During the running-in period for the first 1,000 km (620 miles), it is advisable to drive your new vehicle using the following precautions as a guideline to aid long life as well as future economy and performance.
l Do not race the engine at high speeds.
l Avoid rapid starting, accelerating, braking and prolonged high-speed running.
l Keep to the running-in speed limit shown below.
Please note that the legal speed limits must be adhered to.

To apply the parking brake
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,then pull the lever up without pushing
the button at the end of hand grip.
CAUTIONl When you intend to apply the parking brake,
firmly press the brake pedal to bring the ve-hicle to a complete stop before pulling theparking brake lever. Pulling the parking brake lever with the vehicle moving could
make the rear wheels lock up, thereby mak- ing the vehicle unstable. It could also make
the parking brake malfunction.NOTEl Apply sufficient force to the parking brake
lever to hold the vehicle stationary after the foot brake is released.NOTEl If the parking brake does not hold the vehi-
cle stationary after the foot brake is released,
have your vehicle checked immediately.
To release the parking brake
1- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal,
then pull the lever up slightly.
2- Push the button at the end of hand grip.
3- Lower the lever fully.
CAUTIONl Before driving, be sure that the parking
brake is fully released and brake warning
lamp is off.
If a vehicle is driven without releasing the
parking brake, the brake will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible
brake failure.CAUTIONl If the brake warning lamp does not extin-
guish when the parking brake is fully re- leased, the brake system may be abnormal.
Have your vehicle checked immediately.

Parking on a hill
To prevent the vehicle from rolling, followthese procedures:
Parking on a downhill slope
Turn the front wheels towards the kerb andmove the vehicle forward until the kerb side wheel gently touches the kerb.
Apply the parking brake and place the selec- tor lever into the “P” (PARK) position.
If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.
Parking on an uphill slope
Turn the front wheels away from the kerb and move the vehicle back until the kerb side
wheel gently touches the kerb.

WARNINGlYour vehicle is equipped with convex type
mirrors. Please take into consideration,that objects you see in the mirror will looksmaller and farther away compared to a normal flat mirror.
Do not use this mirror to estimate dis- tance of following vehicles when changing
lanes.
1. Place the lever (A) to the same side as
the mirror whose adjustment is desired.
L- Left outside mirror adjustment

2. Press the switch (B) to the left, right, up

The outside mirrors can be folded in towards the side window to prevent damage whenparking in narrow areas.
CAUTIONl Do not drive the vehicle with the mirror fol-
ded in. The lack of rearward visibility nor-mally provided the mirror could lead to an
accident.
Retracting and extending the
mirrors using the mirror re- tractor switch
With the ignition switch in the “ON” or
“ACC” position, push the mirror retractor switch to retract the mirrors. Push it again to
extend the mirrors to their original positions.
After placing the ignition switch in the “LOCK” position, it is possible to retract and
extend the mirrors using the mirror retractor switch for about 30 seconds.CAUTIONl It is possible to retract and extend the mir-
rors by hand. After retracting a mirror using
the mirror retractor switch, however, you should extend it by using the switch again,
not by hand. If you extended the mirror by
hand after retracting it using the switch, it would not properly lock in position. As a re-
sult, it could move because of the wind or
vibration while you are driving, taking away your rearward visibility.

Towing
If towing is necessary, we recommend you tohave it done by your MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point or a
commercial tow truck service.
In the following cases, transport the vehicle
using a tow truck.
l The engine runs but the vehicle does not
move or abnormal noise is produced.
l Inspection of the vehicle’s underside re-
veals that oil or some other fluid is leak- ing.
Only when you cannot receive a towing serv- ice from a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point or commercial tow truck service, tow your vehicle carefully in accord-
ance with the instructions given in “Towing”
on page 8-16.
CAUTIONl Be sure to shift the transfer shift lever to the
“2H” position. Never try to tow with the transfer shift lever in the “4H”, “4HLc” or
“4LLc” positions and with any of the wheels
on the ground (Type A or B). This could re- sult in damage to the vehicle’s driving sys- tem, or the vehicle could become separated from the tow truck and unexpected accident
might result.
If you cannot shift the transfer shift lever to “2H” position or the transmission is mal-
functioning or damaged, transport the vehi- cle with all the wheels on a carriage (Type C
or D) as illustrated.If you can shift the transfer shift lever to the “2H” position.If you cannot shift the transfer shift lever to the “2H”
position.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive ve-
hicle
WARNINGl Do not crank the engine while jacking up
the vehicle.
The tyre on the ground may turn and the
vehicle may roll off the jack.

