Charging the hybrid battery
In addition to the conventional fuel tank, yourvehicle is also equipped with a rechargeablelithium-ion hybrid battery.

The hybrid battery can be recharged using thecharging cable stored in a storage space in thetrunk.
WARNING
The hybrid electrical system in your vehicleuses high voltage electrical current. Any dam-age to this system or to the hybrid batterymay result in the danger of overheating, fire,or serious injury. If the vehicle is involved in acollision or subjected to flooding, fire, etc.,have it inspected by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician. Prior to this inspec-tion, the vehicle should be parked outdoors ata safe distance from any building or poten-tially flammable materials.
The hybrid battery's charging time depends onthe charging current used.

NOTE
The capacity of the hybrid battery diminishessomewhat with age and use, which couldresult in increased use of the gasoline engineand consequently, slightly higher fuel con-sumption.

WARNING
If the hybrid battery needs to be replaced, thismay only be done by a Volvo retailer orauthorized Volvo workshop.

Stopping hybrid battery charging
To stop charging of the hybrid battery, unlockthe vehicle, unplug the charging cable from thevehicle's charging socket and then unplug thecable from the 120/240 V outlet (alternatingcurrent).

CAUTION
Before the charging cable is removed fromthe vehicle's charging socket, the vehiclemust be unlocked using the unlock button onthe remote key. This must be done even if thevehicle's doors are already unlocked. If thevehicle is not unlocked using the unlock but-ton, the charging cable or system may bedamaged.

NOTE
Always unlock the vehicle so that charging iscut off before the connection to the120/240 V outlet (AC, alternating current) isdisconnected. Note that the charging cablemust be disconnected from the vehicle'scharging socket before it is disconnectedfrom the 120/240 V outlet, partly to preventdamage to the system and party to preventunintentional interruption of charging.
Unlock the vehicle with the remote key.Charging will stop.
Press the lock button on the chargingcable's handle. The handle will be released/unlocked. Unplug the cable from the vehi-cle's charging socket and close the chargerdoor.
Unplug the cable from the 120/240 V outlet.
Stow the charging cable in the storage com-partment on the right side of the trunk.
Charging cable automatically locks
If the charging cable cannot be removed from thecharging socket, it will automatically lock intoplace again after unlocking to maximize chargingand range and to enable preconditioning beforedriving. The charging cable can be removed againif the vehicle is unlocked using the remote key.For vehicles with Passive Entry*, the handle canbe used to lock and unlock.

Settings for automatically activatingthe parking brake
Choose whether the parking brake should beactivated automatically when the vehicle isswitched off.
To change this setting:
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap My CarParking Brake andSuspension and select or deselect theAuto Activate Parking Brake function.

Parking on a hill
Always use the parking brake when parking on ahill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when parkingon an incline. Selecting a gear or putting theautomatic transmission in P may not be suffi-cient to keep the vehicle stationary in all sit-uations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingaway from the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward the curb.

Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause thevehicle to roll backward when the parking brakeis released automatically on steep uphill gradi-ents. To help avoid this, pull the control upwardwhile you are driving away. Release the controlwhen the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate theparking brake after several attempts, contact anauthorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the parkingbrake is activated while the vehicle is beingdriven.
If the vehicle must be parked before the problemis rectified, turn the wheels as when parking onan incline and put the gear selector in P.
Low battery charge level
If the battery charge level is too low, it will not bepossible to activate or deactivate the parkingbrake. Connect an auxiliary battery to the vehicleif the battery is discharged.

Replacing brake pads
Due to the design of the electric parking brake,the rear brake pads must be replaced by a work-shop. An authorized Volvo workshop is recom-mended.

Brake - B
From the B position, it is possible to manuallyshift down to lower gears. B can be selected atany time while driving. When the acceleratorpedal is released, the electric motor brakes thevehicle and the hybrid battery is recharged at thesame time. This offers additional opportunities torecharge the hybrid battery, since the battery ischarged even when the brake pedal is notdepressed.
Select brake by moving the gear selector rear-ward from the D position. The currently selectedgear will be displayed in the instrument panel.
Pull the gear selector backward once to shiftdown one gear.
Pull the gear selector backward again to shiftdown to lower gears.
To shift manually to a higher gear, the vehiclemust be equipped with steering wheel paddles*.
Push the gear selector forward to return to Dmode.
For smooth shifting and engine performance, thetransmission will shift down automatically if thevehicle's speed becomes too low for the selectedgear.

Using the steering wheel paddles*to shift
The steering wheel paddles are a supplement tothe gear selector and make it possible to shiftmanually without removing your hands from thesteering wheel.
"-": Shift down one gear.
"+": Shift up one gear.

Activating the steering wheel paddles
In order to shift gears using the paddles, theymust first be activated:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel.
>A number in the instrument panel indi-cates the current gear being used.

Change
To shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steeringwheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is within thepermissible range for the selected gear, a gearshift will take place each time a paddle is pulled.After each gear shift, a number indicating thecurrent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and B
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the rightpaddle (+) toward the steering wheel andholding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instrumentpanel.
>The transmission will revert to gear D or Bdepending on which gear was selectedbefore the paddles were activated.

Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddlesare deactivated after a short period of time if theyare not used. The number of the current gear willno longer be displayed in the instrument panel.
In gear position B, the paddles will not activateautomatically.

Shiftlock
The automatic transmission's shiftlock functionhelps prevent inadvertently moving the gearselector between different positions.

From Park - P
To move to another gear from P (Park), the brakepedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.

From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle hasbeen stationary for at least 3 seconds (with orwithout the engine running), the gear selector willbe locked in that position.
To move the gear selector from N to anothergear, the brake pedal must be depressed and theignition in mode II.

