The cruise control system cannot maintain
the speed cons istently if you are driving on
steep hills. The vehicle weight ca uses the
speed to increase. Due to th is, shift into a

Overriding the cruise control system
Applies to: veh icles with cru ise control system
You can a lso press the accelerator pedal down to
increase your speed, for example if you want to
pass someone. The speed you set earlier w ill re­
sume as soon as you release the accelerator ped ­
al.
However, if you are exceeding the stored speed
by a cons iderable amount for a long time, the
cru ise control system will temporar ily switch off .
The
M;ll)~i~ (USA models) 1 B (Canada models) in­
d icator light in the instrument cluster turns off
and the sto red speed is maintai ned.
Preselecting the speed
Applies to: vehicles with cruise control system
You can pre-select your desired speed when the
vehicle is stationary.
~ Switch the ign ition on .

Audi drive select
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
Drive select makes it possible to experience dif­
ferent types of vehicle settings in one vehicle.
The driver can selec t from three modes,
Comfort,
Auto
and Dynamic , using the ~:/:a button in the
center console or by using the Infotainment sys­
tem . This allows yo u to switch between a sporty
and a comfortable driving mode, for example.
Description
App lies to: ve hicles with Audi drive select
The following systems, among other things , are
influenced by drive select:
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and auto­
matic transmission respond more quickly or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements. In the sporty dynamic mode, the
transmission shifts at higher speed ranges.
Suspension control*
The adaptive dampers use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and accelerat ion operations by the driver,
road surface, driv ing speed, and load . With dr ive
select, you can adjust the adaptive dampers to
sporty (dynamic), comfortable (comfort) or bal­
anced (auto).
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering assis­
tance . Indirect steering that moves easily as in
comfort mode is especially su ited to long drives
on a highway . In contrast, dynamic mode pro­
vides sporty, direct steeri ng.
Cornering light*
The cornering light adapts to driving on curves .
The pivoting action and the lighting also adapt to
the mode.
Assist
(D Tips
The 5 selector lever position automatically en­
gages if the dynamic mode is se lected.

You can change the driving mode when the vehi­
cle is stationary or while driving . If traffic per­
mits, after changing modes, briefly take your
foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently
selected mode is also activated for the engine.
Comfort -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on highways.
Auto -provides an overall comfortable yet dy­
namic driving feel and is suited for everyday use .
Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving fee l
and is suited to a sporty driving style.

You should only switch offroad mode on or
switch ESC/ ASR off if your driving abilities
and the traff ic conditions perm it. There is a
r isk of slid ing.
- The stabilization function is limited when
offroad mode is switched on. The driving
wheels co uld spin and the vehicle could
swerve , especially on slick or slippery road
surfaces.
- T here is no vehicle stab ilizat ion when ESC/
ASR are switched off .
Hill descent assist
Applies to: vehicles with hill hold assist
Hill descent assist makes it possible to drive
down a hill at a constant speed.

.,. To switch the hill descent assist on, press the

LED in the button turns on.
.,. Press the button again to switch it off. The LED
in the button turns off.
Hill descent assist brakes all four wheels auto­
matically in order to limit speed when driving ei­
ther forward or reverse on hills with a grade up to
approx imately 50%.
When hill descent assist is on, the speed your ve­ hicle was traveling when it entered the hill is
maintained. It is only possible to switch on the
assist when driving slower than 37 mph (60 km/
h). The assist occurs br iefly after start ing to drive
up to approximately 19 mph (30 km/h). The driv­
er can increase or decrease the vehicle speed

within these limits by pressing the accelerator or
brake peda l.
However, there must be enough tract ion. Hill de­
scent assist
cannot function as expec ted, if fo r
example the hill is icy or if the surface is loose
c:>,& .
Active assistance at a specific speed up to about
19 mph (30 km/h) is shown in the instrument
cluster through a blinking indicator light •. The
indicator light shines continuously when in the
ready mode.
The system does not work at speeds between 19
and 37 mph (30 and 60 km/h). The system is
then in ready-mode . This is indicated by the LED
i n the button turning on. The system automat i­
ca lly switched off when you drive faster than 37
mph (60 km/h) . The LED will also turn off in this
scenario.
Hill descent assist is automatically activated un­
der the following conditions:
- the LED in the button turns on,
- the vehicle speed is lower than 19 mph (30 km/
h),
- the incline angle is at least around 10%.
_&. WARNING
-Always adapt your speed to the weather,
road and traffic conditions. Do not let the
increased safety provided tempt you into
taking risks, because this increases the risk
of an accident .

