Changing the drive mode automaticallychanges the functionality of the followingsystems:
•Electronically power-assisted steeringsystem adjusts steering effort and feelbased on the mode you select. SeeSteering (page 280).
•Electronic stability control and tractioncontrol maintain your vehicle control inadverse conditions or high performancedriving. See Stability Control (page 233).
•Electronic throttle control enhances thepowertrain response to your inputs.
•Transmission controls optimize with shiftschedules tuned to each mode.
•Driveline settings optimize for eachmode.
Using the System
The system automatically tailors your vehicleconfiguration for each mode you select.
To change the drive mode setting, use thedrive mode selector on the center console.
Note:Mode changes are not available whenthe vehicle ignition is off or when the engineis not running.
•NORMAL – For everyday driving. Thismode is a perfect balance of excitement, comfort and convenience.
•EXCITE – For aggressive on-road driving. This mode increases throttle response, provides a sportier steering feel, alongwith quicker shifting. The suspensionstiffens, with an emphasis on handlingand control. The transmission also holdsgears longer, helping your vehicleaccelerate faster when shifting gears.
•CONSERVE – Enables efficient andresponsible driving. It helps delivermaximum fuel efficiency and increasesdriving range.
•NORMAL 4A – For general on-roaddriving. Use this mode on normal firmsurfaces such as dry or wet pavementand hard packed dirt or gravel roads.Delivers power to all four wheels, asrequired.

TOWING A TRAILER
WARNING: Towing trailersbeyond the maximum recommendedgross trailer weight exceeds the limitof your vehicle and could result inengine damage, transmission damage, structural damage, loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover and personalinjury.
WARNING: Do not exceed theGVWR or the GAWR specified on thecertification label.
Note: See Recommended TowingWeights (page 310).
Your vehicle may have electrical items, such as fuses or relays, related totowing. See Fuses (page 342).
Your vehicle's load capacity designationis by weight, not by volume, so youcannot necessarily use all availablespace when loading a vehicle or trailer.
Towing a trailer places an extra load onyour vehicle's engine, transmission, axle, brakes, tires and suspension. Inspectthese components periodically during, and after, any towing operation.
Load Placement
To help minimize how trailer movementaffects your vehicle when driving:
•Load the heaviest items closest tothe trailer floor.
•Load the heaviest items centeredbetween the left and right side trailertires.
•Load the heaviest items above thetrailer axles or just slightly forwardtoward the trailer tongue. Do notallow the final trailer tongue weightto go above or below 10-15% of theloaded trailer weight.
•Select a ball mount with the correctrise or drop and load capacity. Whenboth the loaded vehicle and trailerare connected, the trailer frameshould be level, or slightly angleddown toward your vehicle, whenviewed from the side.
When driving with a trailer or payload, aslight takeoff vibration or shudder maybe present due to the increased payloadweight. Additional information regardingproper trailer loading and setting yourvehicle up for towing is located inanother chapter of this manual. SeeLoad Limit (page 293).

Pro Trailer Backup Assist™
WARNING: Driving while distractedcan result in loss of vehicle control, crashand injury. We strongly recommend thatyou use extreme caution when using anydevice that may take your focus off theroad. Your primary responsibility is the safeoperation of your vehicle. We recommendagainst the use of any hand-held devicewhile driving and encourage the use ofvoice-operated systems when possible.Make sure you are aware of all applicablelocal laws that may affect the use ofelectronic devices while driving.
WARNING: This system is an extradriving aid. It does not replace yourattention and judgment, or the need toapply the brakes. This system does NOTautomatically brake your vehicle. If you failto press the brake pedal when necessary, you may collide with another vehicle.
Note:The system is not a substitute for safedriving practices.
Note:You must always be aware of thevehicle and trailer combination and thesurrounding environment.
Note:The system does not detect or preventthe vehicle or trailer from making contactwith obstacles in the surroundingenvironment.
Note:Keep in mind that the front end of thevehicle swings out when changing thedirection of the trailer.
Note:The system relies on usermeasurements to determine stickerplacement and system limits. It is critical totake the key measurements correctly.Incorrect measurements can result in theimproper function of the system up to andincluding contact between the vehicle andtrailer.
Note:The system limits vehicle speed whenbacking up. The system is not a replacementfor proper use of the throttle and brakepedals.
Principle of Operation
This feature helps you to steer your vehiclewhen reversing with a trailer attached. Turnand hold the control knob in the directionyou want the trailer to go and the systemtakes over the steering. This allows you tofocus on checking the mirrors and operatingthe brake and accelerator.

