TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS
Symptom When Error Occurs in CAN Communication System
INFOID:0000000012433334
In CAN communication system, multiple control units mutually transmit and receive signals. Each control unit
cannot transmit and receive signals if any error occurs on CAN communication line. Under this condition, mul-
tiple control units related to the root cause malfunction or go into fail-safe mode.
ERROR EXAMPLE
NOTE:
Each vehicle differs in symptom of each control unit under fail-safe mode and CAN communication line wiring.
Example: Main Line Between Data Link Connector and ABS Actuator and Electric Un it (Control Unit) Open Circuit
JSMIA0442GB
Unit name Major symptom
ECM Engine torque limiting is affected, and shift harshness increases.
BCM • Reverse warning buzzer does not sound.
• The front wiper moves under continuous operation mode even though the front wip-
er switch being in the intermittent position.
EPS control unit The steering effort increases.
Combination meter • The shift position indicator and OD OFF indicator turn OFF.
• The speedometer is inoperative.
• The odo/trip meter stops.
ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit) Normal operation.
TCM No impact on operation.
IPDM E/R When the ignition switch is ON,
• The headlamps (Lo) turn ON.
• The cooling fan continues to rotate.

• When a CAN communication system error is present, multiple control units may malfunction or go into fail-
safe mode.
• Indication of the combination meter is important to detect the root cause because it is the most obvious to
the customer, and it performs CAN communication with many units.
>> GO TO 2.
2.INSPECTION OF VEHICLE CONDITION
Check whether the symptom is reproduced or not.
NOTE:
Do not turn the ignition switch OFF or disconnect the 12V battery cable while reproducing the error. The error
may temporarily correct itself, making it difficult to determine the root cause.
>> GO TO 3.
3.CHECK OF CAN SYSTEM TYPE (H OW TO USE CAN SYSTEM TYPE SPECIFICATION CHART)
Determine CAN system type based on vehicle equipment.
NOTE:
• This chart is used if CONSULT does not automatically recognize CAN system type.
• There are two styles for CAN system type specification charts. Depending on the number of available sys- tem types, either style A or style B may be used.
• CAN System Type Specification Chart (Style A) NOTE:

HARNESS CONNECTOR (LEVER LOCKING TYPE)
• Lever locking type harness connectors are used on certain control units and control modules such as ECM,
ABS actuator and electric unit (control unit), etc.
• Lever locking type harness connectors are also us ed on super multiple junction (SMJ) connectors.
• Always confirm the lever is fully locked in place by mo ving the lever as far as it will go to ensure full connec-

ECM RE-COMMUNICATING FUNCTION
ECM RE-COMMUNICATING FUNCTION : DescriptionINFOID:0000000012430463
Performing following procedure can automatically per
form re-communication of ECM and BCM, but only when
the ECM has been replaced with a new one (*1).
*1: New one means an ECM which has never been energized on-board.
(In this step, initialization procedure by CONSULT is not necessary)
NOTE:
• When registering new Key IDs or replacing the ECM that is not brand new, refer to CONSULT Immo-
bilizer mode and follow th e on-screen instructions.
• If multiple keys are attached to the key holder, separate them before work.
• Distinguish keys with unregistered key ID from those with registered ID.
ECM RE-COMMUNICATING FUNCTION : Special Repair RequirementINFOID:0000000012430464
1.PERFORM ECM RE-COMMUNICATING FUNCTION
1. Install ECM.
2. Using a registered key (*2), turn ignition switch to “ON”. *2: To perform this step, use the key that has been used before performing ECM replacement.
3. Maintain ignition switch in “ON” position for at least 5 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch to “OFF”.
5. Start engine.
Can engine be started?
YES >> Procedure is completed.
NO >> Initialize control unit. Refer to CONSULT Immobilizer mode and follow the on-screen instructions.

Front Side Air Bag ModuleINFOID:0000000012430592
Front side air bag modules are built into the front seatback assem-
blies. Vehicles with side air bags are equipped with labels as shown.
Side Curtain Air Bag ModuleINFOID:0000000012430593
Side curtain air bag modules are located above the vehicle headlin-

the pillar upper finishers.
Front Seat Belt Pre-tensionerINFOID:0000000012430594
The seat belt pre-tensioner system with load limiter is installed for
both the driver's seat and the fr ont passenger's seat. It operates
simultaneously with the SRS air bag system in the event of a frontal
collision with an impact exceeding a specified level.
When the frontal collision with an im pact exceeding a specified level
occurs, seat belt slack resulting from clothing or other factors is
immediately taken up by the belt pre-tensioner. Vehicle passengers
are securely restrained.
When passengers in a vehicle are thrown forward in a collision and
the restraining force of the seat belt exceeds a specified level, the
load limiter permits the specified ex tension of the seat belt by the
twisting of the ELR shaft, and a relaxation of the chest-area seat belt
web tension while maintaining force.
Air Bag Diagnosis Sensor UnitINFOID:0000000012430595
The air bag diagnosis sensor unit is located under the center con-
sole assembly. The air bag diagnosis sensor unit receives signals
from multiple SRS sensors and cont rols the deployment of the air
bags. The deployment of the air bags depends on the type and
severity of the collision. The air bag diagnosis sensor unit has self-
diagnosis capability through the us e of the CONSULT as well as
flash codes displayed by the air bag warning lamp.

DescriptionINFOID:0000000012430674
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication system for real time application. It is an on-vehicle
multiplex communication system with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability.
Many electronic control units are equipped into vehicl es, and each control unit shares information and links
with other control units during operation. With CAN co mmunication, control units are connected with two com-
munication lines (CAN-H line, CAN-L line) allowing a hi gh rate of information transmission with less wiring.
Each control unit transmits and receives data but selectively reads required data only. Refer to LAN-30, "

EPS CONTROL UNIT
Protection Function
INFOID:0000000012431947
EPS control unit decreases the output signal to EPS mo tor while extremely using the power steering function
(e.g., full steering) consecutively for protecting EPS motor and EPS control unit (Overload protection control).
While activating overload protection control, the assist torque gradually decreases, and the steering wheel
turning force becomes heavy. The normal assist torque reactivates by no steering.
