Vehicles with a smart entry &  
start system
Press and hold the power switch for 2  
consecutive seconds or more, or press 
it briefly 3 times or more in succession.
5 Stop the vehicle in a safe place  
by the road. 
 If the door can be opened, open  
the door and exit the vehicle. 
 If the door can not be opened,  
open the window using the  
power window switch and ensure  
an escape route. 
 If the window can be opened,  
exit the vehicle through the win- 
dow. 
 If the door and window cannot be  
opened due to the rising water,  
remain calm, wait until the water  
level inside the vehicle rises to  
the point that the water pressure  
inside of the vehicle equals the  
water pressure outside of the  
vehicle and then open the door  
after waiting for the rising water  
to enter the vehicle, and exit the  
vehicle. When the outside water  
level exceeds half the height of  
the door, the door cannot be 
WARNING
■If the hybrid system has to be  turned off while driving
●Power assist for the steering wheel  
will be lost, making the steering  wheel heavier to turn. Decelerate as much as possible before turning  
off the hybrid system.
●Vehicles without a smart entry & 
start system: Never attempt to  remove the key, as doing so will lock the steering wheel.
If  the vehicle is sub- 
merged or water on the  
road is rising
This vehicle is not designed to  
be able to drive on roads that  
are deeply flooded with water.
Do not drive on roads where  
the roads may be submerged  
or the water may be rising. It is  
dangerous to remain in the  
vehicle, if it anticipated that the  
vehicle will be flooded or set a  
drift. Remain calm and follow  
the following.

system. Also, if you replace the compact  
spare tire after the tire pressure warning  light comes on, the light remains on.
■If you have a flat rear tire (vehicles  
with a compact spare tire in some  
countries*) 
Do not install the compact spare tire to  rear axles.  
Install the compact spare tire on one of  the front wheels of the vehicle. 
1 Replace a front tire with the compact  spare tire. 
2 Replace the flat rear tire with the tire  
removed from the front of the vehi- cle.*: Guadelope, Martinique, F. Guiana,  
Ceuta & Melilla, Ukraine, Turkey, New 
Caledonia, Tahiti, Morocco
■If you have a flat front tire on a road  covered with snow or ice (vehicles  
with a compact spare tire) 
Install the compact spare tire on one of  the rear wheels of the vehicle. Perform  
the following steps and fit tire chains to  the front tires: 
1 Replace a rear tire with the compact  spare tire. 
2 Replace the flat front tire with the tire  
removed from the rear of the vehicle. 
3 Fit tire chains to the front tires.
■When reinstalling the wheel orna- ment (steel wheels except compact spare tire) 
Align the cutout of the wheel ornament  with the valve stem as shown in the illustration.
WARNING
■When using the full-size spare tire (if equipped)
●Replace the full-size spare tire with a standard tire as soon as possible.
●Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shift-ing operations that cause sudden  
engine braking.
■When using the compact spare 
tire (if equipped)
●Remember that the compact spare  tire provided is specifically  
designed for use with your vehicle.  Do not use your compact spare tire on another vehicle.
●Do not use more than one compact spare tires simultaneously.
●Replace the compact spare tire with a standard tire as soon as possible.
●Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shift- 
ing operations that cause sudden  engine braking.
■When the compact spare tire (if equipped) is attached 
The vehicle speed may not be cor- 
rectly detected, and the following sys- tems may not operate correctly: 
• ABS & Brake assist 
• VSC 
•TRC
• Automatic High Beam (if equipped) 
• Dynamic radar cruise control with  
full-speed range (if equipped) 
• EPS 
• PCS (Pre-Collision System) (if  equipped) 
• LTA (Lane Tracing Assist) (if  equipped)

One of the following may be the  
cause of the problem: 
 Vehicles with a smart entry &  
start system: The electronic key  
may not be functioning properly.  
( P.470) 
 There may not be sufficient fuel  
in the vehicle’s tank. Refuel the  
vehicle. 
 There may be a malfunction in  
the immobilizer system. ( P.84) 
 Vehicles with a smart entry &  
start system: There may be a  
malfunction in the steering lock  
system. 
 Vehicles with a smart entry &  
start system: The hybrid system  
may be malfunctioning due to an  
electrical problem such as elec- 
tronic key battery depletion or a  
blown fuse. However, depend- 
ing on the type of malfunction, an  
interim measure is available to  
start the hybrid system.  
( P.469) 
 The temperature of the hybrid  
battery (traction battery) may be  
extremely low (below approxi- 
mately -30°C [-22°F]). ( P.189,  
191) 
One of the following may be the  
cause of the problem: 
 The 12-volt battery may be dis- 
charged. ( P.472) 
 The 12-volt battery terminal con- 
nections may be loose or cor- 
roded. ( P.388) 
One of the following may be the  
cause of the problem: 
 The 12-volt battery may be dis- 
charged. ( P.472) 
 One or both of the 12-volt battery  
terminals may be disconnected.  
( P.388)
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer  
or Toyota authorized repairer, or any 
reliable repairer if the problem cannot 
be repaired, or if repair procedures are 
unknown.
If  the hybrid system will  
not start
Reasons for the hybrid system  
not starting vary depending on  
the situation. Check the follow- 
ing and perform the appropri- 
ate procedure:
The hybrid system will not  
start even though the cor-
rect starting procedure is 
being followed. ( P.189,  
191)
The interior lights and head-
lights are dim, or the horn  
does not sound or sounds at  
a low volume.
The interior lights and head-
lights do not turn on, or the 
horn does not sound.

