Any child who is too large to use a childrestraint system should ride in the rearseat and wear the la
p-and-shoulder belt
properly. The shoulder belt must be posi-tioned over the shou
lder and across the
chest, not across their neck, and with thelap belt positioned low on the child’s hips,not across their stomach. If necessary, abooster seat should be
used to help achieve
a proper seat belt fi
t. Follow the booster
seat manufacturer’s instructions. Only usea booster seat that is
certified as comply-
ing with Federal Motor Vehicle SafetyStandards or Motor Vehicle Restraint Sys-tems and Booster Seats Safety Regula-tions. WA R N I N G

1. In order to securely
fasten the tether strap,
remove the head restraint from the loca-tion where you wish to install the childrestraint system.2. Open the gap a little between the seatcushion (A) and the seatback (B) withyour hand to locate the lower anchors (C).

For easier access, the seatback may berecline rearward.Push the anchor connectors (D) on thechild restraint system into the loweranchors (C) in accordance with theinstructions provided by the child restraintsystem’s manufacturer.After it is security fastened, adjust theseatback to 4 steps forward from mostreclined position.Remember, the lower anchors (C) pro-vided with your vehi
cle are designed to
secure suitable child restraint systemscompatible with the LATCH system inthe outboard positions of the secondrow seats only. The anchor connectorsare NOT designed to secure a suitablechild restraint system in the middleseating position of the second row seat.
4. Latch the tether strap hook (E) of the childrestraint system to the tether anchor bar(F) and tighten the tether strap so it issecurely fastened.5. Push and pull the chil
d restraint system in
all directions to ensure it is firmlysecured.

NOTE
In order to secure a child restraint systemcompatible with the LATCH system, use thelower anchor points in the outboard positionsof the second row seat. It is not necessary touse the vehicle’s seat
belt. The vehicle’s seat
belt, however, MUST be
used to secure a
child restraint system in the middle seatingposition of the second row seat.WA R N I N GIf there is any foreign material in oraround the lower an
chors, remove it
before installing the child restraint sys-tem. Also, make sure the seat belt is awayfrom, not looped through or otherwiseinterfering with, the child restraint sys-tem. If foreign matter is not removedand/or the seat belt
interferes with the
child restraint system, the child restraintsystem will not be secured properly, coulddetach and move forw
ard in the event of
sudden braking or an
accident, and could
result in injury to the child or other vehi-cle occupants.When the vehicle is
moving, do not adjust
the seat where the child restraint system isinstalled.

With the exception of the driver, the seat beltin all other seating pos
itions can be converted
from normal Emergency Locking Retractor(ELR) mode, to Automatic Locking Retractor(ALR) mode. This mean
s that when you pull
the seat belt fully out of the retractor, theretractor will switch to its ALR child restraint
installation function.
Always use the ALR
child restraint installation function when youinstall a child restraint system using the seatbelt.Children 12 years old and under shouldalways be restrained in the rear seat, when-ever possible, although the front passengerseat belt can also be converted to ALR mode.
1. Place the child restraint system on the seatwhere you wish to install it.To help assure proper fitting of the childrestraint system, alwa
ys remove the head
restraint.When installing the front-facing childrestraint system on the second row seat,adjust the angle of the second row seat-back to the most upright position.
When using a child restraint in a rearseating position, always review theinstructions provided with that restraintto make sure it is compatible with thisvehicle and to understand how to properlyinstall it.Child restraints, incl
uding booster seats,
come in different sizes and configurations.Depending on where you
place these child
restraints, and depending on their size andconfiguration, you may not be able toaccess or properly use one or more adja-cent seat belt assemblies. If this occurs,the adjacent seating po
sition or positions
should not be used. Failure to use a seatbelt or improper use of a seat belt canresult in serious inju
ry or death should a
crash occur.
Installing a child restraint sys-tem using the seat belt (with emergency/auto
matic locking
mechanism)

WA R N I N GWhen you install a child restraint systemusing the seat belt, al
ways make sure the
retractor has been switched to the ALRchild restraint installation function. TheALR function will keep the child restraintsystem tightly secured to the seat.Failure to convert the retractor to theALR function may allow the childrestraint system to move forward duringsudden braking
or an accide
nt, resulting
in serious injury or
death to the child or
other occupants.
When using a child restraint in a rearseating position, al
ways review the
instructions provided with that restraintto make sure it is compatible with thisvehicle and to understand how to properlyinstall it.Child restraints, including booster seats,come in different sizes and configurations.Depending on where you