-The hill descent ass ist system cannot over­
come the laws of physics. Your driving style
must always be adapted to the current road
and traffic conditions.
- Hill descent ass ist may not be ab le to hold
your vehicle at a constant speed under all
conditions while dr iv ing on a hill (for exam­
ple if ground u nder the vehicle is loose).
Brakes
New brake pads
New brake pads do not achieve their full braking
effect during the first 250 mi (400 km). They
must be "broken in" first. However, you can ..,.

Safety belts
General information
Always wear safety belts!
Wearing safety belts correctly saves lives!
This chapter explains why safety belts are neces­
sary, how they work and how to adjust and wear
them correctly.
.. Read all the information that follows and heed
all of the instructions and WARNINGS.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them im­
properly increases the risk of serious personal
injury and death.
- Safety belts are the single most effective
means available to reduce the risk of serious
injury and death in automobile accidents.
For your protection and that of your passen­
gers, always correctly wear safety belts
when the vehicle is moving.
- Pregnant women, injured, o r physically im­
paired persons must also use safety belts.
Like all vehicle occupants, they are more
likely to be seriously injured if they do not
wear safety belts. The best way to protect a
fetus is to protect the mother -throughout
the entire pregnancy.
Number of seats
Your Audi has a total of five seating positions:
two in the front and three in the rear. Each seat­ ing position has a safety belt.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them im­
properly increases the risk of serious personal
injury and death.
- Never strap more than one person, includ­
ing small children, into any belt.
It is espe­
cially dangerous to place a safety belt over a
child sitting on your lap.
- Never let mo re people ride in the vehicle
than there are safety belts available.
Safety belts
-Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is
properly restrained with a separate safety
belt or child restraint.
Safety belt warning light
Your vehicle has a warning system for the driver
and front seat passenger to remind you about the importance of buckling-up.

Before driving off, always:
.. Fasten your safety belt and make sure you are
wearing it properly.

tem appropr iate for the size and age of the chil­
dren .
The warning light . in the instrument cluster
lights up when the ignit ion is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten the safety belts . In addition,
you w ill hear a warn ing tone for a certain period
of time.
Fasten your safety belt now and make sure that
your passengers also properly put on their safe­
ty belts.

Even though yo ur vehicle is equipped with an Ad­
vanced Airbag System, make certain that all chil­
dren, especially those 12 years and younge r, a l­
ways ride in the back seat properly restrained for
their age and size. The airbag on the passenger
side makes the front seat a potentially dangerous place for a child to ride. The front seat is not the
safest place for a child in a forward-facing child
safety seat .
It can be a very dangerous place for
a n infant or a child in a rearward-fac ing seat.
The Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle has
been certified to comply with the requirements
of United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety
Standa rd (FMVSS) 208, as well as Canada Motor
Veh icle Safety Standa rd (CMVSS) 208 as applica­
b le a t the time your veh icle was m an ufact ured.
Accord ing to requirements, the front Advanced
Airbag System on the passenger side has been
certified for "suppression" for infants of about
12 month old and younger and for "low risk de­
ployment" for children aged
3 to 6 years old (as
defined in the standard) .
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG O FF light in the instru­
ment panel tells you when the front Advanced
Airbag on the passenger side has been turned
off
by the electronic control unit.
Each time yo u switch on the ignition, the
PAS ·
S ENGER AIR BAG OFF
light will come on for a
few seconds and:
- will stay on if the front passenger seat is not
occupied,
-will stay on if there is a sma ll chi ld or chi ld re ­
straint on the front passenge r seat,
- will go
off if the front passenger seat is occu ­
pied by an adult as reg istered by the weight­
sensing mat

