mounting bolts. Rotate compressor in brackets until filler plug is at
top. Clean area around filler plug and remove plug slowly. Rotate
front hub plate so notch in lobe is 110 degrees from the bottom. This
rotates ball end of top piston to align with oil fill port and allows
clearance for dipstick. See Fig. 1.
2) Insert compressor dipstick diagonally from right to left
until stop on dipstick contacts filler plug surface. Remove dipstick
and note oil fill level. Each increment on dipstick represents one
ounce of oil. Add oil if necessary to reach 3-4 ounce level.

SANDEN 7-CYL DRAIN & REFILL
1) Before checking and adjusting oil level, operate
compressor at engine idle speed, and set controls at maximum cooling
and high blowing speed for 20-30 minutes to return oil to compressor.
2) Stop engine. Discharge refrigerant and remove compressor
from vehicle. See SERVICING PRECAUTIONS at the beginning of this
article. Remove oil drain plug and drain oil. Measure amount of oil
drained. Install drain plug with new "O" ring.
3) If amount drained is more than 3 ounces, fill with same
amount using new oil. If amount drained is less than 3 ounces, fill
with 3 ounces. Install filler plug. Install compressor and recharge
system.

1991 GENERAL SERVICING
Compressor Service
* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
CAUTION: When discharging air conditioning system, use only approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Make every attempt
to avoid discharging refrigerant into the atmosphere.
ISOLATING COMPRESSOR
NOTE: Only compressors with stem-type service valves can be
isolated.
1) Connect service gauge set to the compressor service valves
and open compressor valves slightly (turn in clockwise). Start engine
and operate air conditioning. Slowly turn compressor suction valve
clockwise toward closed (front-seated) position.
2) When suction pressure is reduced to zero or less, turn off
engine and compressor and quickly turn suction valve stem in to full
front-seated position. Suction pressure should be slightly above zero.
Turn discharge valve into front-seated position.
3) To check oil level, slowly open compressor crankcase plug
to relieve any remaining pressure. After oil level is corrected, cap
service gauge ports on both valves. Back-seat suction service valve to
allow refrigerant to enter compressor. Open discharge valve halfway.
4) Loosen discharge service valve cap, allowing refrigerant
pressure to force air out of compressor. Back-seat service valve and
tighten cap. Compressor is now ready for operation.
REFRIGERANT OIL
Only new, pure, moisture-free refrigerant oil should be used
in the air conditioning system. This oil is highly refined and
dehydrated to a point where moisture content is less than 10 parts per
million. The oil container must be tightly closed at all times when
not in use, or moisture will be absorbed into the refrigerant oil from
the air.
DISCHARGING SYSTEM PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION: When discharging air conditioning system, use only approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Make every attempt
to avoid discharging refrigerant into the atmosphere.
If compressor has stem-type service valves, it can be
isolated and removed without discharging entire system. Otherwise,
discharge system completely using approved refrigerant
recovery/recycling equipment before loosening any fittings.
DISCONNECTING LINES & FITTINGS TEST
After system is discharged, carefully clean area around all
fittings to be opened. Always use 2 wrenches when tightening or
loosening fittings to avoid twisting or distorting lines. Cap or plug
all openings as soon as lines are removed. Do not remove caps until

DESCRIPTION
Slight variations exist among the manual A/C-heater systems
used. Either Sanden Scroll or Nippondenso 10-cylinder compressor is
used. Cycling of the compressor clutch is controlled by switches which
monitor temperatures and pressures.
Compressors will only operate within the normal operating
temperatures and pressures set for each model. An electric condenser
fan operates whenever A/C system is operating. System components used
vary depending upon model. Most systems include an A/C compressor
control unit, fan switch, evaporator, temperature sensor, high and low
(or dual) pressure switch, engine coolant temperature switch,
compressor, condenser, receiver-drier and various pipes and hoses.
Check blower switch and relay. Check A/C compressor clutch coil.
2) Ensure system is properly charged with correct amount of
refrigerant. Add refrigerant or evacuate and recharge system as
necessary. Ensure receiver-drier is not clogged. Check compressor belt
for proper tension. Check for clogged expansion valve. Check
compressor operation. Repair or replace compressor as necessary.
INSUFFICIENT AIRFLOW
Check for air leakage at air duct joint. Check for frost on
evaporator. Ensure blower motor is operating properly. Check for
obstructed air intake.
INSUFFICIENT COOLING
Ensure system is properly charged with correct amount of
refrigerant and free of air and moisture. Add refrigerant or evacuate
and recharge system as necessary. Ensure receiver-drier is not
clogged. Ensure sufficient airflow through condenser exists. Check
compressor belt for proper tension. Check compressor operation. Repair
or replace compressor as necessary. Check for clogged expansion valve.
Replace expansion valve as necessary.
INTERMITTENT COOL AIR
Check for air or moisture in system. Evacuate and recharge
system as necessary. Check for expansion valve malfunction. Replace
expansion valve if necessary. Check compressor belt for proper
tension.
TESTING
A/C SWITCH
1) Disconnect A/C switch harness connector. Using appropriate
wiring diagram as a guide, jumper appropriate terminals of A/C switch
wiring harness connector. See Fig. 4.
2) Turn blower on and momentarily turn ignition on without
starting engine. Listen for compressor clutch engagement. If
compressor clutch does not engage, check fuse and other components
wired in series with compressor clutch.

