Supplemental front-impactairbag system:
The NISSAN Advanced AirBag System can
help cushion theimpact forcetothe head and
chest ofthe driver andfront passenger incertain
frontal collisions.
Front seat-mounted side-impactsupple-
mental airbag system: Thissystem canhelp
cushion theimpact forcetothe chest andpelvic
area ofthe driver andfront passenger incertain
side impact collisions. Theside airbag is
designed toinflate onthe side where thevehicle
is impacted.
Roof-mounted curtainside-impact supple-
mental airbag system: Thissystem canhelp
cushion theimpact forcetothe head ofoccupants
infront andrear outboard seating
positions incertain sideimpact collisions. The
curtain airbags aredesigned toinflate onthe
side where thevehicle isimpacted.
These supplemental restraintsystems arede-
signed tosupplement thecrash protection
provided bythe driver andpassenger seatbelts
and arenot asubstitute forthem. Seatbelts
should always becorrectly wornandthe
occupant seatedasuitable distance awayfrom
the steering wheel,instrument panelanddoor
finishers. (SeeªSeat beltsº (P.1-10) forinstruc-
tions andprecautions onseat beltusage.)
The supplemental airbags operate only
when theignition switchisin the ON
position.
After theignition isplaced inthe ON
position, thesupplemental airbag warning
light illuminates. Thesupplemental airbag
warning lightwillturn offafter about 7
seconds ifthe systems areoperational.

. Until youhave confirmed withyour
dealer thatyour passenger seat
occupant classification systemis
working properly, positiontheoccu-
pants inthe rear seating positions.
This vehicle isequipped withtheNISSAN
Advanced AirBag System forthe driver and
front passenger seats.Thissystem isdesigned
to meet certification requirements underU.S.
regulations. Itis also permitted inCanada. Allof
the information, cautionsandwarnings in
this manual applyandmust befollowed.
The driver supplemental front-impactairbag is
located inthe center ofthe steering wheel.The
passenger supplemental front-impactairbag is
mounted inthe instrument panelabove theglove
box. Thefront airbags aredesigned toinflate in
higher severity frontalcollisions, althoughthey
may inflate ifthe forces inanother typeof
collision aresimilar tothose ofahigher severity
frontal impact. Theymaynotinflate incertain
frontal collisions. Vehicle damage (orlack ofit) is
not always anindication ofproper frontairbag
operation.
The NISSAN Advanced AirBag System has
dual stage airbag inflators. Thesystem monitors
information fromtheAirbag Control Unit(ACU) ,
seat beltbuckle sensors andtheoccupant classification
sensors(weightsensors) .Inflator
operation isbased onthe severity ofacollision
and seat beltusage forthe driver. Forthefront
passenger, theoccupant classification sensors
are also monitored. Basedoninformation from
the sensors, onlyonefront airbag may inflate in
a crash, depending onthe crash severity and
whether thefront occupants arebelted or
unbelted. Additionally ,the front passenger air
bag may beautomatically turnedOFFunder
some conditions, dependingonthe information
provided bythe occupant classification sensors.
If the front passenger airbag isOFF ,the
passenger airbag status lightwillbeilluminated
(if the seat isunoccupied, thelight willnot be
illuminated, buttheairbag willbeoff).(See
ªFront passenger airbag andstatus lightº(P.1-
46) forfurther details.) Onefront airbag inflating
does notindicate improper performance ofthe
system.

When afront airbag inflates, afairly loudnoise
may beheard, followed byrelease ofsmoke.
This smoke isnot harmful anddoes notindicate
a fire. Care should betaken nottoinhale it,as it may
cause irritation andchoking. Thosewitha
history ofabreathing conditionshouldgetfresh
air promptly .
Front airbags, along withtheuse ofseat belts,
help tocushion theimpact forceonthe head
and chest ofthe front occupants. Theycanhelp
save livesandreduce serious injuries. However,
an inflating frontairbag may cause facial
abrasions orother injuries. Frontairbags do
not provide restraint tothe lower body.
Even withNISSAN Advanced AirBags, seat
belts should becorrectly wornandthedriver
and passenger seatedupright asfar aspractical
away fromthesteering wheelorinstrument
panel. Thefront airbags inflate quickly inorder
to help protect thefront occupants. Becauseof
this, theforce ofthe front airbag inflating can
increase therisk ofinjury ifthe occupant istoo
close to,orisagainst, theairbag module during
inflation.
The front airbags deflate quickly afteracollision.
The front airbags operate onlywhen the
ignition switchisin the ONposition.
After theignition isplaced inthe ON
position, thesupplemental airbag warning
light illuminates. Thesupplemental airbag
warning lightwillturn offafter about 7
seconds ifthe system isoperational.