CAUTIONlIf the vehicle is towed with the ignition
switch in the “ON” position and only the
front wheels or only the rear wheels raised off the ground, the active traction control
function may operate, resulting in an acci-
dent. When towing the vehicle with the front wheels raised, keep the ignition switch in the
“LOCK” or “ACC” position. When towing the vehicle with the rear wheels raised, keep the ignition switch in the “ACC” position.

Cruise control is an automatic speed controlsystem that keeps a set speed. It can be acti-vated at about 40 km/h (25 mph) or more.
CAUTIONl When you do not wish to drive at a set
speed, turn off the cruise control for safety.
l Do not use cruise control when driving con-
ditions will not allow you to stay at the same
speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roads that are winding, icy, snow-covered, wet,
slippery, on a steep downhill slope.NOTEl Cruise control may not be able to keep your
speed on uphills or downhills.
l Your speed may decrease on a steep uphill.
You may use the accelerator pedal if you
want to stay at your set speed.
l Your speed may increase to more than the
set speed on a steep downhill. You must use the brake to control your speed. As a result, the set speed driving is deactivated.Cruise control switches
A- “ON OFF” switch
Used to turn on and off the cruise control.
B- “COAST SET” switch
Used to reduce the set speed and to set the
desired speed.
C- “ACC RES” switch
Used to increase the set speed and to re- turn to the original set speed.

CAUTIONlThe reversing sensor system assists you in
determining the approximate distance be-
tween the vehicle and an obstacle located behind the vehicle. It has limitations in terms
of detectable areas and objects, and may not
properly detect some objects. Therefore, do
not place excessive confidence in the revers- ing sensor system and operate the vehicle ascarefully as you would do with a vehicle not equipped with this system.
l Make sure to check the surroundings with
your own eyes to ensure safety. Do not oper-
ate the vehicle by relying on the reversing sensor system alone.Corner and back sensor loca-

There are two corner sensors (A) at the cor- ners of the rear bumper, and two back sensors
(B) in the spare wheel garnish.
Obstacle detection areas

The detection areas of the corner and back
sensors are limited to those shown in the il-
lustration. Because the back sensors are built in the overhanging area of the vehicle (spare
wheel garnish), the sensors are unable to de- tect low or thin obstacles, or obstacles on the
bottom of the spare wheel garnish or the bot-
tom of the centre of the rear bumper. Thus, make sure to check the surroundings as you
operate the vehicle in a safe manner.
Reversing sensor system detec- tion areas
Depending on whether the vehicle is equip-ped with a towing bar, you can change the re-
versing sensor system between the standard
mode and the towing bar mode. The towing
bar mode changes the system to exclude the area in which the towing bar is mounted from the detection areas.
Vehicles without a towing bar
The detection areas are within approximately
50 cm (A) from the corner sensors, 150 cm
(B) from the back sensors.
Vehicles with a towing bar
The detection areas are within approximately 50 cm (A) from the corner sensors, 150 cm
(B) from the back sensors. The non-detection areas (C) are within approximately 20 cm (D)
from the bumper.

It will flash in case there is a malfunction in
the system. For details, refer to “SONAR
OFF indication lamp” on page 6-56.
To return the system to the operating state, push the “SONAR” switch again. When the
system returns to the operating state, the buz- zer sounds once and the “SONAR OFF” indi-
cation lamp turns off.
NOTEl The “SONAR OFF” indication lamp flashes
once when the ignition switch is turned to
the “ON” position.
The warning buzzer sounds when the system
detects an obstacle during operation.
NOTEl After pushing the “SONAR” switch, revers-
ing sensor system operation differs accord-ing to the detection area setting.
• Setting when towing bar is not equipped
When the selector lever is moved to the
“R” (REVERSE) position, the reversing sensor system will operate even if the cor-
ner sensor operation was stopped by push-
ing the “SONAR” switch.
• Setting when towing bar is equipped
When reversing sensor system operation was stopped by pushing the “SONAR”
switch, the reversing sensor system will not operate until the engine has been stop- ped even if the selector lever is moved to
the “R” (REVERSE) position.
To resume reversing sensor system opera- tion, push the “SONAR” switch or stop and restart the engine, and then move the
gearshift lever or selector lever to the “R” position.
Warning for obstacles
If there is an obstacle behind the vehicle, a
warning buzzer sounds to indicate the dis- tance between the vehicle and the obstacle.