OVERVIEW
The Motorist Assurance Program is the consumer outreach
effort of the Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association, Inc.
(AMRA). Participation in the Motorist Assurance Program is drawn from
retailers, suppliers, independent repair facilities, vehicle
manufacturers and industry associations.
Our organization's mission is to strengthen the relationship
between the consumer and the auto repair industry. We produce
materials that give motorists the information and encouragement to
take greater responsibility for their vehicles-through proper,
manufacturer-recommended, maintenance. We encourage participating
service and repair shops (including franchisees and dealers) to adopt
(1) a Pledge of Assurance to their Customers and (2) the Motorist
Assurance Program Standards of Service. All participating service
providers have agreed to subscribe to this Pledge and to adhere to the
promulgated Standards of Service demonstrating to their customers that
they are serious about customer satisfaction.
These Standards of Service require that an inspection of the
vehicle's (problem) system be made and the results communicated to the\
customer according to industry standards. Given that the industry did
not have such standards, the Motorist Assurance Program successfully
promulgated industry inspection communication standards in 1994-95 for
the following systems: Exhaust, Brakes, ABS, Steering and Suspension,
Engine Maintenance and Performance, HVAC, and Electrical Systems.

ignition system, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
NOTE: All engines except 1.5L use hydraulic valve lifters. Valve
adjustment is only required on 1.5L engines. To check
hydraulic valve lifter operation, see CHECKING HYDRAULIC
VALVE LIFTERS.
MECHANICAL VALVE LIFTERS
CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft in opposite direction of normal
engine rotation.

1) Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Remove
all spark plugs and valve cover. Rotate crankshaft to position
cylinder No. 1 on TDC of compression stroke. Adjust intake valves on
cylinders No. 1 and No. 2, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1 and
No. 3. See VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT table for specification.
2) Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees to position cylinder No. 4
on TDC of compression stroke. Adjust intake valves on cylinders No. 3
and No. 4, and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2 and No. 4.

CHECKING HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS
Except 1.5L
1) Remove valve cover. Push downward on end of rocker arm
above lash adjuster. If lash adjuster is normal, it will feel hard. If
lash adjuster moves downward easily when pushed, replace adjuster.
2) If lash adjuster feels soft or spongy, oil with air has
probably entered lash adjuster. If this occurs, check engine oil
level. If engine oil level is okay, check oil screen and oil screen
gasket for damage.
3) After repairing cause of air leak, warm engine to
operating temperature. Drive vehicle at low speed for approximately 5
minutes. Turn engine off for a few minutes.
4) Restart engine and drive at low speed for approximately 5
minutes. Repeat this step several times for about one hour. This helps
remove air from engine oil.
IGNITION TIMING
NOTE: Perform all adjustments with engine at normal operating
temperature, cooling fan and accessories off, transmission
in Park or Neutral, and front wheels in straight-ahead
position. Set curb idle speed to specification. See IDLE
SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
IGNITION TIMING
1) Locate ignition timing adjustment connector. See IGNITION
TIMING ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table. Connect jumper wire
between ignition timing adjustment connector and ground. Check
ignition basic timing.
2) If ignition basic timing is not within specification,
loosen distributor (or crank angle sensor on engines with dual coil
assembly) and rotate to adjust timing if necessary. See IGNITION
TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table. Disconnect jumper wire from ignition
timing adjustment connector.

exists in wire between alternator terminal "S" and positive battery
terminal or fusible link is blown.
4) Start engine. Ensure all lights and accessories are off.
Operate engine at 2500 RPM and read voltmeter when alternator output
current drops to 10 amps or less. Voltage regulator is okay if voltage
output is within specification. See REGULATOR VOLTAGE SPECIFICATIONS
table.
BENCH TESTING
RECTIFIER ASSEMBLY
1) Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between both diodes
and stator coil lead connection. See Fig. 11. Reverse leads. If
continuity exists in both directions, diode is shorted. Replace
rectifier assembly.
2) To check entire diode assembly, use an ohmmeter to check
for continuity between both ends of each diode. See Fig. 11. Switch
ohmmeter leads. Continuity should exist in one direction, but not
other. If no continuity exists or continuity exists in both
directions, diode is defective. Replace rectifier assembly.