conditions. Readthissection carefully
to learn howitoperates. Properuseof

Failure tofollow allinstructions inthis
manual concerning theuse ofseats,
seat belts andchild restraints can
increase therisk orseverity ofinjury in an
accident.

The front passenger airbag status light
is
located onthe instrument panel.Afterthe
ignition switchisplaced inthe "ON" position,
the front passenger airbag status lightillumi-
nates forabout 7seconds andthen turns offor
illuminates depending onthe front passenger
seat occupied status.Thelight operates as
follows:
. Unoccupied passengerseat:The
light
is OFF andthefront passenger airbag is
OFF andwillnot inflate inacrash.
. Passenger's seatoccupied byasmall adult,
child orchild restraint asoutlined inthis
section: The
light illuminates toindicate
that thefront passenger airbag isOFF and
will notinflate inacrash.
. Occupied passenger seatandthepassen-
ger meets theconditions outlinedinthis
section: The
light isOFF toindicate that
the front passenger airbag isoperational.

The front passenger airbag isdesigned to
automatically turnOFF when thevehicle is
operated undersomeconditions asdescribed
below aspermitted byU.S. regulations. Ifthe front
passenger airbag isOFF ,it will notinflate
in acrash. Thedriver airbag andother airbags
in your vehicle arenot part ofthis system.
The purpose ofthe regulation isto help reduce
the risk ofinjury ordeath fromaninflating airbag
to certain frontpassenger seatoccupants, such
as children, byrequiring theairbag tobe
automatically turnedOFF.
The occupant classification sensors(weight
sensors) areonthe seat cushion frameunder
the front passenger seatandaredesigned to
detect anoccupant andobjects onthe seat. For
example, ifa child isin the front passenger seat,
the Advanced AirBag System isdesigned to
turn thepassenger airbag OFF inaccordance
with theregulations. Also,ifa child restraint of
the type specified inthe regulations ison the
seat, theoccupant classification sensorscan
detect itand cause theairbag toturn OFF.
Front passenger seatadult occupants whoare
properly seatedandusing theseat beltas
outlined inthis manual shouldnotcause the
passenger airbag tobe automatically turned
OFF .For small adults itmay beturned OFF,
however, ifthe occupant doesnotsitinthe seat
properly (forexample, bynot sitting upright, by
sitting onanedge ofthe seat, orby otherwise
being outofposition) ,this could cause the
sensors toturn theairbag OFF.Always besure

