The Digital Charging Service enables the time
window to be set automatically for certain locaj tions. Further information about the DigitalCharging Service is available on the Internet:

The vehicle can also start the charging process
before the selected time window begins or end it after the selected time window finishes. The
starting point of the charging process is adjusted
so the vehicle can be fully charged and, if applij
cable, its climate controlled right up to the deparj
ture time.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes can
be made via iDrive.
The set time window can be ignored for the next charging process: "Charge immediately once"
Setting the charge current for charging
via a Level 1 charging cable
Depending on the electrical mains, the vehicle
must be charged with a different charging curj rent strength, refer to page 210.

Settings are stored. When you change charging locations you also might need to change the setjting for charging.
Set the charge current strength at other housej hold sockets to the lowest level.
Setting the charge current for charging
via a Level 2 charging cable
Depending on the electrical mains, the vehicle
must be charged with a different charging curj
rent strength, refer to page 211.
When charging with a Level 2 charging cable, the
charging process can be completed faster at a
Level 2 charging station.

Automatically unlocking the charging
cable after the charging process
To allow other charging station customers to use
the charging function, the charging cable can be
unlocked automatically after the charging procj
ess is complete.

Stopping the charging process
The charging process can be stopped at anytime by removing the charging cable and continjued at a later time by connecting the chargingcable. This enables, for instance the use of other
loads on the power connection or prevents sij multaneous high power from multiple loads.

Continuing the charging process If the charging process is interrupted, for inj
stance through a temporary power failure, the

Intelligent charging
Concept
Intelligent charging can adapt the charging procj ess dynamically via the Internet to the environjmental condition, such as the availability of solarpower or time-variable electricity rates. Intelligent
charging is part of BMW's Digital Charging Servj
ice.

General information
No time for the end of charging is displayed in the instrument cluster for intelligent charging.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes can
be made via iDrive.

The charge state indicator light shows the
charge state of the high-voltage battery in the inj strument cluster, if standby state is switched on.
If all bars are filled, the high-voltage battery is
fully charged.
Even if no bars are filled, the high-voltage system is still under high voltage.
Information regarding the charging process are
shown on the charging screen.

Departure time
Concept
For optimum range and climate control, the dej parture time can be set before parking the vehij
cle.
General information
With a set departure time, the vehicle is pre-
heated or pre-cooled during the charging procj
ess if climate control is set. Climate control outj
put is reduced during the trip. This increases the
range.
The following settings are possible at departure time:'xClimate control at departure time.'xPlanning a one-time departure time.'xPlanning of up to three regular departure
times per day of the week.
If drive-ready state is switched off, changes can
be made via iDrive. Departure time can only be
changed once. Scheduled departure times are not adjusted. Settings for climate control andcharging process are also applied for scheduled
departure times.

Up to three departure times can be activated.
The set departure time will be deactivated, if the departure time was ignored three times in a row.
Climate control
General information
The following settings for climate control of the
vehicle are possible:
'xActivate stationary climate control immedij

With stationary climate control activated and
no charging cable connected, the range is rej
duced.'xPlanned climate control at the set departure
time, refer to page 179.
If a Mode 2 charging cable is used, the high-
voltage battery may not be fully charged at
departure time.
Discharged high-voltage and
vehicle battery
General information
In addition to the high-voltage battery, the vehij cle has a 12 volt vehicle battery, which is rej
quired for operation of the onboard electronics.
If the high-voltage battery and the vehicle batteryare discharged, it is not possible to operate thevehicle.
Have the vehicle checked and returned to operaj
tion by a dealerss service center or another qualij fied service center or repair shop.

RefuelingVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-spej
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selected
options or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
General information
Follow the fuel recommendation, refer to
page 224, prior to refueling.
A sufficient amount of fuel must be added to opj
erate the Range Extender. When the Range Exj
tender is activated, the current charge state is
maintained. The vehicle has a greater range.
Do not refuel unless the engine is at a standstill
and the selector lever is in position P/N, otherj
wise the buildup of pressure may cause the fuel
nozzle to shut off prematurely.
Safety information
NOTE
With a driving range of less than
30 miles/50 km the engine may no longer have
sufficient fuel. Engine functions are not enj
sured anymore. There is a risk of damage to
property. Refuel promptly.
Tank vent
Concept
The vehicle is equipped with a special fuel tank.
The fuel tank is designed for special requirej ments that arise from operation with the RangeExtender.
General information In the fuel tank, excess pressure can build updue to gasoline vapors which are dissipated bej
fore the fuel cap is opened.
Overview The button is located on the driver's floor area.
Tank venting
1.Switch off drive-ready state.2.
Press button to start the pressure
equalization.
The status of the tank venting is displayed in
the instrument cluster. In rare cases, the tank venting can last several minutes.
If the tank venting has been completed, a
message is displayed in the instrument clusj ter. The fuel filler flap is released for opening.
3.Open the fuel filler flap.
If it is not possible to open the fuel filler flap
after tank venting, press the button again.
If it is still not possible to open the fuel filler
flap even after the button has been pressed,
unlock the fuel filler flap manually, refer to

Fuel cap
Opening
Before opening, vent the tank.
1.Briefly press the rear edge of the fuel filler
flap.2.Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise.3.Place the fuel cap in the bracket attached to
the fuel filler flap.Closing
WARNING
The retaining strap of the fuel cap can be jamj
med and crushed during closing. The cap canj not be correctly closed. Fuel or fuel vapors canescape. There is a risk of injury or risk of damjage to property. Pay attention that the retaining
strap is not jammed or crushed when closing the cap.
1.Fit the cap and turn it clockwise until you
clearly hear a click.2.Close the fuel filler flap.
Manually unlocking fuel filler flap
E.g., in the event of an electrical malfunction. The release is located under the hood.

4.Carefully open the fuel cap. Excess pressure
can build up in the fuel tank from gasoline vaj
por.5.Fuel the vehicle as usual. The residue presj sure in the tank may make refueling difficult,
for instance the fuel pump nozzle may shut off frequently.
Follow the following when
refueling
General information
When refueling, insert the filler nozzle completely
into the filler pipe. Lifting up the fuel pump nozzle during refueling causes:
'xPremature switching off.'xReduced return of the fuel vapors.
The fuel tank is full when the filler nozzle clicks
off the first time.
Make sure that the fuel cap is closed properly afj ter refueling, otherwise the emissions warning
light may light up.
Follow safety regulations posted at the gas staj
tion.
Safety information
WARNING
If a sufficient safety distance from easily flamj mable materials is not maintained, simultanej ous charging and filling with fuel can cause a
risk of fire. There is a risk of injury or risk of
damage to property. Do not fill the vehicle with fuel and charge it simultaneously.
NOTE
Fuels are toxic and aggressive. Overfilling of the fuel tank can damage the fuel system. Painted
surfaces may be damaged by contact with fuel. Escaping fuel can harm the environment. There
is a risk of damage to property. Avoid overfilling.

Fuel recommendation
General information
Depending on the region, many gas stations sell
fuel that has been customized to winter or summer conditions. Fuel that is available in winjter, for instance helps make a cold start easier.
Gasoline General information
For the best fuel efficiency, the gasoline should be sulfur-free or very low in sulfur content.
Fuels that are marked on the gas pump as conj
taining metal must not be used.
Fuels with a maximum ethanol content of 10 %,
i. e., E10, may be used for refueling.
Ethanol should meet the following quality stanj dards:
US: ASTM 4806mxx
CAN: CGSB-3.511mxx
xx: comply with the current standard in each
case.
Safety information
NOTE
Do not press the Start/Stop button after refuelj
ing with the wrong fuel. Furthermore, the cataj lytic converter is permanently damaged. There
is a risk of damage to property. Do not refuel or add the following in the case of gasoline enj
gines:
'xLeaded gasoline.'xMetallic additives, for instance manganese
or iron.
Do not press the Start/Stop button after refuelj
ing with the wrong fuel. Contact a dealerss servj ice center or another qualified service center or
repair shop.
NOTE
Incorrect fuels can damage the fuel system and the engine. There is a risk of damage to propjerty. Do not use fuels with a higher percentageof ethanol than recommended. Do not refuelwith fuels containing methanol, e.g. M5 toM100.
NOTE
Fuel that does not comply with the minimum quality can compromise engine function or
cause engine damage. There is a risk of damj
age to property. Do not fill with fuel that does
not comply with the minimum quality.
Recommended fuel grade
BMW recommends AKI 91.
