Braking effect after a collision
In certain types of collisions, the vehicle's brakesare applied to help prevent or mitigate a secon-dary collision.
Maintaining control of the vehicle after a collisionmay be difficult. To help avoid or mitigate theeffect of a secondary collision, the brakes areapplied automatically to help bring the vehicle toa stop.
The brake lights and hazard warning flashers willbe activated and the flashers will remain on afterthe vehicle has come to a standstill. The parkingbrake will then be applied automatically.
In a situation where stopping the vehicle may notbe desirable, the driver can override this systemby pressing the accelerator pedal.
This feature can only function if the brake systemis intact after the collision.

Emergency brake lights
The emergency brake lights activate in the eventof hard braking/rapid deceleration at most nor-mal driving speeds or if the ABS system is acti-vated. This function causes an additional taillighton each side of the vehicle to illuminate to helpalert vehicles traveling behind.
Once the emergency brake lights have been acti-vated, if the driver releases the brake pedal, thebrake lights will return to their normal function.

Hill Descent Control (HDC)
HDC is a type of low-speed automatic enginebrake and makes it possible to increase ordecrease the vehicle's speed on steep downhillgradients using only the accelerator pedal, with-out applying the brakes.
HDC is integrated into the Off Road drivemode.
HDC is particularly useful when driving downsteep hills with rough surfaces, and where theroad may have slippery patches.
WARNING
HDC does not function in all situations, and isa supplementary braking aid. The driver hasfull responsibility for driving in a safe manner.
Function
HDC allows the vehicle to roll forward or inreverse at very low speed with enhanced enginebraking. However, speed can be adjusted withthe accelerator pedal. When the acceleratorpedal is released, the vehicle will return to verylow speed.
The driver can use the brakes to slow or stop thevehicle at any time.
HDC is activated along with Low Speed Control(LSC), which together make driving on slipperysurfaces at low speeds easier.

When HDC and LSC are activated, this changesthe response from the accelerator pedal andengine.
Activating HDC
This function can be activated in different ways,depending on how the vehicle is equipped.
Using the drive mode control *
Select the Off Road drive mode to activate thefunction.
Select a different drive mode to turn HDC off. Ifthis is done while the vehicle is on a steep down-grade, engine braking will decrease gradually.
From the center display's Function view
Models without the drive modecontrol have a button for HillDescent Control in the centerdisplay's Function view.
•Tap the button to activate. A light in the but-ton illuminates when the function is acti-vated.
NOTE
The function is deactivated when driving athigher speeds and must be reactivated atlower speeds if so desired.

Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist (HSA) helps prevent the vehiclefrom rolling backwards when starting up a hill. Ifyou are backing up a hill, HSA helps prevent thevehicle from rolling forward.
HSA makes it easier to start or back up on a hillby retaining pressure on the brake pedal for sev-eral seconds after the pedal has been released inorder to keep the vehicle at a standstill.
The brakes will be released after several secondsor when the driver presses the accelerator pedal.
HSA is available even if the Auto-hold brakingfunction is turned off.

Preconditioning
•If possible, precondition the vehicle with thecharging cable before driving.
•Avoid parking the vehicle so that the passen-ger compartment becomes too hot or cold.Park, if possible, in a climate controlled park-ing garage.
•For short drives after using the precondition-ing function, turn off the climate systemblower if possible.
•If preconditioning is not possible in coldweather, use the seat and steering wheelheating primarily. Avoid heating the entirepassenger compartment, which reduces thehybrid battery's charge level.
Driving
•Choose the Pure drive mode to help mini-mize electric power consumption.
•Maintain a constant speed and an adequatedistance to the vehicle ahead to minimizeuse of the brakes.
•Brake as gently as possible; doing socharges the hybrid battery using the inte-grated regenerative braking function.
•Balance energy requirements using theaccelerator pedal and utilize the gauge onthe instrument panel to see the amount ofpower available from the electric motor. Thishelps avoid starting the gasoline engineunnecessarily. The electric motor is more
energy-efficient than the gasoline engine,especially at lower speeds.
•In hilly terrain, put the gear selector in modeB to utilize the electric motor's braking func-tion when the accelerator pedal is released.This helps charge the hybrid battery.
•Higher speeds increase energy consumptionand the vehicle's wind resistance increasesalong with speed. Do not exceed postedspeed limits.
•Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extra load)in the vehicle.
•Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when the tires are cold).
•Remove snow tires when threat of snow orice has ended.
•Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc, increaseair resistance and also energy consumption.
•Avoid driving with open windows.
Handling and roadholding
•Vehicle load, tire design and inflation pres-sure all affect vehicle handling. Therefore,check that the tires are inflated to the rec-ommended pressure according to the vehicleload. Loads should be distributed so thatcapacity weight or maximum permissible axleloads are not exceeded.
•At the specified curb weight your vehicle hasa tendency to understeer, which means thatthe steering wheel has to be turned more
than might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stabilityand reduces the risk of rear wheel skid.Remember that these properties can alterwith the vehicle load. The heavier the load inthe cargo compartment, the less the ten-dency to understeer.

