Stopping/starting the engine

• Brake the ve hicle to a stop. The engine stops
shortly before the vehicle comes to a stop or if
the vehicle is stationary

[IJ indicator light appears
in the information line at the bottom of the in­
strument cluster display. The needle in the
tachometer also moves into the
RE ADV1> posi­
tion .
• The eng ine starts again when you take your
foot off the b rake pedal. The indicator light
turns off.
Add itional informat ion
The engine stops in the P, N and D selector lever
positions .
If you select the R position dur ing a stop phase,
the engine will start again.
Shift to P quick ly to prevent the engine from
starting unintent ionally when shifting through R.
You can determ ine fo r you rself if the engine will
stop or not by reducing or increasing the amo unt
of force you use to press the brake pedal. For ex­
ample, if you only lightly press on the brake ped­
al in stop-and-go traff ic or when turning, the en­
g ine will not switch off when the vehicle is sta­
tionary. As soon as you press the brake down
harder , the eng ine will switch off .

General information

The standard Start/Stop mode con be canceled
for various system-related reasons.
Engine do es not switch off
Before and dur ing each stop phase, the sys tem
checks if certain conditions have been met.
If the
rjJ indicator light appears in the instrument clus­
ter display, the eng ine will not be stopped, for
example in the following situat ions:
- The engine has not reached the minim um re­
quired temperature for Start/Stop mode.
- The interior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- The outside tempe ra tu re is extremely high/low.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted® .
- The parking system* is be switched on .
- The vehicle battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is turned at a sharp angle or
is moving.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp inclines.
Engine automatically restarts
The standard S tart/Stop mode w ill be canceled
d uring a stop p hase in the following si tuations.
The eng ine restarts without any action by the
driver.
- The vehicle ro lls, fo r example while on a slope .
- The inte rior tempe rature differs from the tem-
pe rat ure selected in the A/C system.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted® .
- The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row .

The engine can turn off again when the condi­
tions fo r Start-S top mode a re met .
Ignition i s switched off automatically
To prevent the veh icle battery from draining, the
ignit ion will sw itch off
automaticall y under the
following conditions :
- The vehicle must have already been driven.
- The Start/Stop system has stopped the engine.
- T he driver's door must be open.
- The driver's safe ty be lt must be unb uck led.
- The brake pedal must not be p ressed .
- The veh icle must be stationary .
In this case, the activated low beam is replaced by the parking light. The parking lights will
switch off after app roximately 30 minutes or
when yo u lock the vehicle .
If the Start/Stop system has not turned off the
engine or if you have sw itched the Start/Stop sys­
tem off manually, the ignition will not be auto­ mat ical ly switched off and the engine w ill contin ­
ue to run~&. .
A WARNING
To red uce the r isk of poisoning, never allow
t he engine to r un in conf ined s paces.
@ Tips
If you select the Dor N se lector lever position
after sh ifting into reverse, the vehicle m ust
be driven f ast er than 6 mph (10 km/ h) in or­
der fo r th e engine to switch off ag ain.

.. Pull the(®) switch to set the parking brake. The
LED in the switch illuminates. The -(USA
models)/ . (Canada models) indicator light al­
so turns on in the instrument cluster display .
.. To release the parking brake manua lly, press
the brake o r acce lerato r pedal while the igni­
tion is switched on a nd p ress the®> switch at
the same time. The L ED in the b utton and the
indicator light in the display t urn off.
Releasing the parking brake automatically
Req uirement: the driver's door must be closed,
the dr iver's safety belt must be la tched and the
pa rking brake must be set.

Preventing the automatic parking br ake
release
The vehicle could begin ro lling unintentionally,
depending on the hill or if towing a trailer.

