age to the sunroof.  Release the switch when the sunroof has reached a completely open or completelyclosed position.  If the sunroof does not operate when the sun- roof switch is operated, release the switch and check whether something is trapped by the sunroof. If nothing is trapped, have thesunroof checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.  Be careful when tilting up the sunroof if a ski carrier or a roof carrie
r is installed. Depend-
ing on the model of ski carrier or roof carrier,the sunroof may contact
the carrier when the
sunroof is tilted up.  Be sure to close the sunroof completely when washing the vehicle or when leaving the vehicle.  Do not put any wax on the weatherstrip (black rubber) around the sunroof opening. Ifit is waxed, the weat
herstrip cannot maintain
a weatherproof seal with the sunroof.  After washing the vehicle or after rain be sure to wipe off any water that is on the sun- roof before operating it.
 Operating the sunroof repeatedly with the engine turned off will run down the battery.Operate the sunroof only while the engine isrunning.

The Electric parking brake is the system thatapplies the parking brake by the electricmotor.

When the parking brake is applied, the brake warning light in the instrument cluster andthe indicator light (A) on the Electric parking brake switch will come on. When parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels toward the curb on adownhill, or away from

CAUTIONWhile the vehicle is in
motion, do not apply

cause overheating and/or
premature wear of
brake parts, reducing brake performance. NOTE
 In the following condi
tions, the brake warn-
ing light will illuminate for approximately15 seconds and then go off. • While the Electric pa
rking brake is applied,
the ignition switch is turned to the “OFF” position or the opera
tion mode is put in
OFF. • While the ignition switch is in the “OFF” position or the operation mode is in OFF,the Electric pa
rking brake switch is pulled
up.
 If the Electric parking
brake must be applied
in an emergency situation, pull and hold theElectric parking brake
switch to apply the
Electric parking brake. At that time, the fol- lowing warning display will appear in the multi-information disp
lay and a buzzer will
sound, however you shoul
d continue to pull
and hold the Electric
parking brake switch.
 When parking on steep grades, pull up the Electric parking brak
e switch twice (once
more after the operati
on is completed once).
The maximum effect of the parking brakewill be obtained.  If the parking brake does not hold the vehicle stationary after the foot brake is released, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.  When the ignition switch or the operation mode is other than ON, if the Electric park-ing brake is applied, the Electric parking brake indicator light comes on for a while.NOTE
 If the Electric parking brake switch is repeat- edly operated in a short time, the followingwarning display will
appear in the multi-
information display and
the Electric parking
brake will temporarily
stop working. In such
case, wait for approxi
mately 1 minute until
the warning display di
sappears, and operate
the Electric parki
ng brake switch again.
 The brake warning light
and the indicator
light on the Electric
parking brake switch
may blink. This does not
indicate a malfunc-
tion, the lights go off when/if the Electricparking brake is released.  Depending on the situat
ion, the Electric
parking brake may be
applied automatically.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed slowly while all of the following conditions are met, the Electric parking brake is auto- matically released.  The engine is running.  The selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) or the “R” (REVERSE) position.  The driver’s seat belt is fastened.
When the parking brake is released, the brake warning light and the indicator lamp on theElectric parking brake switch go off. Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is released and brake warning light is off.

The outside mirror can be retracted towards the side window to prevent damage when parking in tight locations. Push the mirror towards the back of the vehi- cle with your hand to retract it in. When extending the mirror, pull it out towards thefront of the vehicle until it clicks to lock in place.
With the ignition switch in the “ON” or “ACC” position or the operation mode in ON or ACC, push the mirror retractor switch to retract the mirrors. Push it again to extend the mirrors to their original positions. After placing the ignition switch in the“LOCK” position or the operation mode in OFF, it is possible to retract and extend the mirrors using the mirror retractor switch forapproximately 30 seconds.

CAUTION It is possible to retract and extend the mirrors by hand. After retracti
ng a mirror using the
mirror retractor switch, however, you shouldextend it by using the switch again, not by hand. If you extended the mirror by hand after retracting it usi
ng the switch, it would
not properly lock in position. As a result, the mirror could move be
cause of the wind or
vibration while you are driving, and this mayprevent the driver’s rearward visibility.NOTE
 Be careful not to get your hands trapped while a mirror is moving.  If you move a mirror by hand or it moves after hitting a person or object, you may not be able to return it to its original positionusing the mirror retractor switch. If this hap- pens, push the mirror retractor switch to place the mirror in its retracted position andthen push the switch again to return the mir- ror to its original position.  When freezing has occu
rred and mirrors fail
to operate as intended, please refrain from repeated pushing of the retractor switch asthis action can result
in burn-out of the mir-
ror motor circuits.

The individual gears are selected automati- cally, depending on the position of the gearselector lever, the speed of the vehicle and the position of the accelerator pedal.

When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to anotherposition while the brake
pedal is pressed and
held down with the operation mode in ON, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mech-anism may be malfunctioning. Immediately have your

If you need to move the vehicle, shift theselector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is firmly applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running.
Set the selector lever in the gate to operate while the brake pedal is depressed.

After operating, check
the position in the
multi-information display.  If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent theselector lever from being moved from the “P” (PARK) position.  For a shift indicated by in the illustra- tion, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If you attempt to move theselector lever before
depressing the brake
pedal, the selector
lever may become
immovable.

The CVT will automati
cally and continuously
change its gear ratio depending on road anddriving conditions. This helps achieve smooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. If your vehicle is equipped with the spor-tronic steering wheel paddle shifter, you can manually shift up and shift down the trans- mission. Refer to “Sports mode” on page5-81. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving.
NOTE
 In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.
