Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

The transmission temperature has increased sig­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
rm Transmission malfunction: You can continue
driving
There is a system mal funct ion in the transm is­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion . T he transmission is switching to emergency
mode. This mode only shifts in to certa in gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified
repair faci lity immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector lev­
e r position and see your a uthorized Aud i dea le r
or qualified repair facility for assistance.
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you should take the vehicle to an au­
t horized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition cor rected.

Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

The selector lever can only be moved from the P
position if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on. If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle
must be pushed or towed, move the selector lev­
er to the N position f irst using the emergency re­
l ease .

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .
This may ca use coll is ions and severe or fatal

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­

is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.

- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal when starting the vehicle .
Shift to N or P to start vehicle
This message appears if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the Nor P posi­
tions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
lfthe indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the hybrid sys­
tem . The brake booster and the power steering
may stop working. Stop the vehicle in a safe loca­
tion as soon as possible.

Charging the batteries

If the 12 vo lt batte ries are dead, they may be
ch arged wi th a charger or the vehicle may be
j u mp s tarted wi th assis tan ce from ano ther veh i­
cl e in the same way as a conventional vehicle.

used for both charging and jump starting

Vehicle not ready to start. See owner's
manual
This message appears if the high voltage battery
charge level is too low. The vehicle can no longer
be started with its own power. The high voltage
battery must be charged with a charger or the ve­
h icle must be jump started with the aid of anoth­
er vehicle.
After the connecting the charger or jumper ca­
bles, the ignition must be turned off for approxi­
mately two minutes and then turned on again .
After no more than one m inute, one of the fol­
lowing indicator lights turns on in the instrument
cluste r display .
B Charging battery. Please wait ...
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, the high voltage battery is charg ing or
the vehicle is be ing jump started with assistance
from another veh icle .
If the 12 volt batteries are dead, the- indi­
cator light turns on . The charging procedure
takes longer in this case because the 12 volt bat­
ter ies are charged first. The procedure goes fast­
er with the ig nition sw itched off.
Vehicle ready to start.
This message appears if the charging procedure
was successful. The vehicle may be started again .
Battery could not be charged enough to start
vehicle .
This message appears if the charging procedure
was not successful or it was interrupted. Th is
may happen if the charger or the battery in the
veh icle that is assisting is too weak.
If the veh icle
can not be started, see an authorized repa ir facil i­
ty for ass istanc e.
(D Tips
-The charger should deliver a current of at
l east 30 A. Otherwise charging the high
voltage battery will take considerably Ion-

ger. A current between 50 A and 70 A is ide ­
al.
- Th e veh icle that is assisting should be some­
what within the same vehicle class when
jump starting a vehicle. A smaller vehicle's
battery may be drained.
- After approximately 30 minutes, the charg­
ing procedure ends because the ignit ion is
automatically turned off. If you would like
to cont inue to charge the battery, turn the
ignition on again.
Vehicle transport

The following contains information you should
know about transporting your vehicle.
The lithium ion battery (SANYO 72 UF 121 285)
installed in your vehicle has passed test 38.3 in
accordance with UN handbook tests and criteria.
The vehicle may be transported with the battery
i nstalled as conventional class 9 hazardous mate­
rials without addit ional officia l consent for a ir
and sea transportation (current law !CAO-TI and
IMDG-Code 01.01.2012).

Audi adaptive cruise control and braking guard
promptly detected or may not be detected
at all.
- Reflective surfaces including crash barriers
or tunnel entrances may impair the function
oftheradarsensor.
(D Tips
-You can cancel the braking that is initiated
by the system by braking yourself, by accel­
erating noticeably or by swerving.
- Braking guard error messages

- Keep in mind that braking guard can brake
unexpectedly. Always secure any cargo or
objects that you are transporting to reduce

Braking guard: Activated
This driver message appears if sharp brake pres­
sure was applied due to an acute warning.

Three white dots appear if a setting cannot be se­
lected with the operating lever . For example, this
happens if you want to raise/lower the speed
even though there was no previously saved
speed.
ACC: Sensor blocked
This message appears if the sensor view is ob­
structed, for example by leaves, snow, heavy
spray or dirt. Clean the sensor

ACC: Unavailable
The driver message appears if, for example, the
brake temperature is too high. The adaptive
cruise control is temporarily unavailable. A chime
sounds as a rem inder.
ACC: Not available
The driver message appears if there is a malfunc­
tion. The adaptive cruise control turns off. A
chime sounds as a reminder. Have the system
checked by an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility.
Shift lever position!
The driver message appears if the selector lever
is shifted to the N position. The adaptive cruise
control is not available while in this position.
Stabilization control (ESC)
This message appears if the Electronic Stabiliza­
tion Control (ESC) is taking action to stabilize the .,.

-The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat and child
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof .
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward fac ing ch ild
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­ cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-fac ing ch ild safety seat in a rear
seating pos it ion and have the airbag system
inspected by your a uthorized Audi dea le r.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety sea ts installed
on the front passenger's seat may interfere
with the deployment of the airbag and
cause serious personal injury to the child.
~ WARNING
If, in except ional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing chi ld restraint on the
front passenger 's seat:
- Always ma ke sure the forward-fac ing seat
has been designed and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and s ide a irbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint
up against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
-Always move the front passenger seat to
the highest position in the up and down ad ­
justment range and move it back to the
rea rmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as fa r away from the air­
bag as possib le, before insta lling the for­
ward- facing child restra int .
- Always ma ke sure tha t the safety belt upper
anchorage is beh ind the child restrain t and
not next to or in front o f the chi ld restraint
so that the safety belt will be properly pos i­
tioned.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.
Airb ag sys tem
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious injury, make sure
that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light will
be d isplayed whenever a child restraint is in­
stalled on the front passenger seat and the
i gnition is switched on .
-If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not stay on , perform t he checks desc ribed
~ page 158, Monitoring the Advanced Air­
bag System.
- Take the child restra int off t he front passen­
ge r seat an d install it prope rly at one of the
rear sea t positions i f the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not stay on .
- Have the air bag system inspec ted by your
author ized Audi dealer immed iate ly .
- Always c are fully follow ins tructions from
child restrain t manufacture rs when instal­
ling child restraints .
If, in exceptional c ircumstances, you must in ­
stall a forward or rearward-facing child re­
stra int on the front passenger's seat:
- Imp roper installation of child restraints can
reduce their effectiveness or even prevent
them from providing any protect ion.
- An improperly installed child restra int can
interfere with the airbag as it deploys and
serious ly injure or even kill the chi ld -even
with an Advanced A irbag System.
- Always care fully follow the manufacturer 's
instr uctions provided with the child safety
seat or carr ie r.
- Never p lace add itiona l items on the seat
that can increase the total weight registered by the weight -sensing mat and can cause in­
jury in a crash.
