LightsVehicle features and options
This chapter describes all standard, country-spej
cific and optional features offered with the series.
It also describes features that are not necessarily
available in your vehicle, e. g., due to the selected
options or country versions. This also applies to
safety-related functions and systems. When usj
ing these functions and systems, the applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Overview
Switches in the vehicle
The light switch element is located next to the
steering wheel.

Parking lights, low beams and

General information
Position of switch:

If the driver's door is opened when standby state
is switched off, the exterior lighting is automatij cally switched off.
Parking lights Position of switch:

The vehicle is illuminated on all sides.
Do not use the parking lights for extended perij
ods; otherwise, they might drain the battery and it would then be impossible to switch on drive-ready state.
When parking, switch on the one-sided roadside
parking light, refer to page 129.
Low beams
Position of switch:

The low beams illuminate when standby state is switched on.
Roadside parking light
Concept
The vehicle can be illuminated on one side.

Switching on
With standby state switched off, press the levereither up or down past the resistance point for
approx. 2 seconds.
Switching offBriefly press the lever to the resistance point inthe opposite direction.

Welcome lights
General information
Depending on the vehicle equipment and the
ambient brightness, individual light functions may
be switched on briefly when the vehicle is unj locked.

Headlight courtesy delay feature
General information
The low beams stay lit for a short while if the
headlight flasher is switched on after the radio-
ready state is switched off.

Automatic headlight control
Concept
The low beams are switched on and off automatj ically depending on the ambient brightness, for
instance in tunnels, in twilight or if there is prej
cipitation.
General information
A blue sky with the sun low on the horizon can cause the lights to be switched on.

The indicator light in the instrument cluster is ilj
luminated when the low beams are switched on.
System limits
The automatic headlight control cannot serve as
a substitute for your personal judgment of lightj
ing conditions.

For example, the sensors are unable to detect
fog or hazy weather. To avoid safety risks under these conditions, you should always switch on
the lights manually.
Daytime running lights
General information
Position of switch:

The daytime running lights light up when
standby state is switched on. After standby state
is switched off, the parking lights light up in posij tion

Activating/deactivating In some countries, daytime running lights are
mandatory, so it may not be possible to deactij vate the daytime running lights.

Adaptive headlight range control
The adaptive headlight range control compenjsates for acceleration and braking operations in
order not to blind the oncoming traffic and to achieve optimum illumination of the roadway.
Instrument lighting
Functional requirement The parking lights or low beams must be switched on to adjust the brightness.
Settings
Adjust the brightness with thethumbwheel.
Interior lights
General information Depending on the equipment, the interior lights,footwell lights, entry lights, and courtesy lights
are controlled automatically.
Thumbwheel for the instrument lighting controls brightness of some of these features.

Ambient light
General information
Depending on the equipment version, lighting
can be adjusted for some lights in the car's intej
rior.
Selecting color scheme
Via iDrive:1."My Vehicle"2."Vehicle settings"3."Lighting"4."Interior lighting"5."Ambient lighting"6.Select the desired setting.
To deactivate the ambient light: "Off".
With a color scheme selected and welcome lights activated they illuminate in blue when vehij
cle is unlocked.
Setting the brightness Depending on the equipment, the brightness ofthe ambient light can be adjusted via the thumbj
wheel for the instrument lighting or on the Conj
trol Display.

Airbags

Front airbags help protect the driver and the
front passenger by responding to frontal impacts in which safety belts alone would not provide adjequate protection.Side airbag
In a lateral impact, the side airbag supports the
side of the body in the chest and lap area.
Head airbag

Ejection Mitigation
The head airbag system is designed as an ejecj
tion mitigation countermeasure to reduce the
likelihood of ejections of vehicle occupants
through side windows during rollovers or side imj pact events.
Knee airbagThe knee airbag supports the legs in a frontal imj
pact.
Protective action
Airbags are not triggered in every impact situaj
tion, for instance in less severe accidents or rear-
end collisions.
Information on optimum effect of the
airbags
WARNING
If the seat position is incorrect or the deployj
ment area of the airbags is impaired, the airbag
system cannot provide protection as intended
and may cause additional injuries due to trigj gering. There is a risk of injuries or danger tolife. Follow the information on achieving the opj
timum protective effect of the airbag system.
'xKeep a distance from the airbags.'xAlways grasp the steering wheel on the
steering wheel rim. Hold your hands at the
3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions, to keep the risk of injury to your hands or arms as low as
possible when the airbag is triggered.'xMake sure that occupants keep their heads
away from the side airbag.'xMake sure that the front passenger is sitting
correctly, i.e., keeps his or her feet and legs in the floor area and does not support them on
the dashboard.'xThere should be no additional persons, anij
mals or objects between an airbag and a perj
son.'xDashboard and windshield on the front pasj
senger side must stay clear - do not attach adhesive labels or coverings and do not atj
tach brackets or cables, for instance for GPS
devices or mobile phones.'xDo not apply adhesive materials to the airbag cover panels, do not cover them or modify
them in any way.'xDo not use the cover of the front airbag on the front passenger side as a storage area.'xDo not place slip covers, seat cushions or
other objects on the front passenger seat that are not specifically suited for seats with
integrated side airbags.'xDo not hang pieces of clothing, such as jackj
ets, over the backrests.'xNever modify either the individual compoj nents or the wiring in the airbag system. This
also applies to steering wheel covers, the
dashboard, and the seats.'xDo not remove the airbag system.
Even when you follow all instructions very
closely, injury from contact with the airbags canj
not be fully ruled out in certain situations.
The ignition and inflation noise may lead to short-term and, in most cases, temporary hearj
ing impairment in sensitive occupants.

