FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined toofar can take weight off the seat cushionand affect the decision of the passengersensing system, resulting in serious injuryor death in the event of a crash. Always situpright against your seat back, with yourfeet on the floor.
WARNING: Any alteration ormodification to the front passenger seatmay affect the performance of the frontpassenger sensing system. This couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator whichilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either on(enabled) or off (disabled). The indicator lampis in the center stack of the instrument panel.
Note:When you first switch the ignition on,the passenger airbag status indicator off andon lamps illuminate for a short period toconfirm it is functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag under certainconditions:
•The front passenger seat is unoccupied.
•The system determines an infant ispresent in a child restraint.
•A passenger takes their weight off of theseat for a period of time.
•If there is a problem with the airbagsystem or the passenger sensing system.
Even with this technology, parents arestrongly encouraged to always properlyrestrain children in the rear seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the offlamp and stays lit to remind you that thefront passenger frontal airbag is disabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the on lamp, then switch yourvehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom your vehicle and reinstall therestraint following the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

The front passenger sensing system workswith sensors that are part of the frontpassenger seat and seatbelt. The sensorsare designed to detect the presence of aproperly seated occupant and determine ifthe front passenger frontal airbag should beenabled.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the onlamp and remains illuminated.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the passenger airbagstatus indicator off lamp is lit, it is possiblethat the person is not sitting properly in theseat. If this happens:
•Switch your vehicle off and ask theperson to place the seatback in anupright position.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat,centered on the seat cushion, with theperson's legs comfortably extended.
•Restart your vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system to detectthat person and enable the passengerfrontal airbag.
•If the indicator off lamp remains lit evenafter this, you should advise the personto ride in the rear seat.
Note:When the passenger airbag statusindicator off lamp illuminates, the passengerside airbag (seat mounted) may be disabledto avoid the risk of airbag deploymentissues.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seatback, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the state of the passengerairbag status indicator lamp is incorrect,check for the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in theprevious list.

Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 59).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat or cargo interfering withthe seat.
If objects are lodged or cargo is interferingwith the seat, please take the following stepsto remove the obstruction:
•Pull your vehicle over.
•Switch your vehicle off.
•Driver or adult passengers should checkfor any objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat or cargo interferingwith the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart your vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light in theinstrument cluster remains illuminated,this may or may not be a problem due tothe front passenger sensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.
If it is necessary to modify an advanced frontairbag system to accommodate a personwith disabilities, contact your CustomerRelationship Center.
SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNING: Do not place objects ormount equipment on or near the airbagcover, on the side of the front or rearseatbacks, or in areas that may come intocontact with a deploying airbag. Failure tofollow these instructions may increase therisk of personal injury in the event of acrash.
WARNING: Do not use accessoryseat covers. The use of accessory seatcovers may prevent the deployment of theside airbags and increase the risk of injuryin an accident.
WARNING: Do not lean your headon the door. The side airbag could injureyou as it deploys from the side of theseatback.

WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
The side airbags are on the outermost sideof the seat backrests of the front seats. Theairbag was designed to inflate between thedoor panel and occupant to further enhancethe protection provided occupants in sideimpact crashes.
The system consists of the following:
•A label or embossed side panelindicating that side airbags are found onyour vehicle.
•Side airbags inside the seat backrest ofthe driver and front passenger seats.
•Front passenger sensing system.
·Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 59).
The design and development of the sideairbag system included recommendedtesting procedures that were developed bya group of automotive safety experts knownas the Side Airbag Technical Working Group.These recommended testing procedureshelp reduce the risk of injuries related to thedeployment of side airbags.
SAFETY CANOPY™
WARNING: Do not place objects ormount equipment on or near the headlinerat the siderail that may come into contactwith a deploying curtain airbag. Failure tofollow these instructions may increase therisk of personal injury in the event of acrash.
WARNING: Do not lean your headon the door. The curtain airbag could injureyou as it deploys from the headliner.

WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: To reduce risk of injury,do not obstruct or place objects in thedeployment path of the airbag.
WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
The Safety Canopy deploys during significantside crashes or when a certain likelihood ofa rollover event is detected by the rolloversensor. The Safety Canopy is mounted tothe roof side rail sheet metal, behind theheadliner, above each row of seats. In certainsideways crashes or rollover events, theSafety Canopy will be activated, regardlessof which seats are occupied. The SafetyCanopy is designed to inflate between theside window area and occupants to furtherenhance protection provided in side impactcrashes and rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags above thetrim panels over the front and rear sidewindows identified by a label or wordingon the headliner or roof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 59).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.

