slowly pull orifice tube out. If orifice tube breaks off when removal
is attempted, use orifice tube extractor to pull the broken section
out. See Fig. 19.
4) Ensure replacement orifice tube is fitted with "O" ring(s)\
lubricated with clean refrigerant oil. Insert tube with short end
toward evaporator, until seated. Reconnect high pressure line. On
Contour and Mystique, tighten connection to 18 ft. lbs. (24 N.m).

ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or
ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
NOTE: All engines use hydraulic lifters. No adjustments are
required.
IGNITION TIMING
On all models, ignition timing is controlled by Powertrain
Control Module (PCM). Ignition timing is nonadjustable. DO NOT attempt\
to adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor.
NOTE: On Dakota 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L, Durango, Ram Pickup, Ram Van
and Ram Wagon, if distributor is rotated, fuel system
synchronization will be changed. If distributor is removed or
rotated, check fuel system synchronization. See procedures
under FUEL SYSTEM SYNCHRONIZATION under FUEL SYSTEM.
FUEL SYSTEM
FUEL SYSTEM SYNCHRONIZATION
NOTE: Fuel system synchronization is controlled by position of the
distributor. Rotating distributor WILL NOT change ignition
timing, but will change fuel system synchronization. Fuel
system synchronization should be checked anytime distributor
is removed or rotated.
Dakota 3.9L, 5.2L & 5.9L, Durango, Ram Pickup, Ram Van & Ram
Wagon
1) Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is
located below driver's side of instrument panel, near steering column.
See Fig. 1 , 2 or 3.
2) Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, access SET
SYNC display on scan tool. Following scan tool displays, start engine.
Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Vehicle must be in closed
loop. With engine idling, if scan tool displays IN RANGE along with
0
, this indicates correct distributor location. The degree reading
displayed on scan tool indicates the fuel synchronization, not
ignition timing.
3) If scan tool display is correct, shut engine off. Remove
scan tool. If scan tool does not display IN RANGE along with 0
, go to
next step.
4) If scan tool displays a plus (+) or minus (-) sign next\
to
the degree number, and/or the degree number displayed is not zero,
loosen but DO NOT remove distributor hold-down bolt.
5) Rotate distributor until scan tool displays IN RANGE.
Continue to rotate distributor until a reading as close as possible to
PASSENGER AIR BAG DISARM (PAD) SWITCH
PAD switch is mounted on instrument panel. Switch allows
passenger-side airbag module to be disarmed when rear facing child
safety seat is being used. PAD switch is operated with ignition key.
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
Turn ignition on and observe AIR BAG warning light. AIR BAG
warning light should illuminate for 6-8 seconds and then go out,
indicating system is functioning properly. If AIR BAG warning light
either fails to illuminate or illuminates continuously, a system
malfunction exists. Perform self-diagnostics. See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
After completing necessary repairs, turn ignition switch to
ON position. Ensure no one is inside vehicle, then connect negative
battery cable. Using DRB, erase stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).\
See DIAGNOSIS & TESTING .
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
These precautions should be observed when working with air
bag systems:
* Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag system
or steering column component. Failure to do this could
result in accidental air bag deployment and possible
personal injury. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
* Back-up power supply maintains deployment voltage for about
2 minutes after battery is disconnected. When disabling air
bag system, always wait at least 2 minutes after
disconnecting battery cables to resume procedure.
* After repairs, ensure AIR BAG warning light works
properly and no system faults are indicated. See
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
* Always wear safety glasses when servicing or handling an
air bag.
* All SRS component fasteners are specially coated and are
designed with a specific function. Never replace SRS
component fasteners with other than original equipment parts.
* Air bag module must be stored in its original special
container until used for service. It must be stored in a
clean, dry, place, away from sources of extreme heat, sparks
and high electrical energy.
* When placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface,
always face air bag and trim cover up, away from surface.
This will reduce motion of module if accidentally deployed.
* After deployment, air bag surface may contain deposits of
sodium hydroxide, which irritates skin. Always wear safety
glasses, rubber gloves, and long-sleeved shirt during
clean-up and wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow
correct disposal procedures. See DISPOSAL PROCEDURES.
* Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT
attempt to service any air bag components. Corrections are
only made by replacing defective part.
* Electrical sources should never be allowed near inflator on
back of air bag module.
* When carrying a live air bag module, trim cover should be
pointed away from your body to minimize injury in case of
deployment.
* When testing voltage or continuity at Air Bag Control Module
Requested WARM boot or User-Requested COLD boot. If DRB should display
any other error message, record entire display and contact
manufacturer.
2) If DRB does not power-up, check for loose cable
connections or a bad cable. Check vehicle battery voltage (data link
connector terminal No. 16). A minimum of 11 volts is required to
adequately power DRB.
3) If all connections are proper between DRB and vehicle or
other devices, and vehicle battery is fully charged, an inoperative
DRB may be result of faulty cable or vehicle wiring.
ENTERING ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
1) Before entering on-board diagnostics, refer to
PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . Connect DRB to data link
connector. Data link connector (DLC) is located under left side of
instrument panel, left of steering column.
NOTE: Read active DTCs with PAD switch in both ON and OFF
positions. Always turn ignition off before changing PAD
switch positions,
2) Turn ignition switch to ON position. Exit vehicle with
DRB. Using DRB, read and record active Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
data. Read and record stored DTC data. If any DTCs (fault messages)
exist, perform appropriate test.
3) If PAD switch OFF indicator fails to illuminate when in
the OFF position, go to PAD SWITCH INDICATOR PROBLEMS . If PAD switch
OFF indicator illuminates when switch is in ON position or key
cylinder does not operate, replace PAD switch.
4) Air Bag Control Module (ACM) may report any of the
following DTCs or fault messages. If the following active or stored
codes are reported by DRB, replace ACM. See
AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
