Data
memory
General
A
number
of
electronic
control
devices
are
instalj
led
in
your
vehicle.
Some
of
these
are
necessary
for
the
vehicle
to
function
safely
or
provide
assisj
tance
during
driving,
for
example
Driver
Assisj
tance
Systems.
There
are
also
control
devices
which
manage
comfort
or
infotainment
functions.
Electronic
control
devices
contain
data
memoj
ries,
which
can
temporarily
or
permanently
store
information
about
the
vehicle's
condition,
comj
ponent
use
and
wear,
maintenance
requirej
ments,
technical
events
and
faults.
This
information
generally
documents
the
condij
tion
of
a
component,
a
module,
a
system
or
its
environment,
for
example:'xOperating
states
of
system
components, for
example,
fill
levels,
tyre
inflation
pressure,
battery
status.'xStatus
messages
of
the
vehicle
and
its
indij
vidual
components,
for
example
wheel
rotaj
tion
speed,
wheel
speed,
deceleration,
lateral acceleration,
fastened
seat
belt
indicator.'xMalfunctions
and
faults
of
important
systemcomponents,
for
example,
lights
and
brakes.'xInformation
on
vehicle-damaging
events.'xResponses
of
the
vehicle
to
particular
driving
situations,
for
example,
triggering
of
an

The
data
is
required
to
perform
the
control
dej vice
functions.
It
is
also
used
for
detecting

rectifying
malfunctions,

vehicle
manufacturer

optimise

The majority
of
this
data
is
transient
and
is
only
proj
cessed
within
the
vehicle
itself.
Only
a
small
proj
portion
of
the
data
is
stored
in
event
or
error
memories
and,
if
necessary,
in
the
vehicle
key.
Reading
out
data
When
service
work
is
being
carried
out,
for
exj ample
repairs,
service
operations,
warranty
work
and
quality
assurance
measures,
this
technical information
can
be
read
out
from
the
vehicle
toj
gether
with
the
vehicle
identification
number.
A
Service
Partner
of
the
manufacturer
or
another
qualified
Service
Partner
or
a
specialist
workshop
can
read
out
the
information.
The
legally
required
on-board
diagnostics
(OBD)
socket
in
the
vehicle
is
used
to
read
out
the
data.
The
data
is
collecj
ted,
processed
and
used
by
the
relevant
organij
sations
in
the
service
network.
The
data
docuj
ments
the
technical
conditions
of
the
vehicle,
helps
in
locating
faults
and
improving
quality,
and

is
transferred
to
the
vehicle
manufacturer,
if
necjessary.
Furthermore,
the
manufacturer
has
product
monitoring
obligations
to
meet
in
line
with

fulfil
these
obligations,
the

hicle
manufacturer
requires
technical
data
from
the
vehicle.
Error
and
event
memories
in
the
vej
hicle
can
be
reset
when
a
Service
Partner
of
the
manufacturer
or
another
qualified
Service
Partner
or
a
specialist
workshop
performs
repair
or
servj icing
work.
Data
on
service
work
carried
out
and
proof
of
maintenance
is
saved
in
the
vehicle
under
the
service
history
and
transferred
to
the
vehicle
manufacturer.
The
vehicle
owner
can
contact
a Service
Partner
of
the
manufacturer
to
object
to
the
data
being
saved
and
transferred
to
the
vehij cle
manufacturer.
This
objection
applies
for
as
long
as
the
vehicle
owner
remains
the
proprietor
of
the
vehicle.
Data
entry
and
data
transfer
into
the
vehicle
General Depending
on
the
equipment,
some
data
can
be
transferred
into
the
vehicle
when
using
comfort and
infotainment
functions,
for
example:'xMultimedia
data
such
as
music
or
films
forplayback
in
an
integrated
multimedia
system.'xAddress
book
data
for
use
in
conjunction

integrated
hands-free
system
or
anintegrated
navigation

data
may
be
saved
locally
in
the
vehicle

mobile
end
user
devices
Depending
on
the
equipment,
mobile
devicesconnected

Sound

images
from
the
mobile
end
user
device
can
be
played
back
and
displayed through
the
multimedia
system.
Certain
informajtion
is
transferred
to
the
mobile
device
at
the
same
time.
Depending
on
the
type
of
connecj
tion,
this
includes,
for
example
position
data
and
other
general
vehicle
information.
This
optimises
the
way
in
which
selected
apps,
for
example
navj
igation
or
music
playback,
work.
There
is
no
further
interaction
between
the
moj
bile
device
and
the
vehicle,
for
example
active
access
to
vehicle
data.
How
the
data
is
proj
cessed
further
is
determined
by
the
provider
of
the
particular
app
being
used.
The
range
of
setj
tings
depends
on
the
respective
app
and
the
opj erating
system
of
the
mobile
device.
Services
General If
the
vehicle
has
a
wireless
network
connection,
this
enables
data
to
be
exchanged
between
the vehicle
and
other
systems.
The
wireless
network
connection
is
established
via
an
in-vehicle
transj mitter
and
receiver
unit
or
via
personal
mobile
devices
brought
into
the
vehicle,
for
example
smartphones.
This
wireless
network
connection
enables
'online
functions'
to
be
used.
These
inj
clude
online
services
and
apps
supplied
by
the vehicle
manufacturer
or
by
other
providers.

Where
online
services
from
the
vehicle
manufacj
turer
are
concerned,
the
relevant
functions
are described
in
the
appropriate
place,
for
example
the
Owner's
Handbook

manufacturer's

site.
The
relevant
legal
information
pertaining
to
data
protection
is
also
provided.
Personal
data
may
be
used
to
perform
online
services.
Data
is
exchanged
over
a
secure
connection,
for
examj
ple
with
the
IT
systems
of
the
vehicle
manufacj
turer
intended
for
this
purpose.
Any
collection,
processing
and
use
of
personal
data
above
and beyond
that
needed
to
provide
the
services
must
always
be
based
on
legal
permission,
a
contracj
tual
arrangement
or
consent.
In
addition,
the
vehicle
manufacturer
evaluates
anonymised
information
on
transport
infrastrucj
ture
and
how
the
infotainment
system
is
used.
This
information
cannot
be
traced
back
to
indij
vidual
vehicles
or
people.
Evaluating
the
data
enj
ables
the
manufacturer
to
further
improve
its
products
or
services,
for
example
by
incorporatj
ing
the
most
up-to-date
traffic
information.
The
data
transfer
feature
can
be
deactivated
in
the
vehicle.
Certain
services
and
functions,
some
of
which
are
subject
to
a
charge,
can
be
deactivaj
ted
by
the
driver.
It
is
also
possible
to
activate
or
deactivate
the
data
connection
as
a
whole.
Exj
cluded
from
this
are
functions
and
services
which
are
required
by
law,
for
example
emerj
gency
call
systems.
Services
from
other
providers When
using
online
services
from
other
providers,these
services
are
the
responsibility
of
the
relejvant
provider
and
subject
to
their
data
privacyconditions

terms

The
vehicle
manujfacturer
has
no
control
over
the
content
exjchanged
when
using
these
services.
Informationon
the
way
in
which
personal
data
is
collectedand
used
in
relation
to
services
from
third
parties,the
scope
of
such
data

its

be
obtained
from
the
relevant
service