How TSA works
Once swaying has begun, it can be very difficultto stop, which makes it difficult to control thevehicle and trailer.
The TSA system continuously monitors the vehi-cle's movements, particularly lateral movement. Ifthe system detects a tendency to sway, thebrakes are applied individually on the frontwheels, which has a stabilizing effect on the vehi-cle and trailer. This is often enough to enable thedriver to regain control of the vehicle.
If this is not adequate to stop the swaying motion,the brakes are applied to all of the wheels on thevehicle and on the trailer if it is equipped withbrakes, and engine power is temporarily reduced.As the swaying motion begins to decrease andthe vehicle-trailer have once again become sta-ble, TSA will now stop regulating the brakes/engine power and the driver regains control ofthe vehicle.
TSA is deactivated if the driver deactivates ESCin the center display's menu system.
When the ESC symbol in theinstrument panel flashes, TSAis active.

Ignition modes
The vehicle's ignition can be put in variousmodes (levels) to make different functions availa-ble.
The vehicle's ignition has 3 modes: 0, I, and IIthat can be used to operate various functionswithout starting the engine. The following tableshows examples of which functions are availablein the respective modes.

Battery drain
Your vehicle's electrical functions drain the bat-tery to varying extents.
Avoid using ignition mode II as much as posssi-ble, or electrical functions that require a greatdeal of electrical current when the engine is notrunning.
Using ignition mode I whenever possible con-sumes less electrical current.
Functions that require a great deal of electricalcurrent include:
•the climate system blower
•headlights
•wipers
•infotainment system (especially at high vol-ume).
If the battery's charge level is low, a text messagewill appear in the instrument panel. The vehicle'senergy-saving function will then turn off orreduce certain functions that are currently con-suming electrical current.
If the battery needs to be recharged, start theengine and let it idle for at least 15 minutes ordrive the vehicle (driving charges the batteryfaster than letting the engine idle).

Starting the engine
The engine can be started using the start knobon the tunnel console if there is a remote key inthe passenger compartment.

WARNING
Before starting the engine:
•Fasten the seat belt.
•Check that the seat, steering wheel andmirrors are adjusted properly.
•Make sure the brake pedal can bedepressed completely. Adjust the seat ifnecessary.
To start the engine.
1.A remote key must be in the passenger com-partment. On models with the standardPassive Start, the key has to be in the frontsection of the passenger compartment. If thevehicle is equipped the optional PassiveEntry system (keyless locking/unlocking) thekey can be anywhere in the vehicle.
2.Press firmly on the brake pedal2.
3.Turn the start knob toward START andrelease it to start the engine.
> The starter motor will crank until theengine starts or its overheating protectionis triggered.

Maintaining/increasing the hybridbattery's charge while driving
In certain situations, it can be useful to controlthe hybrid battery's charge level while the vehicleis being driven. The hybrid battery functionsHold and Charge while driving are available inall drive modes.
The "Hold" and "Charge" function
buttons
These functions are activated from the centerdisplay's Function view.
Hold
Battery level sustained forlater use.
This function saves the hybridbattery's charge for use at alater time such as when drivingin an urban area or residentialneighborhood. Hold is available regardless of thehybrid battery's charge level.
The vehicle will function as in normal hybrid driv-ing and will use energy from e.g., regenerativebraking to support the gasoline engine.
Charge
Engine charges hybridbattery.
This function is only available when the hybridbattery's charge level is low and can recharge thebattery up to 33%, after which the Hold functionwill be activated automatically.
Symbol in the instrument panel
The symbol will appear in the instrumentpanel when either of these functions is activated.See also the article "Hybrid-related symbols andmessages" for additional information.

Drive modes
Selecting a drive mode affects the vehicle's driv-ing characteristics to help make driving moreenjoyable or easier in certain types of situations.
The following systems are adapted to help pro-vide the best vehicle performance in the respec-tive drive modes:
•Steering
•Engine/transmission/All Wheel Drive*
•Brakes
•Suspension control
•Instrument panel
•Climate system settings
Select the drive mode best suited to the currentdriving conditions.
Please be aware that not all modes can beselected in all driving situations. The selectedmode will be displayed in the instrument panel.

Selecting a drive mode
1.Press the DRIVE MODE control in the tun-nel console.
>A pop-up menu will open in the centerdisplay.
2. Roll the control upward or downward to scrollto the desired drive mode.
A drive mode can also be selected by tap-ping its button on the center display.
3. Press the control again to select it.
When a driving mode cannot be selected, one ofthe following messages may be displayed:
•Not possible to select due to gear inmanual
•Not possible to select due to low battery
•Not possible to select due to lowtemperature
•Not possible to select due to limitations
•Not possible to select due to highspeed.
Available drive modes
HYBRID
This is the default mode.
The vehicle normally starts in Hybrid mode 4. Theengine management system uses both the elec-tric motor and gasoline engine (separately or intandem) and calculates the optimal levels of per-formance, fuel consumption and comfort. Athigher speeds, ground clearance is reducedautomatically to help reduce wind resistance.
The amount of driving done using only the elec-tric motor in Hybrid mode is determined by thehybrid battery's charge level and the need forheating/cooling in the passenger compartment.
If sufficient electrical energy is available, only theelectric motor will be activated when the driverpresses the accelerator pedal up to a certainlevel. Above this level, the gasoline engine willstart.
The instrument panel gauge when both the electricmotor and gasoline engine are being used
The long needle in the gauge indicates theamount of energy that the vehicle is currentlyusing. The short white line between the "light-ning" and "oil drop" symbols indicates theamount of energy available. The gasoline engine starts when the responserequired when the driver presses the acceleratorpedal cannot be provided by the electric motoralone.
The gauge also indicates when the battery isbeing recharged (regenerated) during light brak-ing. See the article "Brakes" for additional infor-mation.