.. To prevent the park ing brake from releasing au­
tomatically, pull and ho ld the<®> switch and
press the acce lerator peda l. The parking brake
remains set and prevents the vehicle from roll­
ing backward.
" You can release the®) switch again once you
are sure that yo u are giving enough driving
force to the wheels by press ing the accelerator
pedal.
Eme rgency braking function
You can use the emergency braking function in an
emergency sit uation, or if the standa rd brake op­
eration malfunctions or is disab led.
" Pull and ho ld the®) switch.
" As soon as you release the ®> switch or acceler-
ate, the braking stops.
Pul ling and ho ld ing the®> switch while driving
the vehicle activates the emergency braking func­
tion. The ve hicle is braked at all four wheels by
activating the hydraulic brake system . The brak­
i ng effect is sim ila r to heavy brak ing

To reduce the risk of activating the emergency
braking by m istake, a warning tone (buzzer)
sounds when the© switch is pulled. Emergency
braking stops as soon as the© switch is released
o r the accelerator pedal is pressed.
Park ing

" Pull the© switch to set the parking brake .
" Place the selector leve r in t he P position .

erwise, the vehicle will start to move imme­
diate ly and this could result i n an accident .
- Emergency braking sho uld only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l brake pedal
has fai led or the brake peda l is obstr ucted. "'

Driving
-Hill hold assist cannot hold the veh icle in
place on all h ills (for example, if the ground
is slippery or icy).
- To reduce the risk of an accident, always
make sure the vehicle is situated safely
wh ile stat ionary.
Automatic transmission
Introduction
The automat ic tra nsmission is cont rolled e lec­
tronically . The transmission sh ifts up or down au­
tomatically depending on which drive program is
selected.
Whe n a
mod erate dri ving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving
mode. The transmiss ion upshifts at a lower RPM
and downshifts at a higher RPM to improve fuel
efficiency.
The transm ission switches to a spo rty mode after
a kick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rt y
driving style
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually ( tipt ronic mod e) 9 page 79.

The S tronic is a dual-clutch t ransmiss ion . Power
is transferred using two clutches that work inde­
pendently from one another. They replace the
torque converter used in conventional automatic transmissions and allow the vehicle to accelerate
without a noticeable inter ruption in tract ion .

The selector lever position that is engaged is

P -Park
This selector lever position prevents the vehicle
from ro lling. You can only shift into Park when
the veh icle is
stationary 9 ,1. .
To sh ift in and out of the P selecto r lever posi­
tion, press the interlock button in the selector
l ever
while pressing the brake pedal. This only
works when the ignition is turned on.
R- Reverse
Only s hif t into reverse gear w hen the veh icle is
stationary and the engine is running at idle
speed ~

To se lect the R sele ctor leve r position, press the
interlock button
while pressing the brake pedal
at the same time. The back -up lights switch on in
the R position if the ignition is switched on .
N -Neutral

DIS -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S se lector lever position, the transmis ­
s io n can be operated e ither in the normal D mode
o r in the S sport mode . To select th e S sport
mode, pull the selector leve r back br iefly . P ull ing
the leve r back ag ai n will sele ct the normal D
mode. The ins trument cluster display shows the
selected driving mode .

Interlock button
The in terlo ck button in the selector leve r handle
p revents you from moving the se lector lever i n­
adve rtently while in some se lector lever posi ­
tions. The positions that require the interlock
button to be pressed are marked in co lor in the il­

Driving tips
Starting the engine
• The selector lever must be in the P or the N po­
s ition.
Starting from a stop
• Press and hold the brake pedal.
• Press and hold the lock button in the selector
lever hand le, select the desired se lector lever
position such as 0/5 and release the lock but­
ton.
• Wait a moment u ntil the transmission shifts .
You w ill not ice a slight moveme nt when the
gear engages .
• Release t he b rake pedal and press the accelera­
tor pedal ¢& .
Stopp ing temporarily
• Keep the veh icle stationary us ing the braking
pedal, for example at traffic lights .
• Do not p ress the accelerator pedal when doing
th is.
• To preve nt the vehicle from rolling w hen you
sta rt d riving, se t the par king brake w hen stop­
ping on steep inclines¢&, .
• The park ing brake w ill release automatically
and the vehicle wi ll start moving once you press
the accelerator pedal.
Stopping /parking
If the se lec tor lever is not in the P posit io n when
you open the driver's door, the vehicle could rol l.
The message

U nder cert ain circumst ances, such as d riving in
t h e mo unta ins, it may be useful to swi tch tempo ­
rarily to the man ual sh ift program in order to
manua lly adjust the gears to the driving condi­
tions