airbag on the passenger side can dep loy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG O FF light does not come
on). If the
PA SSENGER AIR BA G OFF light does
not come on, the front airbag on the passenger
s ide has not been turned
off by the electronic
control unit and can deploy if the contro l unit
senses an impact that meets the conditions stor­
ed in its memo ry .
For example, the airbag may deploy if:
- a small ch ild that is heav ier than a typ ica l 1
year-o ld child is on the front passenger seat
(regardless of whether the child is in one of the
child safety seats listed
c:> page 139), or
- a child who has outgrown c hild restraints is on
the front passenger seat.
If the front passenger airbag is t urned off, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG O FF light comes on in the
instrument cluster and stays on.
T he front airbag on the passenger side may
not
deploy (the PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF light does
not illuminate and stay lit) even if a small adu lt
or teenager, or a passenger who is not s itting up­
right w ith their back against a non-recl ined back­
rest with the ir feet on the vehicle floor i n front of
the seat is on the front passenger seat

If the front passenge r a irbag deploys, the Feder ­
al Standard requi res the airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment cri te ria to reduce the r is k of in­
j u ry throug h interact ion w it h t he airbag. "Low
risk" deploymen t occurs in t hose crashes tha t
take place at lowe r dece lerations as defined in
the e lectronic control unit

Always remembe r, a ch ild safety sea t or infan t
carr ier installed on the front seat may be s truck
and knocked out of positio n by the rapidly i nflat ­
ing passenger's airbag in a frontal coll ision . The
airbag could greatly red uce the effectiveness of
the child restraint and even seriously injure the
child during inflation .

Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in your vehicle has a lot
of very important parts of the Advanced Airbag
System in it. These parts include the we ight­
sensing mat, sensors, w iring, brac kets, and
mo re. The function of the system in the front
passenger seat is checked by the elec tronic con ­
trol unit when the ignition is on. The contro l unit
monitors the Advanced Airbag System and turns
the airbag indicator light on when a malfunct ion
in the system components is detected. The func­
tion of the airbag indicator light is described in
greater detail below. Because the front passen­
ge r seat contains important parts of the Ad­
vanced A irbag System, you must take care to p re­
vent i t from being damaged. Damage to the seat
may prevent the Advanced Airbag for the fron t
passenger seat from doing its job in a c rash.
The front Advanced Airbag System consists
of th e follow ing :
-Crash sensors in the front of the vehicle that
measure vehicle acceleration/deceleration to
provide information to the Advanced Airbag
System about the severity of the crash.
- An e lectronic control unit, with integrated
crash sensors for front and side impacts. The
contro l unit "decides" whether to fire the front
airbags based on the information received from
the crash sensors . The control unit also "de­
c ides" whether the safety belt pretens ioners
sho uld be activated .
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and
contro l valve fo r the driver ins ide the steer ing
whee l hub.
-An Advanced Airbag with gas generator and contro l valve inside the instrument pane l for
the front passenger.

- A weight -sensing mat under the upholstery
padding of the front passenger seat cushion
that measures the total weight on the seat. The
information reg istered is sent cont inuous ly to
the electronic control unit to regulate deploy­
ment of the front Advanced Airbag on the pas­
senger s ide .
- An airbag monitoring system and ind icator
light in the instrument cluster

-A sensor in each front seat registers the dis­
tance between the respective seat and the
steer ing wheel or instrument panel. The infor­
mat ion registered is sent cont inuously to the
elect ronic contro l unit to regu late dep loyment
of the fron t Advanced Airbags.
- The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on
and stays on in the cente r of the ins trument
pa nel

the front Advanced Airbag on the passenger

off .
-A sensor below the safety be lt latch for the
front seat passenger to measure the tension on
the safety belt. The tension on the safety belt
and the weight registered by the weight-sens­
ing mat help the control unit "decide" whether
the front airbag for the front passenger seat
should be turned off or not

- A sensor in the safety belt latch for the driver
and for the front seat passenger that senses
whether that safety be lt is latched o r not and
transmits this informa tion to the e lec tronic
cont rol un it.
_&. WARNING
D amage to the front passenger seat can pre ­
vent the front airbag from working prope rly .
- Improper repair or disassembly of the front
passenger and driver seat will prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from f unctioning
properly.
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must be
performed by qualified and proper ly trained
workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or driver
seat from the vehicle.