The system is not available:
•The system relies on many sub-systemsin your vehicle to operate correctly. Ifthose sub-systems are not operatingcorrectly the system may not beavailable.
•Low battery voltage is a condition whichwill prevent the system from operating. Please make sure the battery is correctlycharged if the system is not available.
•You may need to drive your vehiclestraight forward above 25 mph (40 km/h)before the system is available again.
•If the message still displays take yourvehicle to an authorized dealer forservice.
Sticker lost:
•If the system cannot initially find thesticker, it may be necessary for you tochange the lighting conditions by movingthe vehicle and trailer or waiting untilconditions change.
•Check for the following if you receive thelost sticker message while using thesystem.
•Stop your vehicle as soon as themessage displays.
•Make sure the sticker is visible and thepattern is discernable in the rear viewcamera image.
•Clean the sticker and camera to makesure they are unobstructed.
•Clean the lens with a soft, lint-free clothand water.
•Clean the sticker with isopropyl rubbingalcohol sprayed directly onto the sticker, and then wipe clean with a soft cloth.
•Remove any items that may be blockingthe view of the sticker. Depending onyour trailer configuration and anyequipment mounted to your trailer it ispossible for the sticker to be blockedfrom view of the camera as it rotates onthe hitch ball but not be blocked duringsetup. Remove the obstruction ifpossible. It will be necessary to removethe sticker from it’s current location if theobstruction cannot be cleared and placea new sticker that will be visible to thecamera in all positions of the trailerbehind your vehicle.
•Placing the sticker on a surface angledaway from the vehicle reducesperformance. Use a drawbar thatpositions the trailer level to the groundwhen attached to vehicle. This typicallyprovides a level surface to mount thesticker. Place the sticker on a bracket orother object when no level surface isavailable.
•Make sure the entire sticker is on a flatsurface that is completely visible to thecamera. Do not fold the sticker over anedge on the trailer frame. This candegrade performance.
•Shadows on the sticker may effecttracking performance under somelighting conditions. Moving the sticker toanother location within the allowedplacement area may improveperformance. Use the change stickeroption in your Towing menu if you movethe sticker.

Towing
The gain setting sets the trailer brakecontroller for the specific towing condition. You should change the setting as towingconditions change. Changes to towingconditions include trailer load, vehicle load, road conditions and weather.
The gain should be set to provide themaximum trailer braking assistance whilemaking sure the trailer wheels do not lockwhen using the brakes. Locked trailer wheelsmay lead to trailer instability.
1.Make sure the trailer brakes are in goodworking condition, functioning normallyand properly adjusted. See your trailerdealer if necessary.
2. Hook up the trailer and make theelectrical connections according to thetrailer manufacturer's instructions.
3.When you plug in a trailer with electric orelectric-over-hydraulic brakes, a messageconfirming connection appears in theinformation display.
4.Use the gain adjustment (+ and -) buttonsto increase or decrease the gain settingto the desired starting point. A gainsetting of 6.0 is a good starting point forheavier loads.
5. In a traffic-free environment, tow thetrailer on a dry, level surface at a speedof 20–25 mph (32–40 km/h) andsqueeze the manual control levercompletely.
6.If the trailer wheels lock up, indicated bysquealing tires, reduce the gain setting. If the trailer wheels turn freely, increasethe gain setting. Repeat Steps 5 and 6until the gain setting is at a point justbelow trailer wheel lock-up. If towing aheavier trailer, trailer wheel lock-up maynot be attainable even with the maximumgain setting of 10.
Explanation of Information Display WarningMessages
Note:An authorized dealer can diagnosethe trailer brake controller to determineexactly which trailer fault has occurred. However, your warranty does not cover thisdiagnosis if the fault is with the trailer.
A message indicating a trailer brake modulefault may display in response to faults sensedby the trailer brake controller, accompaniedby a single tone. If this message appears, contact an authorized dealer as soon aspossible for diagnosis and repair. Thecontroller may still function, but performancemay be degraded.
A message indicating a trailer wiring faultmay display when there is a short circuit onthe electric brake output wire. If this messagedisplays, accompanied by a single tone, withno trailer connected, the problem is with yourvehicle wiring between the trailer brakecontroller and the 7-pin connector at thebumper. If the message only displays with atrailer connected, the problem is with thetrailer wiring. Consult your trailer dealer forassistance. This can be a short to ground(such as a chaffed wire), short to voltage(such as a pulled pin on trailer emergencybreakaway battery) or the trailer brakes maybe drawing too much current.

Points to Remember
Note:Do not attempt removal of the trailerbrake controller without consulting theWorkshop Manual. Damage to the unit mayresult.
•Adjust gain setting before using thetrailer brake controller for the first time.
•Adjust gain setting, using the procedureabove, whenever road, weather andtrailer or vehicle loading conditionschange from when the gain was initiallyset.
•Only use the manual control lever forproper adjustment of the gain duringtrailer setup. Misuse, such as applicationduring trailer sway, could cause instabilityof trailer or tow vehicle.
•Avoid towing in adverse weatherconditions. The trailer brake controllerdoes not provide anti-lock control of thetrailer wheels. Trailer wheels can lock upon slippery surfaces, resulting in reducedstability of trailer and tow vehicle.
•The trailer brake controller is equippedwith a feature that reduces output atvehicle speeds below 11 mph (18 km/h)so trailer and vehicle braking is not jerkyor harsh. This feature is only availablewhen applying the brakes using yourvehicle's brake pedal, not the controller.
•The controller interacts with the brakecontrol system and powertrain controlsystem of your vehicle to provide thebest performance on different roadconditions.
•Your vehicle's brake system and thetrailer brake system work independentlyof each other. Changing the gain settingon the controller does not affect theoperation of your vehicle's brakeswhether you attach a trailer or not.
•When you switch the engine off, thecontroller output is disabled and thedisplay and module shut down. Thecontroller module and display turn onwhen you switch the ignition on.
•The trailer brake controller is only afactory-installed or dealer-installed item.Lincoln is not responsible for warranty orperformance of the controller due tomisuse or customer installation.
Trailer Lamps
WARNING: Never connect any trailerlamp wiring to the vehicle's tail lamp wiring;this may damage the electrical systemresulting in fire. Contact your authorizeddealer as soon as possible for assistancein proper trailer tow wiring installation.Additional electrical equipment may berequired.
Trailer lamps are required on most towedvehicles. Make sure all running lights, brakelights, turn signals and hazard lights areworking.
