Maintenance and care
■When replacing wheels
The wheels of your vehicle are equipped with tire pressure warn ing valves
and transmitters (except for compact spare tire) that allow the tire pressure
warning system to provide advance warning in the event of a los s in tire infla-
tion pressure. Whenever wheels are replaced, tire pressure warning valves
and transmitters must be installed. ( P. 618)
WARNING
■When replacing wheels
● Do not use wheels that are a different size from those recommended in the
Owner’s Manual, as this may resu lt in a loss of handling control.
● Never use an inner tube in a leaking wheel which is designed for a tube-
less tire. Doing so may result in an accident, causing death or serious
injury.
■ When installing the wheel nuts
● Be sure to install the wheel nuts with the tapered ends facing inward.
( P. 738) Installing the nuts with the tapered ends facing outward can
cause the wheel to break and eventually cause the wheel to come off
while driving, which could lead to an accident resulting in dea th or serious
injury.
● Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.
Oil and grease may cause the wheel nuts to be excessively tight ened,
leading to bolt or disc wheel damage. In addition, the oil or grease can
cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel may fall off, caus ing an acci-
dent and resulting in death or serious injury. Remove any oil o r grease
from the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.
■ Use of defective wheels prohibited
Do not use cracked or deformed wheels.
Doing so could cause the tire to leak air during driving, possi bly causing an
accident.

WARNING
■If both the ABS and the brake system warning lights remain on
Stop your vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact any a uthorized
Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer. The
vehicle will become extremely unstable during braking, and the ABS system
may fail, which could cause an accident resulting in death or s erious injury.
■ When the electric power steering system warning light comes on
When the light comes on yellow, the assist to the power steerin g is
restricted. When the light comes on red, the assist to the powe r steering is
lost and handling operations of the steering wheel become extre mely
heavy. When steering wheel operations are heavier than usual, g rip the
steering wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usua l.
■ If the tire pressure warning light comes on
Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause a
loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious injury.
● Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the tire infla-
tion pressure immediately.
● Vehicles with spare tire: If the tire pressure warning light comes on even
after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that y ou have a flat
tire. Check the tires. If a tire is flat, change it with the sp are tire and have
the flat tire repaired by the nearest any authorized Toyota ret ailer or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
● Vehicles with emergency tire puncture repair kit: If the tire pressure warn-
ing light comes on even after ti re inflation pressure adjustment, it is proba-
ble that you have a flat tire. Check the tires. If a tire is fl at, repair the flat tire
by using emergency tire puncture repair kit. ( P. 699)
● Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deteriorate, you
could lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.
■ If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur
The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.

When trouble arises
If you have a flat tire (vehicles with an
emergency tire puncture repair kit)
Vehicles equipped with an emergency tire puncture repair kit do
not have a spare tire equipped.
A puncture caused by a nail or screw passing through the tire
tread can be repaired temporarily with the emergency tire punc-
ture repair kit.
WARNING
■ If you have a flat tire
Do not continue driving with a flat tire.
Driving even a short distance with a flat tire can damage the t ire and the
wheel beyond repair, which could result in an accident.
Driving with a flat tire may cause a circumferential groove on the side wall.
In such a case, the tire may e xplode when using a repair kit.

When trouble arises
If you have a flat tire (vehicles with a spare tire)
●Stop the vehicle in a safe place on a hard, flat surface.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift lever to P.
● Stop the hybrid system.
● Turn on the emergency flashers. (P. 670)
Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can be
replaced with the spare tire.

Remove any dirt or foreign mat-
ter from the wheel contact sur-
face.
If foreign matter is on the wheel
contact surface, the wheel nuts
may loosen while the vehicle is in
motion, causing the tire to come
off.
Install the spare tire and loosely tighten each wheel nut by ha nd by
approximately the same amount.
When replacing an aluminum
wheel with a compact spare
tire, tighten the wheel nuts until
the tapered portion comes into
loose contact with the disc
wheel seat.
When replacing an aluminum
wheel with an aluminum wheel,
turn the wheel nuts until the
washers come into contact with
the disc wheel.