2. Route the seat belt through the childrestraint system acco
rding to the instruc-
tions provided by the child restraint sys-tem’s manufacturer. Then insert the seatbelt latch plate into
the buckle. Make sure
you hear a “click” when you insert thelatch plate into the buckle.
3. To activate the ALR child restraint instal-lation function, slowly pull the shoulderpart of the belt all the way out of theretractor until it stops. Then let the beltfeed back into the retractor.4. After the belt has retracted, tug on it.If the belt is in the ALR function, you willnot be able to pull it out. If the webbingcan be pulled out from retractor, the ALRfunction has not been activated and youwill need to repeat steps 3 and 4.
5. After confirming that the belt is locked,grab the shoulder part of the belt near thebuckle and pull up to remove any slackfrom the lap part of the belt allowing theslack to feed into the retractor. Remember,if the lap belt portion is not tight, the childrestraint system
will not be secure. It may
help to put your weight on the childrestraint system and/or push on its seat-back while pulling up on the belt (Seeillustration).
If your child restraint system requires the useof a tether strap, fasten the tether strap inaccordance with the following procedures.

6. Latch the tether strap hook (A) of thechild restraint system to the tether anchorbar (B) and tighten the tether strap so it issecurely fastened.
7. Before putting your child in the restraint,push and pull the restraint in all directionsto be sure it is firmly secure. Do thisbefore each use. If the child restraint sys-tem is not firmly s
ecure, repeat steps 1
through 6.8. To remove a child restraint system fromthe vehicle and deac
tivate the ALR mode,
remove the child from the restraint.Unlatch the buckle. Th
en remove the belt
from the restraint and let the belt fullyretract.9. Reinstall the head restraint.Refer to “Head restraints” on page 4-11.

Children who have outgrown a child restraintsystem should be seated in the rear seat andwear the seat belt. If the shoulder belt crossestheir face or neck, and/
or the lap belt crosses
their stomach, a commercially availablebooster seat must be used to raise the child sothat the shoulder belt

Restraint System (SRS), which includes air-bags for the driver and passengers.The SRS front airbags are designed to supple-ment the primary protection of the driver andfront passenger seat belt systems by provid-ing those occupants w
ith protection against
head and chest injuries
in certain moderate to
severe frontal collisi
ons. The SRS front air-
bags, together with sensors at the front of thevehicle and sensors attached to the frontseats, form an advanced airbag system.The SRS driver’s knee airbag is designed tosupplement the primary protection of thedriver’s seat belt system. It can reduce theforward movement of the driver’s lower legsand provide increased
overall body protection
in certain moderate to
severe frontal colli-
sions.The SRS side airbags and the curtain airbagsare also designed to supp
lement the seat belts.
The SRS side airbags provide the driver andfront passenger with pr
otection against chest
injuries by deploying the bag on the sideimpacted in moderate
to severe side impact
collisions. The SRS curtain airbags provide
the driver and the passengers on the front seatand the second row outboard seats with pro-tection against head injuries by deploying thecurtain airbag on the si
de impacted in moder-
ate to severe side imp
act collisions and by
deploying both curtain
airbags when a roll-
over is detected. The curtain airbags are alsodesigned to help reduce the risk of completeand partial ejection fro
m the vehicle through
side windows in both side impact and roll-over type accidents.The SRS airbags are NOT a substitute for useof the seat belts. For maximum protection inall types of accident
s, seat belts must
ALWAYS be worn by everyone who drives orrides in this vehicle
(with infants and small
children in an appropriate child restraint sys-tem in the rear seat, and older children buck-led in the rear seat). Refer to “Child restraintsystems” on page 4-27.

Never use an organic solvent to clean theseat belt webbing. Do not attempt tobleach or re-dye th
e seat belt webbing.
These may weaken the
seat belt webbing,
increasing risk of in
jury or death in an
accident.Clean seat belt webbing only with mildsoap or detergent solution and rinse itwith lukewarm water, and dry the seatbelt webbing completely before retractingit.
