sensor to determine how long the glowplugs stay energized. The required time forthe glow plugs to be energized decreasesas the coolant temperature, barometricpressure and environmental temperatureincrease.
Cold Weather Starting
WARNINGS
Do not use starting fluid, for exampleether, in the air intake system. Suchfluid could cause immediateexplosive damage to the engine andpossible personal injury.
Do not add gasoline, gasohol, alcoholor kerosene to diesel fuel. Thiscreates a serious fire hazard andcauses engine performance problems.
We recommend that the engine blockheater be used for starting when thetemperature is -9°F (-23°C) or colder. SeeEngine Block Heater (page 181).
When operating in cold weather, you mayuse Motorcraft® cetane improvers ornon-alcohol-based cetane improvers froma reputable manufacturer as needed.
Do not crank the engine for more than 10seconds as starter damage may occur. Ifthe engine does not start, switch theignition off and wait 30 seconds beforetrying again.
Switch the ignition on. Do notstart the engine until theglow-plug indicator turns off.
When the glow plug pre-heat indicatorturns off, turn the key to start. After youstart the engine, the glow plugs mayremain on for a period. If you do not startthe engine before the glow plug activationtime ends, you will need to reset the glowplugs by switching the ignition off. Afterthe engine starts, allow it to idle for about15 seconds. This protects the engine. Donot increase engine speed until the oilpressure gauge indicates normal pressure.
Cold Weather Operation
Note:Idling in cold weather does not heatthe engine to its normal operatingtemperature. Long periods of idling,especially in cold weather, can cause abuildup of deposits which can cause enginedamage.
Change to a lighter grade engine oil tomake starting easier under theseconditions. Refer to engine oilspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).
Diesel fuel is adjusted seasonally for coldtemperatures. Diesel fuel which has notbeen properly formulated for the ambientconditions may gel which can clog the fuelfilters. One indication that the fuel filter(s)may be clogged is if the engine starts, stallsafter a short time, and then does notrestart. If you have been using biodiesel,you may need to use a fuel with lowerbiodiesel content, try another brand, ordiscontinue using biodiesel. Do not usealcohol based additives to correct fuelgelling. This may result in damage to thefuel injectors and system. Use the properanti-gel and performance improvementproduct. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).

Choosing the Right Fuel - Flex FuelVehicles
Flex fuel vehicles have one of the followingidentifiers:
•Yellow fuel filler cap.
•Yellow bezel around the fuel filler inlet.
•Yellow fuel filler housing.
•Yellow E85 label on the fuel tank fillerdoor.
Your vehicle is designed to operate onregular unleaded gasoline with a minimumpump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87 orregular unleaded gasoline blended with amaximum of 85% ethanol (E85).
Some fuel stations, particularly those inhigh altitude areas, offer fuels posted asregular unleaded gasoline with an octanerating below 87. We do not recommendthese fuels.
For best overall vehicle and engineperformance, premium fuel with an octanerating of 91 or higher is recommended. Theperformance gained by using premium fuelis most noticeable in hot weather as wellas other conditions, for example whentowing a trailer. See Towing (page 268).
Do not use any fuel other than thoserecommended because they could lead toengine damage that will not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.
Note:Use of any fuel other than thoserecommended can impair the emissioncontrol system and cause a loss of vehicleperformance.
Do not use:
•Diesel fuel.
•Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
•Fuels containing more than 85%ethanol or E100 fuel.

Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contactan authorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.