When the hybrid system does not  
start, the following steps can be  
used as an interim measure to start  
the hybrid system if the power  
switch is functioning normally. 
Do not use this starting procedure  
except in case of emergency. 
1 Pull the parking brake switch to  
check that the parking brake is  
set. ( P.200)
Parking brake indicator will come on.
2Shift the shift lever to P. 
3 Turn the power switch to ACC. 
4 Press and hold the power switch  
for about 15 seconds while  
depressing the brake pedal  
firmly.
Even if the hybrid system can be  
started using the above steps, the sys-
tem may be malfunctioning. Have the 
vehicle inspected by any authorized 
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized 
repairer, or any reliable repairer.
Emergency start function  
(vehicles with a smart entry  
& start system)
If  you lose your keys
New genuine keys can be  
made by any authorized Toyota  
retailer or Toyota authorized  
repairer, or any reliable  
repairer using the other key  
(vehicles without a smart entry  
& start system) or mechanical  
key (vehicles with a smart  
entry & start system) and the  
key number stamped on your  
key number plate. 
Keep the plate in a safe place  
such as your wallet, not in the  
vehicle.
NOTICE
■When an electronic key is lost  (vehicles with a smart entry &  
start system) 
If the electronic key remains lost, the  risk of vehicle theft increases signifi- 
cantly. Visit any authorized Toyota  retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer immediately  
with all remaining electronic keys that  were provided with your vehicle.

■When the electronic key does not  work properly
●Make sure that the smart entry & start system has not been deactivated in  
the customization setting. If it is off,  turn the function on. (Customizable features:  P.494)
●Check if battery-saving mode is set. If  it is set, cancel the function. ( P.153)
Use the mechanical key (P.133)  
in order to perform the following  
operations: 
1 Locks all the doors 
2 Unlocks all the doors
■Key linked functions 
1 Closes the windows (turn and hold)*
2Opens the windows (turn and hold)* 
*: These settings must be customized at  
any authorized Toyota retailer or 
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli-
able repairer.
If  the electronic key  
does not operate prop- 
erly (vehicles with a 
smart entr y & start sys- 
tem)
If communication between the  
electronic key and vehicle is  
interrupted ( P.154) or the  
electronic key cannot be used  
because the battery is  
depleted, the smart entry &  
start system and wireless  
remote control cannot be used.  
In such cases, the doors can  
be opened and the hybrid sys- 
tem can be started by following  
the procedure below.

■In case of a smart entry & start  system malfunction or other key-related problems 
Take your vehicle with all the elec- tronic keys provided with your vehicle to any authorized Toyota retailer or  
Toyota authorized repairer, or any reli- able repairer.

1Ensure that the shift lever is in P  
and depress the brake pedal. 
2 Touch the area behind the lock  
button and unlock button on the  
electronic key to the power  
switch.
When the electronic key is detected, a  
buzzer sounds and the power switch  will turn to ON. 
When the smart entry & start system is  
deactivated in customization setting,  the power switch will turn to ACC.
3 Firmly depress the brake pedal  
and check that   is shown on  
the multi-information display. 
4 Press the power switch shortly  
and firmly. 
In the event that the hybrid system  
still cannot be started, contact any  
authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota  
authorized repairer, or any reliable  
repairer.
■Stopping the hybrid system 
Shift the shift lever to P and press the  power switch as you normally do when  
stopping the hybrid system.
■Electronic key battery 
As the above procedure is a temporary  measure, it is recommended that the  
electronic key battery be replaced  immediately when the battery is depleted. ( P.409)
■Alarm (if equipped) 
Using the mechanical key to lock the  doors will not set the alarm system.If a door is unlocked using the mechani- 
cal key when the alarm system is set,  the alarm may be triggered. ( P. 8 6 )
■Changing power switch modes 
Release the brake pedal and press the  
power switch in step  3 above. The hybrid system does not start and modes will be changed each time the  
switch is pressed. ( P.193)
WARNING
■When using the mechanical key  and operating the power win- 
dows 
Operate the power window after  checking to make sure that there is no  
possibility of any passenger having  any of their body parts caught in the window. 
Also, do not allow children to operate  the mechanical key. It is possible for children and other passengers to get  
caught in the power window.

If you have a set of jumper (or  
booster) cables and a second vehi- 
cle with a 12-volt battery, you can  
jump start your vehicle by following  
the steps below. 
1 Vehicles with an alarm (P. 8 6 ) :   
Confirm that the electronic key  
is being carried.
When connecting the jumper (or  booster) cables, depending on the situ- 
ation, the alarm may activate and doors  
locked. ( P. 8 7 )
2Open the hood (P.380) and  
fuse box cover. 
3 Open the exclusive jump start- 
ing terminal cover. 
4 Connect a positive jumper cable clamp to   on your vehicle and con- 
nect the clamp on the other end of the positive cable to   on th e sec- 
ond vehicle. Then, connect a negative cable clamp to   on the se cond

tem if the 12-volt  battery is dis- 
charged. 
You can also call any autho-
