The SRS curtain airbags (if so equipped) aredesigned to supplement properly worn seat
belts and provide the driver and passengers on the front seat and rear outboard seat with
protection against head injuries by deploying the curtain airbag on the side impacted in
moderate-to-severe side impact collisions.
The SRS is NOT a substitute for the seat belts. To ensure the maximum protection dur-
ing all types of collisions and accidents, all
occupants, including the passengers as well as the driver, must wear their seat belts.NOTEl The ERA-GLONASS (if so equipped) is de-
signed to operate when any of the airbags deploy.
Refer to “ERA-GLONASS*” on page 8-02How the Supplemental Re-
straint System works
E00407303284
The SRS includes the following components:
1. Airbag module (Driver)
2. Front passenger’s airbag indicator (Club
cab and Double cab)
3. Airbag module (Passenger)
4. Driver’s knee airbag module*
5. Front passenger’s airbag ON-OFF
switch (Club cab and Double cab)
6. Side airbag modules*
7. Curtain airbag modules*
Only when the ignition switch or the opera- tion mode is under the following conditions,
the airbags will operate.
[Except for vehicles equipped with keyless
operation system]
The ignition switch is in the “ON” or “START” position.
[Vehicles equipped with keyless operation
system]
The operation mode is in ON.
When the airbag control unit detects a roll- over of the vehicle, the curtain airbags will bedeployed. (if so equipped)
The airbags deployment produces a sudden,
loud noise, and releases some smoke and powder, but these conditions are not injuri-
ous, and do not indicate a fire in the vehicle. People with respiratory problems may feel
some temporary irritation from chemicals used to produce the deployment; open the
windows after airbag deployment, if safe to
do so.
The airbags deflate very rapidly after deploy- ment, so there is little danger of obscured vi-
sion.

4-25OKTE17E1Seat and seat belts4
The seat belts in your vehicle are your pri-mary means of protection in a collision. The SRS side airbags and curtain airbags are de-
signed to provide additional protection. Therefore, for your safety and the safety of all occupants, be sure to always properly
wear your seat belts.
The side airbags and curtain airbags MAY NOT DEPLOY
when...
With certain types of side collisions, the ve- hicle’s body structure is designed to absorbthe shock to help protect the occupants fromharm. (The vehicle body’s side area may de-form significantly as it absorbs the impact.) Under such circumstances, the side airbags
and curtain airbags may not deploy irrespec- tive of the deformation and damage to the ve-
hicle body. Examples of some typical condi- tions are shown in the illustration.
1. Side impacts in an area away from the
passenger compartment
2. Motorcycle or other similar small vehi-
cle collides with the side of vehicle
3. Collision with a utility pole, tree or other
narrow object
4. Oblique side impacts
5. Vehicle rolls onto its side or roof
Because the side airbags and curtain airbags do not protect the occupant in all types of side collisions, be sure to always properlywear your seat belts.
The side airbags and curtain
airbags ARE NOT DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when...
The side airbags and curtain airbags are notdesigned to deploy in conditions where they
cannot usually provide protection to the oc- cupant. Typical conditions are shown in the
illustration.
1. Head-on collisions
2. Rear end collisions
3. Pitch end over end*

l If the vehicle is equipped with the automatic
lamp control, when the lamp switch is in a position other than the “OFF” position, the
meter illumination switches automatically to
the adjusted brightness, depending on the
brightness outside the vehicle.
l The brightness level of the instruments is
stored when the ignition switch is turned off or the operation mode is put in OFF.Driving range display
E00538000014
This displays the approximate driving range
(how many more kilometres or miles you can drive). When the driving range falls below
approximately 50 km (30 miles), “---” is dis-
played.
NOTEl The driving range is determined based on
the fuel consumption data. This may vary depending on the driving conditions and habits. Treat the distance displayed as just a
rough guideline.NOTEl When you refuel, the driving range display
is updated.
However, if you only add a small amount of fuel, the correct value will not be displayed.
Fill with a full tank whenever possible.
l On rare occasions, the value displayed for
the driving range may change if you areparked on an extremely steep incline. This is
due to the movement of fuel in the tank and
does not indicate a malfunction.
l The display setting can be changed to the
preferred units (km or miles).
Refer to “Changing the function settings” on page 5-09.Average fuel consumption dis-
play

age fuel consumption display setting, refer to “Changing the function settings” on page 5-09.
NOTEl The average fuel consumption display can
be reset separately for the auto reset mode and for the manual reset mode.
l “---” is displayed when the average fuel con-
sumption cannot be measured.
l The initial (default) setting is “Auto reset
mode”.
l The average fuel consumption depends on
the driving condition (road condition, driv- ing behavior, etc.). The displayed fuel con- sumption may vary from the actual fuel con-
sumption. Treat the fuel consumption dis- played as just a rough guideline.
l The memory of the auto reset mode or man-
ual reset mode for the average fuel con-sumption display is erased if the battery isdisconnected.