Look for a label on the fuel pump toconfirm the amount of biodiesel containedin a diesel fuel. Biodiesel content is oftenindicated with the letter B followed by thepercent of biodiesel in the fuel. Forexample, B20 indicates a fuel containing20% biodiesel. Ask the service stationattendant to confirm the biodiesel contentof a diesel fuel if you do not see a label onthe fuel pump.
Biodiesel fuels degrade more easily thandiesel fuels not containing biodiesel andshould not be stored in the fuel tank formore than 1 month. If you plan to park orstore your vehicle for more than 1 month,then you should empty your vehicle fueltank of biodiesel fuel. You should fill thetank with a pure petroleum-based dieselfuel and run your vehicle for a minimum of30 minutes.
Note:Degraded or oxidized biodiesel candamage fuel system seals and plastics andcorrode steel parts.
During cold weather, if you have problemsoperating on biodiesel, you may need touse a diesel fuel with lower biodieselcontent, try another brand, or discontinuethe use of biodiesel.
Diesel Fuel Additives
It should not be necessary to add anyaftermarket additives to your fuel if youuse a high quality diesel fuel that conformsto ASTM industry specifications.Aftermarket additives can damage the fuelinjector system or engine.
Use Motorcraft® cetane booster or anequivalent cetane booster additive if yoususpect fuel has low cetane. UseMotorcraft® anti-gel & performanceimprover or an equivalent additive if thereis fuel gelling.
Do not use alcohol-based additives toimprove cetane quality, to prevent fuelgelling or any other use. The use of alcoholadditives may result in damage to the fuelinjectors and system. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 427).
The Vehicle Warranty may not coverrepairs needed to correct the effects ofusing an aftermarket product that doesnot meet Ford specifications in your fuel.
FUEL QUALITY - GASOLINE

RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Avoid running out of fuel because thissituation may have an adverse effect onengine components.
If you have run out of fuel:
•You may need to cycle the ignition fromoff to on several times after refuelingto allow the fuel system to pump thefuel from the tank to the engine. Onrestarting, cranking time will take a fewseconds longer than normal. Withkeyless ignition, just start the engine.Crank time will be longer than usual.
•Normally, adding 1.06 gal (4 L) of fuelis enough to restart the engine. If thevehicle is out of fuel and on a steepgrade, more than 1.06 gal (4 L) may berequired.
SELECTIVE CATALYTIC
REDUCTION SYSTEM - DIESEL
Your vehicle may have a selective catalyticreduction system. The system helps reduceemission levels of oxides of nitrogen fromthe exhaust system. The systemautomatically injects diesel exhaust fluidinto the exhaust system to enable correctselective catalytic reduction systemfunction.
Note:Selective catalytic reduction systemsare not fitted to vehicles in markets whereonly high-sulfur diesel fuel is available.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Level
In order for the system to operate correctlyyou must maintain the diesel exhaust fluidlevel.
A warning message appears in theinformation display when the dieselexhaust fluid level is low. If a warningmessage appears, refill the diesel exhaustfluid tank as soon as possible. SeeInformation Messages (page 128).
Filling the Diesel Exhaust FluidTank
WARNINGS
Keep diesel exhaust fluid out ofreach of children. Avoid contact withskin, eyes or clothing. In case ofcontact with your eyes, flush immediatelywith water and get prompt medicalattention. In case of contact with your skin,clean immediately with soap and water. Ifyou swallow any diesel exhaust fluid, drinkplenty of water, call a physicianimmediately.

BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). Duringthis time, your vehicle may exhibit someunusual driving characteristics.
Avoid driving too fast during the first1,000 mi (1,600 km). Vary your speedfrequently and change up through thegears early. Do not labor the engine.
Drive your new vehicle at least 1,000 mi(1,600 km) before towing a trailer. Makesure you use the specified engine oil. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page422).
Do not add friction modifier compoundsor special break-in oils during the first fewthousand miles (kilometers) of operation.These additives may prevent piston ringseating.
ECONOMICAL DRIVING
Your fuel economy is affected by severalthings, such as how you drive, theconditions you drive under, and how youmaintain your vehicle.
You may improve your fuel economy bykeeping these things in mind:
•Accelerate and slow down in a smooth,moderate fashion.
•Drive at steady speeds withoutstopping.
•Anticipate stops; slowing down mayeliminate the need to stop.
•Combine errands and minimizestop-and-go driving.
•Close the windows for high-speeddriving.
•Drive at reasonable speeds (travelingat 55 mph [88 km/h] uses 15% lessfuel than traveling at 65 mph [105km/h]).
•Keep the tires properly inflated and useonly the recommended size.
•Use the recommended engine oil.
•Perform all regularly scheduledmaintenance.
Avoid these actions; they reduce your fueleconomy:
•Sudden accelerations or hardaccelerations.
•Revving the engine before turning it off.
•Idle for periods longer than one minute.
•Warm up your vehicle on coldmornings.
•Use the air conditioner or frontdefroster.
•Use the speed control in hilly terrain.
•Rest your foot on the brake pedal whiledriving.
•Drive a heavily loaded vehicle or tow atrailer.
•Carry unnecessary weight(approximately 1 mpg [0.4 km/L] islost for every 400 lb [180 kilogram] ofweight carried).
•Driving with the wheels out ofalignment.
Conditions
•Heavily loading a vehicle or towing atrailer may reduce fuel economy at anyspeed.
•Adding certain accessories to yourvehicle (for example bug deflectors,rollbars, light bars, running boards, skiracks or luggage racks) may reducefuel economy.
•To maximize the fuel economy, drivewith the tonneau cover installed (ifequipped).
•Using fuel blended with alcohol maylower fuel economy.

