Electric parking brake

q Function of the electric parking brake (applying
automatically)
&WARNING Risk of accident and injury due
to children les unattended in the vehicle
If you leave children unattended in the vehicle,
they could, in particular:
= open doors, thereby endangering other
persons or road users.
= get out and be struck by oncoming traPc.
= operate vehicle equipment and become
trapped, for example.
In addition, the children could also set the
vehicle in motion by, for example:
= releasing the parking brake.
= changing the gearbox position.
= starting the vehicle.Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle.Keep the key out of reach of children.
The electric parking brake is applied if the trans-mission is in position ] and one of the following
conditions is fulNlled:
= The vehicle is switched oM.
= The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the seat
belt buckle of the driver\bs seat and the driver\bs
door is opened.
\bTo prevent application: pull the handle of the
electric parking brake (  page 184).In the following situations, the electric parking
brake is also applied: = The HOLD function is keeping the vehicle sta-
tionary.
= Active Parking Assist is keeping the vehicle
stationary.
= Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is bringing
the vehicle to a standstill.
= In addition, one of the following conditions
must be fulNlled:
- The vehicle is switched oM.
- The seat belt tongue is not inserted in the
seat belt buckle of the driver\bs seat and
the driver\bs door is opened.
- There is a system malfunction.
- The power supply is insuPcient.
- The vehicle is stationary for a lengthy
period.
When the electric parking brake is applied, the red M (USA) or

\bThe electric parking brake is not automatically
applied if the vehicle is switched oM by the
ECO start/stop function.

q Function of the electric parking brake (releas-
ing automatically)
The electric parking brake is released when the
following conditions are fulNlled:
= The driver\bs door is closed.
= The vehicle has been started.
= The transmission is in position [ or ^ and
you depress the accelerator pedal or you shis
from transmission position ] to [ or ^
when on level ground.
= If the transmission is in position ^, the tail-
gate must be closed.
= The seat belt tongue is inserted into the seat
belt buckle of the driver\bs seat.
If the seat belt tongue is not inserted into the
seat belt buckle of the driver\bs seat, one of the following conditions must be fulNlled:
- You shis from transmission position ].
or
- You have previously driven at speeds
greater than 2 mph (3 km/h).

Information on collision detection on a parked
vehicle
If a collision is detected on the locked vehicle when towing protection is switched on and colli-sion detection is switched on, you will receive a
message in the multimedia system when the vehi-
cle is switched on.
You will receive information about the following points:
= The area of the vehicle that may have been
damaged.
= The force of the impact.
The following situation may lead to inadvertent activation:
= The parked vehicle is moved in a two-story
garage, for example.
\bDeactivate tow-away protection to prevent
inadvertent activation. If you deactivate tow-
away protection, collision detection will also be deactivated.\bIf the battery is heavily discharged, the func-tion for detecting a collision on a parked vehi-cle will automatically be deactivated to facili-tate the next engine start.
System limits
Detection may be restricted in the following situa-
tions:
= the vehicle is damaged without impact, such
as if an outside mirror is torn oM or the paint is
damaged by a key
= impact occurs at low speed
= the electric parking brake is not applied
\bYou are responsible for your vehicle. Make
sure that your vehicle is free of damage and
roadworthy.
Notes on parking the vehicle for an extended
period
If you leave the vehicle parked for longer than six
weeks, it may suMer damage through disuse.
The 12 V battery may also be impaired or dam-
aged by heavy discharging.
\bFurther information can be obtained at a
qualiNed specialist workshop.Standby mode (extension of the starter battery\bs
period out of use)

q Standby mode function
\bThis function is not available for all models.
If standby mode is activated, energy loss will be
minimized during extended periods of non-opera-
tion.
Standby mode is characterized by the following:
= The starter battery is preserved.
= The maximum non-operational time appears in
the media display.
= The connection to online services is interrup-
ted.
= The ATA (anti-thes alarm system) is not availa-
ble.
= The interior protection and tow-away alarm
functions are not available.
= The function for detecting collisions on a
parked vehicle is not available.