-make sure that the safety belt tension sensor is
not blocked. Shake the safety be lt latch on the
front passenger seatback and forth;
- If a strap or tether is being used to tie the child
safety seat to the front passenger seat, make
sure that it is not so tight that it causes the
weight-sensing mat to measure more weight
than is actually on the seat.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF li ght still d oes
not come on
and does not stay on continuously
(when the ignition is switched on),
- take the child restraint off the front passenger
seat and install it properly at one of the rear
seat positions. Have the airbag system inspect­
ed by your authori zed Audi dealer immediately.
- move the child to a rear seat position and make
sure that the child is properly restra ined in a
child restraint that is appropriate for its size
and age .
The
PAS SENGER AIR BAG O FF light shou ld NOT
come on when the ignition is on and an adult is
sitting in a proper seating position on the front
passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on or flashes for about
5 seconds while driving, under these circ umstan­
ces, make su re that:
- the adult on the front passenger seat is proper­
ly seated on the center of the seat cushion with
his or her back up aga inst the backrest and the
back rest is not recl ined

ment cluster d isp lay. This is to inform the driver
of the current front passenger airbag status.
Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
-An a irbag system that is not functioning prop-
erly cannot prov ide supplemental protect ion
i n a fronta l crash.
- If the ai rbag ind icator light

comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer.
It is possible that
the airbag will inflate when it is not sup­
posed to, or w ill not inflate w hen it should.
A WARNING
If the fron t airbag i nflates, a chi ld without a
chi ld restraint, in a rearward-facing ch ild safe­
ty seat or in a forward-facing chi ld restraint
that has not been properly installed will be
seriously in jured and can be ki lled .
- Even tho ugh yo ur vehicle is equipped with
an Advanced A irbag System, make certain
that all children, especia lly 12 years and
younger, always ride on the back seat prop­
erly restrained for the ir age and s ize .
- Always install fo rward or rear-facing child
safety seats on the rear seat -even with an
Advanced Airbag System.
- If you must install a rearward-facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
appear and stay on, immediately install the rear-facing chi ld safety seat in a rea r seat ing
position and have the a irbag sys tem in­
spected by your autho rized Aud i dea ler.
- A t igh t tether or other strap on a rearward­
facing chi ld restraint attached to the front
passenger sea t can put too much pressure

Using the proper engine oil is important for the
functionality and service life of the engine. Your
engine was factory-filled with a high-quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
year .
Note
Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended maintenance and use
requirements as set fo rth in the Aud i Owner's
Manual a nd Warranty & Mai ntenan ce booklet.
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil that ex-
pressly complies with the Aud i oil q ual ity
standard specified for your vehicle's engine. Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage .
- Do not mix any l ubricants or othe r addi tives
into the engine oil. Doing so can cause en­
gine damage.
(D Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa­
ble that meets the Audi oil quality standard
your engine requires, you may add a total of
no more than 0 .5 quart/liter of a high-quality
"synthet ic"oil that meets the following speci­
fications.
- ACEA A3 or API SM with a viscosity grade of
SAE OW-30, SAE SW-30 or SAE SW-40.

Ch eck ing and Filling
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on on ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and
cool oil of
its moving ports.
In order to provide effect ive lubrication and cool­
ing of internal engine components, all internal
combust ion eng ines consume a certa in amount
of oil. Oil consumption varies from eng ine to en­
gine and may change s ign ificantly over the life of
the engine. Typ ica lly, engines w ith a specified
break-in period (see
q page 58) consume more
oi l during the break -in period than they consume
after oil consumption has stabilized.
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on the q uality and viscosity o f
the oil, the RPM (revol utions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient tem­ perature and road condit ions. Further factors are
the amount of oil dilution from water condensa­
tion or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the o il. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time unt il replacement of worn components may
become necessary.
With all these variables coming into play, no standard rate of o il consumption can be estab­
li shed or spec ified . T he re is no alte rnative to reg­
u la r and frequent checking of the oi l level , see
Note .

check the o il level as soon as possible
