to the selected options or country versions.
This also applies to safety-related functions
and systems. When using these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations
must be observed.
Start/Stop
buttonConcept Pressing the Start/Stop button
switches drive-ready state on or off, refer to page 21.
Steptronic transmission: the drive-ready state is switched on
when you depress the brake pedal while pressj ing the Start/Stop button.
Pressing the Start/Stop button again switches
drive-ready state back off and standby state, refer to page 21, is switched back on.

If the exhaust pipe is blocked or ventilaj
tion is insufficient, harmful exhaust gases can
enter into the vehicle. The exhaust gases conj tain pollutants which are colorless and odorj
less. In enclosed areas, exhaust gases can also
accumulate outside of the vehicle. There is
danger to life. Keep the exhaust pipe free and
ensure sufficient ventilation.'

Start/Stop
function
Concept
The Auto Start/Stop function helps save fuel. The system switches off the engine during a
stop, for instance in traffic congestion or at
traffic lights. Drive-ready state remains
switched on. The engine starts automatically
for driving off.
General
information After each engine start using the Start/Stop
button, the Auto Start/Stop function is ready.
The function is activated from speeds of apj
prox. 3 mph/5 km/h.
Depending on the selected driving mode, refer
to page 115, the system is automatically actij
vated or deactivated.

'yPress the brake pedal forcefully again from

If all functional preconditions are fulfilled, the

engine

off
The air flow from the air conditioner is reducedwhen the engine is switched off.
Displays

cluster
General
information The display in the tachometer
indicates that the Auto Start/ Stop function is ready for an Auj
tomatic engine start.
The display indicates that the conditions for an automatic enjgine stop have not been met.

The engine starts automatically under the folj lowing preconditions:'yBy releasing the brake pedal.'yWhen Automatic Hold is activated: pressthe accelerator pedal.
Driving
away
After the engine starts, accelerate as usual.
Safety
mode
After the engine switches off automatically, it will not start again automatically if any one of
the following conditions are met:
'yThe driver's safety belt is unbuckled and
the driver's door is open.'yThe hood was unlocked.
Some indicator lights light up for a varied length of time.
The engine can only be started via the Start/
Stop button.

Even if driving off was not intended, the deactij
vated engine starts up automatically in the folj lowing situations:
'yExcessive warming of the car's interiorwhen the air conditioning is switched on.'yExcessive cooling of the car's interior when

Auto
Start/Stop
functionDepending on the vehicle equipment andcountry-specific version, the vehicle features avariety of sensors for assessing the traffic sitjuation. The Intelligent Auto Start/Stop functionuses this information to adapt to various traffic
situations in a proactive manner.
For instance, this applies to the following sitj
uations:
'yIf a situation is detected in which the stopj ping time is expected to be very short, theengine is not switched off automatically. Amessage appears on the Control Display,
depending on the situation.'yIf a situation is detected in which the vehij cle needs to drive off immediately, the enj
gine is started automatically.
The function may be restricted if the navigaj
tion data is invalid, outdated or not available,
for example.

During an automatic engine stop, the vehicle
can be switched off permanently, for instance
when leaving it.

information
In certain situations, the Auto Start/Stop funcj
tion is deactivated automatically for safety reaj sons, for instance if no driver is detected.

Malfunction
The Auto Start/Stop function no longer switches off the engine automatically. A CheckControl message is displayed. It is possible to
continue driving. Have the system checked by a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.

Concept
The parking brake is used to prevent the vehij
cle from rolling when it is parked.
Safety
information WARNING
An unsecured vehicle can begin to move
and possibly roll away. There is a risk of an acj cident. Before exiting, secure the vehicle
against rolling.
In order to ensure that the vehicle is secured against rolling away, follow the following:'ySet the parking brake.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
turn the front wheels in the direction of the
curb.'yOn uphill grades or on a downhill slope,
also secure the vehicle, for instance with a
wheel chock.'

Hold
Concept
This system assists the driver by automatically setting and releasing the brake, such as when
moving in stop-and-go traffic.
The vehicle is automatically held in place when
it is stationary.
On uphill grades the system prevents the vehij cle from rolling backward when driving offf.
General
information Under the following conditions, the parkingbrake is automatically engaged:
'yDrive-ready state is switched off.'yThe driver's door is opened while the vehijcle is stationary.'yThe moving vehicle is brought to a standj
still using the parking brake.

The indicator light changes from greento red.