If the following conditions are fulNlled, standby
mode can be activated or deactivated using the multimedia system:
= The vehicle is switched on.
= The vehicle has not been started.
Exceeding the vehicle\bs displayed non-operational
time may cause inconvenience; i.e. it cannot be guaranteed that the starter battery will reliablystart the vehicle.
Charge the starter battery in the following situa- tions:
= The vehicle\bs non-operational time must be
extended.
= The Battery Charge Insufficient for Standby
Mode message appears in the media display.\bStandby mode is automatically deactivated
when the vehicle is switched on.

Driving and driving safety systems
Driving systems and your responsibility
Your vehicle is equipped with driving systems that
assist you in driving, parking and maneuvering thevehicle. The driving systems are only aids. Theyare not a substitute for you paying attention to
your surroundings and do not relieve you of your
responsibility pertaining to road traPc law. The
driver is always responsible for maintaining a safe
distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, for braking in good time and for staying in lane.Pay attention to the traPc conditions at all times
and intervene when necessary. Be aware of the limitations regarding the safe use of these sys-tems.
Driving systems can neither reduce the risk of an
accident if you fail to adapt your driving style nor
override the laws of physics. They cannot always
take into account road, weather or traPc condi-
tions.\bSome driving systems can regulate or limit the speed to a previously set value. Draw atten-tion to the stored speed when changing driv-
ers.
Information on vehicle sensors and cameras
Some driving and driving safety systems use cam- eras as well as radar or ultrasonic sensors to
monitor the area in front of, behind or next to the vehicle.

If the area around vehicle sensors or cameras
is covered, damaged or dirty, certain driving
and safety systems cannot function correctly.
There is a risk of an accident.
Keep the area around vehicle sensors or
cameras clear of any obstructions and
clean.Have damage to the bumper, radiator
grille or stone chipping in the area of the
front and rear windows repaired at a
qualiNed specialist workshop.
Particularly, keep the areas around the sensors
and cameras free of dirt, ice or slush
(  page 308). The sensors and cameras must
not be covered and the detection ranges around them must be kept free. Do not attach additional
license plate brackets, advertisements, stickers, foils or foils to protect against stone chippings in
the detection range of the sensors and cameras.
Make sure that there are no overhanging loads
protruding into the detection range.
If there is damage to a bumper or the radiatorgrill, or aser an impact, have the function of the
sensors checked at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop. Have damage or stone chipping in the area of the cameras on the front and rear windows
repaired at a qualiNed specialist workshop.\bThe rear view camera can extend and retract
automatically for the purpose of calibration,
even though there is no camera image in the
display.

The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) regulates the
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
= During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insuPcient tire trac-
tion, the wheels are prevented from locking.
= Vehicle steerability while braking is ensured.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con- ditions and can serve as a reminder to take extra
care while driving.
System limits
= ABS is active from speeds of approx. 3 mph
(5 km/h).
= ABS may be impaired or may not function if a
malfunction has occurred and the yellow %
ABS warning lamp lights up continuously aser
the vehicle is started.

Functions of OM-road ABS\bOM-road ABS is activated automatically when
you select the F or G drive program.
OM-road ABS is specially adapted for driving oM-
road:
= The front wheels lock cyclically during braking.
= The braking distance is shortened due to the
digging-in eMect.
System limits
= OM-road ABS functions at speeds below
25 mph (40 km/h).
= If OM-road ABS intervenes, the ability to steer
may be restricted.
Function of BAS
&WARNING Risk of an accident caused by a
malfunction in BAS (Brake Assist System)
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emergency braking situation is
increased.
Depress the brake pedal with full force in
emergency braking situations. ABS pre-
vents the wheels from locking.
The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports your emergency braking situation with additional brakeforce.
If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS is
activated:
= BAS automatically boosts the brake pressure.
= BAS can shorten the braking distance.
= ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual once you release the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated.
Function of ESP n

vehicle stabilization.

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP n
) can moni-
tor and improve driving stability and traction in
the following situations within physical limits:
= When pulling away on wet or slippery roads.
= When braking.
If the vehicle deviates from the direction desired
by the driver, ESP n
can stabilize the vehicle by
intervening in the following ways:
= One or more wheels are braked.
= The engine output is adapted according to the
situation.