On inc lines, activate the parking brake f irs t and
then move the selector lever to the P position

page 74. This prevents the locking mechanism
from be ing loaded too heavily and will make it
easier to move the selector lever out of the P po­
s ition.
A WARNING
-
- The vehicle can roll even if the ignit io n is
sw itched off.
- Never leave your veh icle with the engine
r u nning while in gear .
- Do not press the acce le rato r pedal when
changing t he selec tor lever posit ion while
the vehicle is s tat ionary and the engine is
r u nning.
- Please note that a small amount of power is
tra nsmi tted if the vehicle is stoppe d tem po­
rari ly wh ile in the D/S or R sele ctor leve r po­
sitio n. T o reduce the ris k of an ac cident, you
m ust c ontin ue pressing firm ly on the brake
pe dal while the ve hicle is stopped so that it
does not roll.
- Never engage the R or P selector level pos i­
tion s while dr iving. It could ca use a crash .
- Before driving down a s teep slope, redu ce
your speed and sh ift into a lower gear w ith
"t i p tronic" .
- Do not ri de the brakes or press the brake
pe dal too often or too long when dr iv ing
downhill . Constant braking causes t he
brakes to ove rheat and substant ia lly re­
duces brak ing performance, increases brak­
ing d istance or causes comp lete failure of
the bra ke system.
- If you must stop on an incline, always hold
the vehicle in place w it h the foot brake or
parking bra ke to p revent it from rolling
back .

-Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload . The

- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
hold the vehicle in place by pressing the ac­
celerator pedal while a driving gear is se­
l ected. This can cause the transmission to
overheat and can damage it. Set the parking
brake or press the brake pedal to prevent
the vehicle from rolling.
- Allow ing the vehicle to roll when the engine
is stopped will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is fastened.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down hills .
Hill descent contro l is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in the Dor S position and you press
the brake pedal. The transmission automatically
selects a gear that is suitable for the hill. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical and
technical limitations. If may still be necessary to adjust the speed with the brake pedal.
Hill descent control switches off once the hill lev­
els out or you press the accelerator pedal.
On vehicles with a cruise control system*
¢ page 85, hill descent control is also activated
when the speed is set.
_& WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain

a constant speed under all conditions. Always be ready to apply the brakes.
Shifting manually (tiptronic mode)
The tiptronic mode allows the driver to shi~ the
gears manually .

You can shift into tiptronic mode while stationary
and while driving.

Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerato r peda l down be­
yond the resistance point, the automatic trans­
miss io n downshifts into a lower gear, depend ing
on vehicle speed and engine RPM. It shif ts up in­
to the next higher gear once the max imum speci­
fied engine RPM is reached .
I n t iptroni c mode, the t ransmission does
not au­
tomatically sh ift down into a lowe r gear. If you
m ust accelerate, for example to pass a veh icle,
you must shift manually .

Please note that the wheels could spin on
slick or slippery roads when kick-down is ac­
tive.
Overboost
Applies to: RS 7 Spo rtback perfor man ce

The max imum engine torque is temporar ily in­
creased in overboost. Overboost is activated
when nearing full throttle in the S position and
when the engine is at operat ing temperatu re .
The bars in the boost p ressure indicator are red

Requirement: the engine must be at operating
temperature and the steering wheel must not be
turned .

not be ava ilab le for a few minutes. It will be
available again after a coo l-down period.

Transmission malfunction

Press the brake pedal and se lect the desired se­
lector lever posit ion aga in. You can then continue
driving.
ml Transm ission o verheat ing : Please dri ve con­
ser vat ively .
The transm ission temperature has increased s ig ­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. D rive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of .
ml Transmission malfunction: You can continue
dri ving
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis ­
sion . Yo u may continue driving. Drive to your au ­
thor ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
F acility soon to have the ma lfunction corrected.
ml Transm ission m alfun ction: You can continue
dri ving with limited functionality
There is a system malfunction in the t ransm is­
sion . T he transmission is sw itching to emergency
mode. This mode only sh ifts in to certa in gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall. D rive to an authorized Audi dea ler or authorized
Aud i Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected.
