Lamp (MIL) II will illuminate.  If this  occurs, 
contact  the  nearest  authorized  Audi dealer  for 
assistance. 
A WARNING 
Always  observe  the  posted  speed  limits and 
adjust  your  speed  to  suit  prevailing  road,  traf
fic and  weather  conditions.  Never drive  your 
vehicle  faster than  the  maximum  speed  rating 
of  the  tires  installed. 
Auto  Check  Control 
Introduction 
The  Auto-Check  control  monitors  the  function  of 
certa in vehicle  features  and  components.  It  sim
ply  makes  sure  these  features  and  components 
are  working  properly.  The  Auto-Check  control 
works  as  long  as  the ignition  is on,  as  well  as 
whenever  the  veh icle  is  driven. 
-
If  a  component  is malfunctioning  or  if the  need 
for  an  urgent  repair has  been  detected,  this  will 
appear  in  the instrument  cluster  display.  You will 
also  hear  an  audib le warning  tone . The  displays 
are  color  coded in eit he r red  or  yellow  depending 
on  their  level  of priority. 
A red  symbol  means 
Danger, a yellow  symbol  in
d icates 
Warning . In certain  s ituations,  informa
tion  message  for the  driver  appea r in addition  to 
the  red and  yellow  symbols . 
Note  about  automatic transmission 
The Auto -Check  Control  will  automatically  per
form  a test  each  time  you  switch  on  the  ignition.  W ith  the  selector  lever  in P or  N, the  fo llowing 
message  appears  in the display: 
When  stationary  apply  brake pedal while select
ing  gear 
When  you  select  a  different  gear  (for  example:  R,  D, etc.),  the  message  will  disappear  and  the  Au
to-Check  function  is displayed. 
If  there  is a  malfunct ion,  then  the  malfunction 
message  will  appear  about  15  seconds  after  you 
start  the  vehicle.  At the  same  time  you  will  hear  a 
warn ing tone.

Driver information  messages  are shown  in  the  in
strument  cluster  display  in  addition  to  symbols.

For  example,  if the  transmission  selector  lever  is 
not  in the  P position  when  the  engine  is tu rned 
off, the  following  message  appears: 
Shift  to  P otherwise  vehicle can roll  away.  Doors 
do not  lock if  lever is not  in  P. 
The  ign ition  key can  only  be  removed with  these
lector  in this  position.  This and other  messages 
are  brought  up  if a function  cannot be carried 
out. 
Driver  messages  and  red  symbols 
If  a red  symbol  appears in the  disp lay,  a  driver 
message  is also  displayed  automatically. 
For  example,  the  symbol  for  a  problem  with  en
gine  o il pressure . appears  in  the display.  The 
follow ing  message  appears: 
Turn  off  engine!  Oil pressure too  low 
The  driver  message  in the  display  goes  out  after 
about  5  seconds.  The  driver  message  can  be  dis played  again  by  briefly  pressing  the 
I  SETI button

Driver  messages  and  yellow  symbols 
If  a yellow  symbol  appears  in the  display,  a driver 
message  is also  displayed  automatically.

On vehicles with  Convenience  key*, the  selector 
lever  must  be in the  P position,  otherwise  the  ve
h icle cannot  be locked .

Open ing  and  closing 
(D Tips 
-In order  to  make  sure  the  locking function  is 
working, you should  a lways  keep your eye 
on the  vehicle to  make  sure  it is proper ly 
locked. 
- Do not  use the  remote  control  if you are  in
side the  car, otherwise  you may  uninten
tionally  lock the  vehicle, and  then  you would  set  off the  anti -theft  alarm  when you try to 
start  the  eng ine or open  a door . In case  this 
happens  anyhow,  push  the unlock  button@. 
- Use the  pan ic  function  only if you are  in an 
emergency  situation . 
Locking and  unlocking  with  Convenience 
key 
Applies  to:  vehicles  with  Convenience  key 
The  doors  and  the  rear lid con be  unlocked  and 
locked  without  operating  the master  key.

This  message  appears  in a veh icle  with  Conven
ience  key* if the  master  key  is  removed  from  the 
ve hicle  w ith  the  engine  r unning. 
If the  maste r 
key  is  no  longer  in the  vehicle,  you  cannot  switch 
on  the  ignition  after  stopping  the  engine  and  you 
also  cannot  start  the  eng ine  again.  Moreover,  you 
cannot  lock  the  veh icle  from  the  outside  with  the 
key.

This  message  appea rs fo r sa fe ty  reasons  a long 
with  a warning  signal.

