Due to limitations in the radar sensor,braking may occur unexpectedly or not at all.
Adaptive Cruise Control can follow another vehi-cle from a standstill up to 125 mph (200 km/h).Always observe posted speed limits.
The driver can also toggle between ACC andCruise Control (CC) – see the article "Switchingbetween Cruise Control and Adaptive CruiseControl".

•Adaptive Cruise Control cannot cover alldriving situations and traffic, weather androad conditions.
•This system is designed to be a supple-mentary driving aid. It is not, however,intended to replace the driver's attentionand judgement. The driver is responsiblefor maintaining a safe distance and speedand must intervene if Adaptive CruiseControl does not maintain a suitablespeed or suitable distance to the vehicleahead.
•Maintenance of ACC components mayonly be performed by a trained and quali-fied Volvo technician.
Overview
The distance to the vehicle ahead (in the samelane) is monitored by a radar sensor. Your vehi-cle's speed is regulated by accelerating andbraking. The brakes may emit a sound when theyare being modulated by the adaptive cruise con-trol system. This is normal.
WARNING
•Adaptive Cruise Control is not a collisionavoidance system. The driver is alwaysresponsible for applying the brakes if thesystem does not detect another vehicle.
•Adaptive Cruise Control does not react topeople or animals, or small vehicles suchas bicycles and motorcycles. It also doesnot react to slow moving, parked orapproaching vehicles, or stationaryobjects.
•Do not use Adaptive Cruise Control indemanding driving conditions such as citydriving or other heavy traffic situations, inslippery conditions, when there is a greatdeal of water or slush on the road, duringheavy rain or snow, in poor visibility, onwinding roads or on highway on- or off-ramps.

Activating ACC (putting it in active
mode and setting a speed)
Before ACC can be put in active mode:
•The driver's seat belt must be buckled andthe driver's door must be closed.
•There must be a vehicle ahead (a target vehi-cle) within a reasonable distance or yourvehicle's current speed must be at least9 mph (15 km/h).
–With the symbol displayed (ACC is in
standby mode), press the button (1) onthe left-side steering wheel keypad.
>This puts ACC in active mode and setsthe vehicle's current speed, which is indi-cated by digits in the center of the speed-ometer.
The time interval to the vehi-cle ahead will only be shownwhen two vehicles are dis-played.
A speed interval will also beindicated:
•The higher speed is the one set in ACC
•The lower one is the speed of the vehicleahead (the target vehicle).

Deactivating/resuming AdaptiveCruise Control (ACC)
ACC can be put temporarily in standby modeand then reactivated.

To temporarily deactivate and put Adaptive CruiseControl in standby mode:

If the camera and radar sensor cannot detect thelane's side marker lines or a vehicle ahead, PilotAssist goes into standby mode.
When Pilot Assist is in standby mode and yourvehicle comes too close to the vehicle ahead, thedriver will be alerted by the Distance Alert func-tion.

Pilot Assist is designed to regulate speedsmoothly but in situations calling for fast braking,the driver must apply the brakes. This applies tosituations where there are considerable differen-ces in speed or if the vehicle ahead brakes sud-denly. Due to the limitations of the camera andradar sensor, the system may apply the brakes inyour vehicle suddenly or not at all.
•The default speed for Pilot Assist is preset toapprox. 30 mph (50 km/h) and cannot bechanged. If the vehicle ahead increasesspeed to over 30 mph (50 km/h) and pullsaway from your vehicle, Pilot Assist will gointo standby mode.
NOTE
•Pilot Assist maintenance should only becarried out by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
•Pilot Assist regulates your vehicle'sspeed using the accelerator pedal andthe brakes. Please be aware that theremay be a faint sound from the brakeswhen the system is using them.

Prerequisites
The prerequisites for activating Pilot Assist are:
•The vehicle ahead must be within a reasona-ble (detectable) distance
•The camera must be able to clearly detectthe traffic lane's side marker lines
•The vehicle's speed must be under approx.30 mph (50 km/h).
A WHITE symbol indicates thatPilot Assist has been selected.
In other cases, the WHITEarrow pointing to the right indi-cates that the system is availa-ble.
A YELLOW symbol with a flashing WHITE arrowindicates that the system is about to shift intostandby mode.
With ACC in standby mode:
1.Tap ▶ (6).
>The symbol will be displayed and PilotAssist will go into standby mode.
2.Press the button (2) on the left-sidesteering wheel keypad.

•The camera or radar sensor may not beable to detect objects if there are pot-holes or if there are stationary objectspartially or completely blocking the road.
•Pilot Assist does not "see" pedestrians,animals, etc.
•Pilot Assist's steering capacity is limitedand may not always be able to help thedriver keep the vehicle in the lane.
Hands on the steering wheel
Pilot Assist only functions when the driver'shands are on the steering wheel, which is con-tinuously monitored by the system. If this is notthe case, the driver will be alerted by a text mes-sage in the instrument panel. If the driver's handsare not returned to the steering wheel, an audiblesignal will sound.
If the driver does not return his/her hands to thesteering wheel after the audible signal, PilotAssist will go into standby mode and must be
reactivated by pressing .

Pilot Assist-1 limitations
Pilot Assist functionality may be limited in certainsituations.
Pilot Assist is designed to help the driver in anumber of situations. However, the driver alwayshas the primary responsibility for maintaining asafe distance to other vehicles and for keepingthe vehicle in its proper traffic lane.

Do not use Pilot Assist when the vehicle is trans-porting a heavy load or if it is towing a trailer.

•Pilot Assist can follow another vehicle from astandstill up to a speed of approx. 125 mph(200 km/h)
•Pilot Assist can provide steering assistancefrom very low speeds up to approx. 87 mph(140 km/h).
Never exceed posted speed limits.

Setting a Pilot Assist-2 time interval
Different time intervals to the vehicle ahead canbe selected and are shown in the instrumentpanel as 1–5 horizontal bars.
Changing the time interval
The greater the number of bars,the longer the time interval.One bar between the vehiclesrepresents a time interval ofapproximately 1 second; 5 barsis approximately 3 seconds.
NOTE
When the graphic in the instrument panelshows a vehicle and a steering wheel, PilotAssist is following a vehicle ahead using theset time interval.
If only a steering wheel is displayed, there isno vehicle ahead within a reasonable dis-tance.
