INSTALLATION OF DIFFERENTIAL AND
DRIVE. PINION
1. INSTALL DRIVE PINION INTO TRANSAXLE CASE
(a) Place the bearing cage onto the drive pinion shaft.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the oil seals with
the pinion shaft. (A540E)
(b) Install the two new O±rings to the bearing cage.
(A540E)
(c) Coat the O±rings with ATF. (A540E)
(d) Using a hammer and brass bar, slightly tap the
bearing cage into the transaxle case until the
snap ring groove in the bore can be seen.
(e) Using SST, install snap ring into the bore.

Taillight Failure Sensor
INSPECTION OF SENSOR
1. INSPECT WARNING LIGHT OPERATION
(a) Disconnect the connector from the failure sensor and
ground the terminal 3 on the wire harness side.
(b) Remove the CHARGE fuse and turn the ignition
switch ON, check that the bulb lights.
If bulb does not light, inspect the bulb.
2. INSPECT SENSOR CIRCUIT
Disconnect the failure sensor connector and inspect the
connector on the wire harness side as shown in the chart.
If circuit is as specified, replace the relay.

Speedometer
INSPECTION OF SPEEDOMETER
INSPECT SPEEDOMETER OPERATION (ON±VEHICLE)
(a) Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer
for allowable indication error and check the operation
of the odometer.
HINT: Tire wear and tire over or under inflation will increase
the indication error.
Speed Sensor
INSPECTION OF SPEED SENSOR
INSPECT SPEED SENSOR
Check that there is continuity between terminals A and B
four times per each revolution of the shaft.
If operation is not as specified, replace the speedometer. If error is excessive, replace the speedometer.
(b) Check the speedometer for pointer vibration and ab-
normal noise.
HINT: Pointer vibration can be caused by a loose
speedometer cable.

Diagnosis System
OUTPUT OF DIAGNOSTIC CODES
1. READ TYPE A CODE
(a) Turn the ignition switch on.
(b) Turn the set/coast switch on, and keep it on.
(e) Push the main switch on.
(d) Turn the set/coast switch oft.
(e) Meet the conditions listed below.
(f) Read the diagnostic code on the main switch indica-
tor.
HINT:
wTo save time performing the next test, do not turn off the
ignition switch when steps (a) ± (f) are completed.
wChecking of No. 4 code is done with the vehicle jacked
up and the engine idling.
wIf there is no indication code, perform diagnosis ±and
inspection. (See page Be±74)