NOTElDo not cover the sensor by affixing a sticker
or label to the windscreen. Also, do not put
any water-repellent coating on the wind- screen. The rain sensor would not be able to
detect the extent of rain, and the wipers might stop working normally.
l In the following cases, the rain sensor may
be malfunctioning.
For further information, we recommend you
to consult a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point.
• When the wipers operate at a constant in-
terval despite changes in the extent of rain.
• When the wipers do not operate even
though it is raining.
l The wipers may automatically operate when
things such as insects or foreign objects are affixed to the windscreen on top of the rainsensor or when the windscreen is frozen.
Objects affixed to the windscreen will stop
the wipers when the wipers cannot remove them. To operate the wipers again, move the
lever in the “LO” or “HI” position.
Also, the wipers may operate automatically
due to strong direct sunlight or electromag- netic wave. To stop the wipers, place thelever in the “OFF” position.

Economical drivingE00600102318
For economical driving, there are some tech- nical requirements that have to be met. Theprerequisite for low fuel consumption is a
properly adjusted engine. In order to achieve longer life of the vehicle and the most eco- nomical operation, we recommend you tohave the vehicle checked at regular intervals in accordance with the service standards.
Fuel economy and generation of exhaust gas
and noise are highly influenced by personal
driving habits as well as the particular operat- ing conditions. The following points shouldbe observed in order to minimize wear of
brakes, tyres and engine as well as to reduce
environmental pollution.
Starting the engine
Avoid sudden acceleration and sudden starts,
as they will increase fuel consumption.
Shifting
Shift only at an appropriate speed and engine speed. Always use the highest shift position
possible.
The transfer shift lever or the drive mode-se-
lector should be set to “2H” when driving 4WD vehicles on normal roads and express
ways to obtain best possible fuel economy.
City traffic
Frequent starting and stopping increases the
average fuel consumption. Use roads with smooth traffic flow whenever possible. When driving on congested roads, avoid use of a
low shift position at high engine speeds.
Idling
The vehicle consumes fuel even during idling. Avoid extended idling whenever pos-
sible.
Speed
At higher vehicle speed, more fuel is con-
sumed. Avoid driving at full speed. Even a slight release of the accelerator pedal willsave a significant amount of fuel.
Tyre inflation pressure
Check the tyre inflation pressures at regularintervals. Low tyre inflation pressure increa-ses road resistance and fuel consumption. In
addition, low tyre pressures adversely affect tyre wear and driving stability.
Cargo loads
Do not drive with unnecessary articles in the
luggage compartment. Especially during city
driving where frequent starting and stopping is necessary, the increased weight of the ve-
hicle will greatly affect fuel consumption. Al- so avoid driving with unnecessary luggage or carriers, etc., on the roof; the increased air re- sistance will increase fuel consumption.
Cold engine starting
Starting of a cold engine consumes more fuel. Unnecessary fuel consumption is alsocaused by keeping a hot engine running. Af-
ter the engine is started, commence driving as soon as possible.
Cooler or air conditioning
The use of the air conditioner will increase the fuel consumption.
Driving, alcohol and drugs
E00600200070
Driving after drinking alcohol is one of the
most frequent causes of accidents.

When the A/T (automatic trans-mission) fluid temperature warning lamp comes on
E00615301236
The automatic transmission fluid temperature
warning lamp comes on and a buzzer may
sound, when the automatic transmission fluid
temperature becomes abnormally high. Nor- mally the warning lamp comes on when the
ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, and then
will go off after a few seconds.
CAUTIONl If the lamp comes on, reduce the engine
speed and stop the vehicle in a safe area. Then set the selector lever to “P” (PARK)
position and idle the engine until the warn-
ing lamp goes off. When the warning lamp goes off, resume normal driving. If the
warning lamp does not go off, we recom- mend you to have your vehicle inspected.Operation of the A/T
E00604201697
CAUTIONl Before selecting a gear with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle stationary, fully depress
the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from
creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when the en- gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the airconditioner operating, the brakes should on-
ly be released when you are ready to drive
away.
l Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
l To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.CAUTIONl Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.
l Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions.Never coast downhill backward with the se-
lector lever in the {“D” (DRIVE) or sports mode} or coast forward with the selector
lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position.
The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steering
wheel weight could lead to an accident.
l Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the A/T.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “P” (PARK), “N”
(NEUTRAL) or “D” (DRIVE) position, the
engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation with
the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL)
position.Passing acceleration