Functional readiness of the airbag
system
Safety information
WARNING
Individual components can be hot after triggerj ing of the airbag system. There is a risk of inj
jury. Do not touch individual components.

WARNING
Improperly executed work can lead to failure,
malfunction or unintentional triggering of the airbag system. In the case of a malfunction, the
airbag system might not trigger as intended dej spite the accident severity. There is a risk of injjuries or danger to life. Have the airbag system
checked, repaired, dismantled and scrapped by
a dealerss service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.
Correct function
With the standby state switched on, the
warning light in the instrument cluster
lights up briefly, indicating the airbag sysj
tem and belt tensioner are functional.
Airbag system malfunctioning
'xWarning light does not come on when
standby state is switched on.'xThe warning light lights up continuously.
Automatic deactivation of the front-
seat passenger airbags
Concept
The system reads if the front passenger seat is occupied by measuring the human body's resistjance.
Front, knee, and side airbag on the front pasj senger's side are activated or deactivated.
General information
Before transporting a child on the front passenj
ger seat, refer to the safety information and inj structions for children on the front passengerseat, see Children.
Safety information
WARNING
To ensure the front-seat passenger airbag
function, the system must be able to detect whether a person is sitting in the front passenjger seat. The entire seat cushion area must beused for this purpose. There is a risk of injuriesor danger to life. Make sure that the front pasjsenger keeps his or her feet in the floor area.
Malfunction of the automatic deactivation
system
When transporting older children and adults, the
front-seat passenger airbags may be deactivated in certain sitting positions. In this case, the indij
cator light for the front-seat passenger airbags
lights up.
In this case, change the sitting position so that
the front-seat passenger airbags are activated
and the indicator light goes out.
If it is not possible to activate the airbags, have
the person sit in the rear.
To enable correct recognition of the occupied
seat cushion.
'xDo not attach covers, cushions, ball mats or
other items to the front passenger seat unj less they are specifically determined to besafe for use on the front passenger seat.'xDo not place any electronic devices on the
front passenger seat if a child restraint sysj

Indicator light for the front-seat
passenger airbags
The indicator light for the front-seat passenger
airbags indicates the operating state of the front- seat passenger airbags.
The light indicates whether the airbags are either
activated or deactivated.
'xThe indicator light lights up
when a child is properly
seated in a child restraint sysj
tem or when the seat is
empty. The airbags on the
front passenger side are not
activated.'xThe indicator light does not light up when, for
instance a correctly seated person of suffij cient size is detected on the seat. The airj
bags on the front passenger side are actij vated.
Detected child restraint systems
The system generally detects children seated ina child restraint system, particularly in child rejstraint systems required by NHTSA at the point
in time when the vehicle was manufactured. Afj
ter installing a child restraint system, make sure that the indicator light for the front-seat passenj
ger airbags lights up. This indicates that the child restraint system has been detected and thefront-seat passenger airbags are not activated.
Strength of the driver's and front-seat
passenger airbag
The explosive power that activates driver's/front- seat passenger airbags very much depends on
the positions of the driver's/front passenger seat.
To maintain the accuracy of this function over
the long term, calibrate the front seats as soon as
a respective message appears on the Control Display.
Calibrating the front seats
WARNING
There is a risk of jamming when moving the seats. There is a risk of injury or risk of damage
to property. Make sure that the area of movej
ment of the seat is clear prior to any adjustj
ment.
A corresponding message appears on the Conj
trol Display.
1.Press the switch and move the respective
seat all the way forward, until it stops.2.Press the switch forward again. The seat still
moves forward slightly.3.Readjust the seat to the desired position.
The calibration procedure is completed when the message on the Control Display disappears.
If the message continues to be displayed, repeat
the calibration.
If the message does not disappear after a repeat calibration, have the system checked as soon as
possible.
Tire Pressure Monitor TPM
Concept
The system monitors tire inflation pressure in the four mounted tires. The system warns you if
there is a significant loss of pressure in one or
more tires.
