Vehicles With a Modem
The modem has a SIM. The modemperiodically sends messages to stayconnected to the cell phone network.These messages could include informationthat identifies your vehicle, the SIM and theelectronic serial number of the modem.Cell phone network service providers couldhave access to additional information, forexample cell phone network toweridentification.
Note:The modem continues to send thisinformation unless you have all added valueservices deactivated. Contact the FordCustomer Relationship Center. Refer to theregional Ford website for contactinformation.
Note:The service can be unavailable orinterrupted for a number of reasons, forexample environmental or topographicalconditions and data plan coverage.
Vehicles With SYNC
Mobile Device Data
If you connect a mobile device to yourvehicle, you can display data from yourdevice on the touchscreen for example,music and album art. You can share yourvehicle data with mobile apps on yourdevice through the system. See Apps(page 353).
The mobile apps function operates by yourconnected device sending data to us in theUnited States. The data is encrypted andincludes the vehicle identification numberof your vehicle, the SYNC module serialnumber, odometer, enabled apps, usagestatistics and debugging information. Weretain it only as long as necessary toprovide the service, to troubleshoot, forcontinuous improvement and to offer youproducts and services that may be ofinterest to you according to yourpreferences and where allowed by law.
If you connect a cell phone to the system,the system creates a profile that links tothat cell phone. The cell phone profileenables more mobile features and efficientoperation. The profile contains, forexample data from your phonebook, readand unread text messages and call history,including history of calls when your cellphone was not connected to the system.

Getting to Know Your System
The SYNC 3 system allows you to interactwith a variety of features using thetouchscreen and voice commands. Byintegrating with your Bluetooth-enabledphone, the touchscreen provides easyinteraction with audio, multimedia, climatecontrol, navigation, and your phone's SYNCAppLink.
Using the Touchscreen
To operate the touchscreen, you cansimply touch the item or option that youwant to select. The button highlights whenyou select it.
The SYNC 3 layout allows you to quicklyselect the feature you wish to use.

The Status Bar
Additional icons also display in the statusbar depending on market, vehicle optionsand current operation. If a feature is notactive, the icon does not display. Certainicons may move to the left or rightdepending on what options are active.

•Do not attempt to service or repair thesystem. Have an authorized dealercheck your vehicle.
•Do not operate playing devices if thepower cords or cables are broken, splitor damaged. Place cords and cablesout of the way, so they do not interferewith the operation of pedals, seats,compartments or safe driving abilities.
•Do not leave playing devices in yourvehicle during extreme conditions as itcould cause them damage. See yourdevice's user guide for furtherinformation.
•For your safety, some SYNC 3 functionsare speed-dependent. Their use islimited to when your vehicle is travelingat speeds under 3 mph (5 km/h). Makesure that you review your device'smanual before using it with SYNC 3.
Speed-restricted Features
Some features of this system may be toodifficult to use while your vehicle is movingso they are restricted from use unless yourvehicle is stationary.
•Screens crowded with information,such as Point of Interest reviews andratings, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Linksports scores, movie times or skiconditions.
•Any action that requires you to use akeyboard is restricted, such as enteringa navigation destination or editinginformation.
•All lists are limited so the user can viewfewer entries (such as phone contactsor recent phone call entries).

Updating Your System
You can choose to download the updateonto a USB drive or use Wi-Fi to deliverautomatic updates.
USB Updates
To use the USB update you need to loginto your owner account and visit the SYNCsoftware update page.