ENGINE OIL CHECK - 6.7L
DIESEL
To check the engine oil level consistentlyand accurately, do the following:
1. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
2. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature.
3.Make sure the parking brake is on. Makesure the transmission is in park (P) orneutral (N).
4. Switch the engine off and wait 15minutes for the oil to drain into the oilpan. Checking the engine oil level toosoon after you switch the engine offmay result in an inaccurate reading.
5. Open the hood. See Opening andClosing the Hood (page 322).
6. Remove the dipstick and wipe it witha clean, lint-free cloth. See UnderHood Overview (page 323).
7. Replace the dipstick and remove itagain to check the oil level. SeeEngine Oil Dipstick (page 327).
8.Make sure that the oil level is betweenthe maximum and minimum marks. Ifthe oil level is at the minimum mark,add oil immediately. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 427).

Coolant Change
At specific mileage intervals, as listed inthe scheduled maintenance information,the coolant should be changed. Theinformation display may display a messageto change coolant at this time. Addprediluted coolant approved to the correctspecification. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 415).
Engine-driven Cooling Fan (FanClutch)
Your vehicle may have an engine drivencooling fan drive (also called a fan clutch).This fan drive changes the fan speed tomatch the vehicle’s changing cooling airflow requirements. Fan speed, fan noiselevel and fuel consumption all will increasebased on the driving conditions thatinclude trailer towing, hill climbing, heavyloads, high speed and high ambienttemperature, individually or in combination.
The fan drive is designed to provide theminimum fan speed (and resultingminimum fan noise and fuel consumption)required to meet the ever changing vehiclecooling air flow requirements. You will hearthe amount of fan noise increasing anddecreasing as the engine powerrequirements and vehicle driving conditionschange as you drive. This is to be expectedas being normal to the operation of yourvehicle. High levels of fan noise might alsobe heard when your engine is first started,and should normally decrease after drivingfor a short time.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
FLUID CHECK
Have an authorized dealer check andchange the transmission fluid and filter atthe correct service interval. SeeScheduled Maintenance (page 573).
Do not use supplemental transmissionfluid additives, treatments or cleaningagents. The use of these materials mayaffect transmission operation and resultin damage to internal transmissioncomponents.
Checking Automatic TransmissionFluid
For scheduled intervals of the fluid checksand changes, See ScheduledMaintenance (page 573). Yourtransmission does not consume fluid.However, the fluid level should be checkedif the transmission is not working properly,i.e., if the transmission slips or shifts slowlyor if you notice some sign of fluid leakage.
Automatic transmission fluid expandswhen warmed. To obtain an accurate fluidcheck, drive the vehicle until it is at normaloperating temperature (approximately19 mi (30 km)). Verify that thetransmission fluid temperature gauge,located on the instrument cluster, is withinnormal range.
1. Drive the vehicle 19 mi (30 km)until itreaches normal operating temperature.
2.Park the vehicle on a level surface andengage the parking brake.
3.With the engine running, parking brakeengaged and your foot on the brakepedal, move the gearshift lever throughall of the gear ranges. Allow sufficienttime for each gear to engage.
4.Latch the gearshift lever in P and leavethe engine running.
5. Remove the dipstick, wiping it cleanwith a clean, dry lint free rag. Ifnecessary, refer to the Under HoodOverview in this chapter for thelocation of the dipstick.