The design and development of the SafetyCanopy included recommended testingprocedures that were developed by a groupof automotive safety experts known as theSide Airbag Technical Working Group. Theserecommended testing procedures helpreduce the risk of injuries related to thedeployment of side airbags (including theSafety Canopy).
CRASH SENSORS AND AIRBAG
INDICATOR
WARNING: Modifying or addingequipment to the front end of your vehicle(including hood, bumper system, frame,front end body structure, tow hooks andhood pins) may affect the performance ofthe airbag system, increasing the risk ofinjury. Do not modify or add equipment tothe front end of your vehicle.
Your vehicle has a collection of crash andoccupant sensors which provide informationto the restraints control module whichdeploys (activates) the front seatbeltpretensioners, driver airbag, passengerairbag, rear inflatable belts, seat mountedside airbags, and the Safety Canopy. Basedon the type of crash, the restraints controlmodule will deploy the appropriate safetydevices.
The restraints control module also monitorsthe readiness of the above safety devicesplus the crash and occupant sensors. Thereadiness of the safety system is indicatedby a warning indicator light in the instrumentcluster or by a backup tone if the warninglight is not working. See Instrument Cluster(page 113). Routine maintenance of theairbag is not required.
A difficulty with the system is indicated byone or more of the following:
The readiness light will notilluminate immediately after youswitch the ignition on.
•The readiness light either flashes or stayslit.
•A series of five beeps will be heard. Thetone pattern will repeat periodically untilthe problem, the light or both arerepaired.
If any of these things happen, evenintermittently, have the supplementalrestraint system serviced at an authorizeddealer immediately. Unless serviced, thesystem may not function properly in theevent of a crash.

The fact that the seatbelt pretensioners orfront airbags did not activate for both frontseat occupants in a crash does not meanthat something is wrong with the system.Rather, it means the restraints control moduledetermined the accident conditions (crashseverity, belt usage) were not appropriate toactivate these safety devices.
•The design of the front airbags is toactivate only in frontal and near-frontalcrashes (not rollovers, side impacts orrear impacts) unless the crash causessufficient frontal deceleration.
•The design of the seatbelt pretensionersand rear inflatable belts is to activate infrontal, near-frontal and side crashes, andin rollovers.
•The design of the side airbags is to inflatein certain side impact crashes. Sideairbags may activate in other types ofcrashes if the vehicle experiencessufficient sideways motion ordeformation.
•The design of the Safety Canopy is toinflate in certain side impact crashes orrollover events. The Safety Canopy mayactivate in other types of crashes if thevehicle experiences sufficient sidewaysmotion or deformation, or a certainlikelihood of rollover.
AIRBAG DISPOSAL
Contact your authorized dealer as soon aspossible. Airbags must be disposed of byqualified personnel.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON
RADIO FREQUENCIES
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCCRules and with Licence exempt RSSStandards of Industry Canada. Operation issubject to the following two conditions:
•This device may not cause harmfulinterference, and
•This device must accept any interferencereceived, including interference that maycause undesired operation.
Note:Changes or modifications notexpressively approved by the partyresponsible for compliance could void theuser's authority to operate the equipment.The term "IC:" before the radio certificationnumber only signifies that Industry Canadatechnical specifications were met.
The typical operating range for yourtransmitter is approximately 33 ft (10 m).Vehicles with the remote start feature willhave a greater range. One of the followingcould cause a decrease in operating range:
•Weather conditions.
•Nearby radio towers.
•Structures around the vehicle.
•Other vehicles parked next to yourvehicle.
The radio frequency used by your remotecontrol can also be used by other radiotransmitters, for example amateur radios,medical equipment, wireless headphones,wireless remote controls, cell phones, batterychargers and alarm systems. If thefrequencies are jammed, you will not be ableto use your remote control. You can lockand unlock the doors with the key.
Note:Make sure you lock your vehiclebefore leaving it unattended.
Note:If you are within range of your vehicle,the remote control will operate if youunintentionally press any button.
Intelligent Access
The system uses a radio frequency signal tocommunicate with your vehicle andauthorizes your vehicle to unlock when oneof the following conditions are met:
•You touch the unlock sensor on the backof the door handle with the intelligentaccess key within 3 ft (1 m) of yourvehicle.
•You press the luggage compartmentbutton.
•You press the unlock button on thetransmitter.
If excessive radio frequency interference ispresent in the area or if the transmitterbattery is low, you may need to mechanicallyunlock your door. You can use themechanical key blade in your intelligentaccess key to open the driver door in thissituation. See Remote Control (page 62).