Messages in the instrument panel
If the gear selector is locked in position, a mes-sage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.Gear lever Press brake pedal to activategear lever.
There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

This drive mode is optimized for maximum drivingdistance with electric propulsion and is primarilyintended for use in city driving. Pure helps pro-vide the lowest possible consumption even whenthe hybrid battery is fully discharged. ECO climateis activated to control the climate in the passen-ger compartment, and in slippery road conditionsslightly more wheel spin may be permitted beforeall-wheel drive is automatically activated.

ECO Climate
In Pure mode, ECO climate is automatically acti-vated in the passenger compartment to helpreduce energy consumption.

NOTE
When the Pure drive mode is activated, set-tings for certain climate system and electricityconsuming functions are reduced. Some ofthese settings can be reset manually, but fullfunctionality will only be restored by leavingPure mode or adapting the Individual drivemode to full climate system functionality.
If condensation forms on the windows, tap themax defroster button, which will function normally.

Constant AWD
Improves the vehicle's traction and handlingby increasing all-wheel drive.
This drive mode locks the vehicle in all-wheeldrive. An optimal distribution between front andrear axle torque helps provide the best possible
control, stability and traction, e.g. on slipperyroads or when towing a heavy trailer or anothervehicle. The Constant AWD drive mode isalways available regardless of the hybrid battery'scharge status.
Both the combustion engine and the electricmotor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption.
In the other drive modes, the vehicle automati-cally adapts the need for all-wheel drive accord-ing to the road surface, and can activate the elec-tric motor or start the combustion engine as nee-ded.
Power
The vehicle gets sportier driving characteris-tics and a faster acceleration response.
This drive mode maximizes the combined powerfrom the combustion engine and the electricmotor by providing power to both the front andrear wheels. Gear shifting will be faster and moredistinct and the transmission will prioritize gearswith a higher traction force. Steering response isfaster and suspension is stiffer.
Both the combustion engine and the electricmotor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption.
This drive mode is optimized for maximum per-formance and throttle response. It changes thethrottle response, gear shifting program andturbo boost system. Chassis settings and steer-ing and brake response are also optimized. The
Power drive mode is always available regardlessof the hybrid battery's charge status.

Driving through standing water
It may be necessary to drive the vehicle throughstanding water, e.g. deep puddles or flooding onthe road. This must be done with great caution.
To help prevent damage to the vehicle when driv-ing through water:
Do not drive in water higher than the floor ofthe vehicle. If possible, check the depth ofthe water at its deepest point before drivingthrough it. Be particularly careful when driv-ing through flowing water.
Do not drive faster than walking speed.
Do not stop the vehicle in the water. Drivecarefully forward or back the vehicle out ofthe water.
Remember that waves created by passingvehicles could cause the water level to riseabove the vehicle's floor level.
Avoid driving through salt water to help avoidthe risk of corrosion.

CAUTION
Parts of the vehicle (e.g. engine, transmission,driveline, electrical components, etc.) can bedamaged if the vehicle is driven through waterhigher than its floor level. Damage to anycomponents caused by flooding, vapor lock orinsufficient oil is not covered under warranty.
If the engine stalls while the vehicle is inwater, do not attempt to restart it. Have thevehicle towed on the bed of a tow truck to aworkshop - an authorized Volvo workshop isrecommended.

CAUTION
Because it can be difficult to determine thewater depth, avoid driving through standing orrunning water.
When you have passed the water, press lightly onthe brake pedal and check that the brakes arefunctioning properly. Water, mud, slush, etc. canmake the brake linings slippery, resulting indelayed braking effect.
If the vehicle is equipped with a trailer couplingcontact, clean the contact after driving in water ormud.

Use of Additives
With the exception of gas line antifreeze duringwinter months, do not add solvents, thickeners, orother store-bought additives to your vehicle'sfuel, cooling, or lubricating systems. Overuse maydamage your engine, and some of these additivescontain organically volatile chemicals. Do notneedlessly expose yourself to these chemicals.

WARNING
Never carry a cell phone that is switched onwhile refueling your vehicle. If the phone rings,this may cause a spark that could ignite gaso-line fumes, resulting in fire and injury.

WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless,and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumes insidethe vehicle, make sure the passenger com-partment is ventilated, and immediately returnthe vehicle to a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician for correction.

Demanding driving
In demanding driving conditions, such as whentowing a trailer or driving in hot weather or forprolonged periods at high altitudes, it may be agood idea to switch to a higher-octane fuel
(AKI10 91 or higher) or to switch to another
brand of gasoline in order to fully utilize the vehi-cle's engine capacity and optimize traction.

Three-way catalytic converter
Keep your engine properly tuned. Certainengine malfunctions, particularly involving theelectrical, fuel or distributor ignition systems,may cause unusually high three-way catalyticconverter temperatures. Do not continue tooperate your vehicle if you detect enginemisfire, noticeable loss of power or otherunusual operating conditions, such as engineoverheating or backfiring. A properly tunedengine will help avoid malfunctions thatcould damage the three-way catalytic con-verter.
Do not park your vehicle over combustiblematerials, such as grass or leaves, which cancome into contact with the hot exhaust sys-tem and cause such materials to ignite undercertain wind and weather conditions.
Excessive starter cranking (in excess of oneminute), or an intermittently firing or floodedengine can cause three-way catalytic con-verter or exhaust system overheating.
Remember that tampering or unauthorizedmodifications to the engine, the Engine Con-trol Module, or the vehicle may be illegal andcan cause three-way catalytic converter orexhaust system overheating. This includes:altering fuel injection settings or compo-nents, altering emission system components