The electromechanical  parking  brake  replaces

Driving 
Automatic  transmission 
Introduction 
The  automat ic t ransmission  is  cont rolled  e lec
tron ica lly . The  transmission  ups hifts  or  down 
shifts  au toma tically  depending  on  wh ich  drive 
p rogram  is selected.  The  power  is transferred  by 
a  torque  converter . 
When  a 
moderate  driving styl e is used , the 
t ra nsmission  se lects  t he  most  eco nomical  d riving 
mode. 
It will  then  change  up  early  an d de lay  the 
downshifts  to  give  better  fuel  economy . 
The  transm iss ion  switches  to  a  spo rty  mode  afte r 
a  kic k-down  or  when  the  drive r uses  a 
sporty 
dri ving  st yle 
character ized  by quic k accelerator 
pedal  movements,  heavy  acce leration,  freq uent 
changes  in speed  and  traveling  at  the  maximum 
speed.

Automatic  Shift  Lock (ASL)

The Automatic  Shift  Lock safeguards  you  against 
accidentally  shifting  into  a forward  or the  re
verse gear  and  causing  the  vehicle to  move  unin 
ten tionally.

The  selector  lever  lock  is released  as  follows : 
" Tur n the  ignition  on. 
" Step  on t he  br ake  pedal. 
At  the same  time 
press  a nd  ho ld  the  release  bu tton  on  the  side  of 
the  gear  se lector  knob

Automatic  selector  lever  lock 
T he  selec tor  leve r is  lo cked  in t he  P and  N posi 
t io ns w hen  the  ig nition  is tu rned  on.  You m ust 
press  the  brake  peda l and  the  release  button  to 
select  another  position . As a  reminder  to  the 
driver,  the  following  warn ing  appears  in the  in 
strument  cluster  d isplay  when  the  se lector  is  in  P 
and  N:

T he  Au tomatic  Sh ift  Lock only fu nctio ns when  the 
veh icle  is stationary  o r at  spee ds  be low  1  mph 
(2  km/h). 
At spee ds  above  abou t 1  mp h (2  km/h)  the  Au to
ma tic  Sh ift  Lock  is autom atically  deact ivated  in 
the  N positio n. 
A time  de lay e lemen t prevents  the  se lector  lever 
from  lo cking  whe n it  i s  moved  thro ugh  the  N po
s ition  (going  from  R to  D/S) . The  locking  element 
will  lock  the  selector  leve r if the  lever  is left  in  N 
(Ne utral)  for  more  than  approximately  1 second, 
without  the  brake  pedal  being  pressed. 
Release  button 
T he  release  but ton  on  the  selector  leve r preve nts 
the  lever  from  be ing  accidenta lly shifted  into  cer 
ta in  positions.  Pressing  this  button  deactivates 
the  se lector  lever  lock . Depending  on  the  d irec
t ion  of the  sh ift,  the  se lector  lever  locks  at  d iffer

On slopes,  activate  the  parking  brake  first  and 
then  move  the  selector  lever  to  the  P position. 
This  prevents  too  m uch  stress  from  being  placed 
on  the  locking  mechanism. 
A WARNING

- Never  leave  your  veh icle  with  the  engine 
r u nning  while  in gear . If you  mus t leave 
your  veh icle  when  the  engine  is running,  ac

- P owe r is still  transmitted  to  the  wheels 
w hen  t he engine  is  running  at  idle . To  pre
vent  the  vehi cle  from  "creeping",  yo u m ust 
keep  your  foot  on  the  brake  when  the  en 
gine  is running  and  the  se lector  lever  is  in  0/ 
Sor  R or  "tiptronic"  mode  is  se lected . 
- Do not  press  the  acce le ra tor  pedal  when 
changing  t he se lector  lever  posit ion  while 
the  vehicle  is stat ionary  and  the  engine  is 
running. 
- Never  shift  into  R or  P whi le  driving. 
- Before  driving  down  a  s teep  slope,  reduce 
your  spee d and  sh ift  into  a  lower  gear  with 
"t i pt ronic" .

- Whe n the  ki ck-down  comes  on,  the  trans
mission  w ill shif t down  to  a  lowe r gear,  de
pend ing  o n ve hicl e  and  engine  speeds. 
- Ti ptroni c is  inoperat ive when  the  transm is
sion  is  in the  fail-safe  mode. 
- Hyb rid  drive*:  elect ric  dr iving  is not  po ssib le 
in t ipt ronic  mode. 
Kick-down 
Kick-down enables  maximum  acceleration. 
When  you  depress  the  accelerator pedal  beyond 
the  resistance  point,  the  a utomat ic transmiss ion 
downshifts  into  a  lower  gear,  depending  on  vehi
cl e  speed  and  engine  speed.  The  upsh ift  into  the 
next  highe r gear  takes  p lace  on ce t he  maxim um 
spec ified  eng ine  speed  is  reached .

Transmission  malfunction
