Child restraint anchorages arede-

child restraint anchorages. Thechild
restraint willnotbeproperly installed
using thedamaged anchorage, anda
child could beseriously injuredorkilled in
acollision.
The child restraint toptether strapmustbeused
when installing thechild restraint withtheseat
belts.
First, secure thechild restraint withtheseat belt.
1. Remove thehead restraint andstore itin a
secure place.Besure toreinstall thehead
restraint whenthechild restraint isremoved
(rear outboard seatpositions) .

P osition thetop tether strapoverthetop of
the seatback.
2. Secure thetop tether straptothe tether
anchor pointonthe back ofthe seatback
behind thechild restraint.
3. Refer tothe appropriate childrestraint
installation procedurestepsinthis section
before tightening thetether strap.

Follow thesestepstoinstall abooster seatinthe
rear seat orinthe front passenger seat:

1. Ifyou must install abooster seatinthe
front seat,move theseat tothe rear-
most position.
2. Position thebooster seatonthe seat. Only
place itin aforward-facing direction.Always
follow thebooster seatmanufacturer's
instructions.

3. The booster seatshould bepositioned on
the vehicle seatsothat itis stable.
If necessary ,adjust orremove thehead
restraint toobtain thecorrect booster seat
fit. Ifthe head restraint isremoved, storeitin
a secure place.Besure toreinstall the
head restraint whenthebooster seatis
removed. SeeªHead restraints/headrestsº
(P .1-5) forhead restraint adjustment, re-
moval andinstallation information.
If the seating position doesnothave ahead
restraint anditis interfering withtheproper
booster seatfit,try another seatingposition
or adifferent boosterseat.

for the most effective protection bythe seat belt
and supplemental airbag.
NISSAN recommends thatpre-teens andchil-
dren beproperly restrained inarear seat.
NISSAN alsorecommends thatappropriate
child restraints andbooster seatsbeproperly
installed inarear seat. Ifthis isnot possible, the
occupant classification sensorsaredesigned to
operate asdescribed abovetoturn thefront
passenger airbag OFF forspecified child
restraints. Failingtoproperly securechild
restraints andtouse theAutomatic Locking
Retractor (ALR)mode(childrestraint mode)
may allow therestraint totip ormove inan
accident orsudden stop.Thiscanalso result in
the passenger airbag inflating inacrash instead
of being OFF.(See ªChild restraintsº (P.1-18)
for proper useand installation.)
If the front passenger seatisnot occupied, the
passenger airbag isdesigned nottoinflate ina
crash. However, heavyobjects placedonthe
seat could resultinair bag inflation, because of
the object beingdetected bythe occupant
classification sensors.Otherconditions could
also result inair bag inflation, suchasifa child is
standing onthe seat, oriftwo children areonthe
seat, contrary tothe instructions inthis manual.
Always besure thatyouand allvehicle
occupants areseated andrestrained properly.Using
thepassenger airbag status light,youcan
monitor whenthefront passenger airbag is
automatically turnedOFFwiththeseat occu-
pied. Thelight willnotilluminate whenthefront
passenger seatisunoccupied.
If an adult occupant isin the seat butthe
passenger airbag status lightisilluminated
(indicating thattheairbag isOFF) ,it could be
that theperson isasmall adult, orisnot sitting
on the seat properly .
If achild restraint mustbeused inthe front seat,
the passenger airbag status lightmayormay
not beilluminated, dependingonthe size ofthe
child andthetype ofchild restraint beingused.If
the airbag status lightisnot illuminated
(indicating thattheairbag might inflate ina
crash) ,it could bethat thechild restraint orseat
belt isnot being usedproperly .Make surethat
the child restraint isinstalled properly,the seat
belt isused properly andtheoccupant is
positioned properly.If the airbag status lightis
not illuminated, repositiontheoccupant orchild
restraint inarear seat.
If the passenger airbag status lightwillnot
illuminate eventhough youbelieve thatthechild
restraint, theseat belts andtheoccupant are
properly positioned, thesystem maybesensing
an unoccupied seat(inwhich casetheairbag is
OFF) .Your NISSAN dealercancheck thatthe system
isOFF byusing aspecial tool.However,
until youhave confirmed withyour dealer that
your airbag isworking properly,reposition the
occupant orchild restraint inarear seat.
The airbag system andpassenger airbag status
light willtake afew seconds toregister achange
in the passenger seatstatus. However, ifthe
seat becomes unoccupied, theairbag status
light willremain off.
If amalfunction occursinthe front passenger air
bag system, thesupplemental airbag warning
light
, located inthe meter andgauges area,
will blink. Havethesystem checked bya
NISSAN dealer.

The side airbags arelocated inthe outside of
the seatback ofthe front seats. Thecurtain air
bags arelocated inthe side roofrails. Allofthe
information, cautionsandwarnings inthis
manual applyandmust befollowed. The
side airbags andcurtain airbags aredesigned
to inflate inhigher severity sidecollisions,
although theymayinflate ifthe forces inanother
type ofcollision aresimilar tothose ofahigher
severity sideimpact. Theyaredesigned toinflate on
the side where thevehicle isimpacted. They
may notinflate incertain sidecollisions.
V ehicle damage (orlack ofit) isnot always an
indication ofproper sideairbag andcurtain air
bag operation.
When theside airbags andcurtain airbags
inflate, afairly loudnoise maybeheard, followed
by release ofsmoke. Thissmoke isnot harmful
and does notindicate afire. Care should be
taken nottoinhale it,as itmay cause irritation
and choking. Thosewithahistory ofabreathing
condition shouldgetfresh airpromptly .
Side airbags, along withtheuse ofseat belts,
help tocushion theimpact forceonthe chest
and pelvic areaofthe front occupants. Curtain
air bags helptocushion theimpact forcetothe
head ofoccupants inthe front andrear outboard
seating positions. Theycanhelp save livesand
reduce serious injuries. However, aninflating
side airbag orcurtain airbag may cause
abrasions orother injuries. Sideairbags and
curtain airbags donot provide restraint tothe
lower body.
The seat belts should becorrectly wornandthe
driver andpassenger seatedupright asfar as
practical awayfromtheside airbags. Rearseat
passengers shouldbeseated asfar away as
practical fromthedoor finishers andside roof

indicate theelectric powersteering systemis
not functioning properlyandmay need servicing.
Have theelectric powersteering system
checked byaNISSAN dealer.
When theelectric powersteering warninglight
illuminates withtheengine running, thepower
assist tothe steering willcease operation but
you willstill have control ofthe vehicle. Atthis
time, greater steering effortsarerequired to
operate thesteering wheel,especially insharp
turns andatlow speeds.

Engine oilpressure warninglight

light flickers orilluminates duringnormal driving,

not designed toindicate alow oillevel.
Use thedipstick tocheck theoillevel. (See
ªEngine oilº(P.8-8) .)
CAUTION
Running theengine withtheengine oil
pressure warninglightoncould cause
serious damage tothe engine almost
immediately. Suchdamage isnot cov-
ered bywarranty. Turn offthe engine as
soon asitis safe todo so.