to be seated andwearing theseat beltproperly
for the most effective protection bythe seat belt
and supplemental airbag.
NISSAN recommends thatpre-teens andchil-
dren beproperly restrained inarear seat.
NISSAN alsorecommends thatappropriate
child restraints andbooster seatsbeproperly
installed inarear seat. Ifthis isnot possible, the
occupant classification sensorsaredesigned to
operate asdescribed abovetoturn thefront
passenger airbag OFF forspecified child
restraints. Failingtoproperly securechild
restraints andtouse theAutomatic Locking
Retractor (ALR)mode(childrestraint mode)
may allow therestraint totip ormove inan
accident orsudden stop.Thiscanalso result in
the passenger airbag inflating inacrash instead
of being OFF.(See ªChild restraintsº (P.1-18)
for proper useand installation.)
If the front passenger seatisnot occupied, the
passenger airbag isdesigned nottoinflate ina
crash. However, heavyobjects placedonthe
seat could resultinair bag inflation, because of
the object beingdetected bythe occupant
classification sensors.Otherconditions could
also result inair bag inflation, suchasifa child is
standing onthe seat, oriftwo children areonthe
seat, contrary tothe instructions inthis manual.
Always besure thatyouand allvehicle
occupants areseated andrestrained properly.Using
thepassenger airbag status light,youcan
monitor whenthefront passenger airbag is
automatically turnedOFFwiththeseat occu-
pied. Thelight willnotilluminate whenthefront
passenger seatisunoccupied.
If an adult occupant isin the seat butthe
passenger airbag status lightisilluminated
(indicating thattheairbag isOFF) ,it could be
that theperson isasmall adult, orisnot sitting
on the seat properly .
If achild restraint mustbeused inthe front seat,
the passenger airbag status lightmayormay
not beilluminated, dependingonthe size ofthe
child andthetype ofchild restraint beingused.If
the airbag status lightisnot illuminated
(indicating thattheairbag might inflate ina
crash) ,it could bethat thechild restraint orseat
belt isnot being usedproperly .Make surethat
the child restraint isinstalled properly,the seat
belt isused properly andtheoccupant is
positioned properly.If the airbag status lightis
not illuminated, repositiontheoccupant orchild
restraint inarear seat.
If the passenger airbag status lightwillnot
illuminate eventhough youbelieve thatthechild
restraint, theseat belts andtheoccupant are
properly positioned, thesystem maybesensing
an unoccupied seat(inwhich casetheairbag is
OFF) .Your NISSAN dealercancheck thatthe system
isOFF byusing aspecial tool.However,
until youhave confirmed withyour dealer that
your airbag isworking properly,reposition the
occupant orchild restraint inarear seat.
The airbag system andpassenger airbag status
light willtake afew seconds toregister achange
in the passenger seatstatus. However, ifthe
seat becomes unoccupied, theairbag status
light willremain off.
If amalfunction occursinthe front passenger air
bag system, thesupplemental airbag warning
light
, located inthe meter andgauges area,
will blink. Havethesystem checked bya
NISSAN dealer.

. Do not place anyobjects onthe

. Do not place objects withsharp
edges onthe seat. Also, donot
place heavy objects onthe seat that
will leave permanent impressions in
the seat. Such objects candamage
the seat oroccupant classification
sensors (weightsensors) .This can
affect theoperation ofthe airbag
system andresult inserious perso-
nal injury.
. Do not use water oracidic cleaners
(hot steam cleaners) onthe seat.
This candamage theseat oroccu-
pant classification sensors.Thiscan
also affect theoperation ofthe air
bag system andresult inserious
personal injury.
. Immediately afterinflation, several
front airbag system components
will behot. Donot touch them; you
may severely burnyourself.
. Nounauthorized changesshouldbe
made toany components orwiring
of the supplemental airbag system.
This isto prevent accidental infla-
tion ofthe supplemental airbag or
damage tothe supplemental airbag
system. .
Do not make unauthorized changes
to your vehicle's electrical system,
suspension systemorfront end
structure. Thiscould affect proper
operation ofthe front airbag sys-
tem.
. Tampering withthefront airbag
system mayresult inserious perso-
nal injury. Tampering includes
changes tothe steering wheeland
the instrument panelassembly by
placing material overthesteering
wheel padand above theinstrument
panel orby installing additional trim
material aroundtheairbag system.
. Removing ormodifying thefront
passenger seatmayaffect thefunc-
tion ofthe airbag system andresult
in serious personal injury.
. Modifying ortampering withthe
front passenger seatmayresult in
serious personal injury.Forexam-
ple, donot change thefront seats by
placing material onthe seat cushion
or by installing additional trimma-
terial, suchasseat covers, onthe
seat thatisnot specifically designed
to assure properairbag operation.
Additionally, donot stow anyob- jects
under thefront passenger seat
or the seat cushion andseatback.
Such objects mayinterfere withthe
proper operation ofthe occupant
classification sensors.
. Nounauthorized changesshouldbe
made toany components orwiring
of the seat beltsystem. Thismay
affect thefront airbag system.
T ampering withtheseat beltsystem
may result inserious personal in-
jury.
. Work onand around thefront air
bag system shouldbedone bya
NISSAN dealer.Installation ofelec-
trical equipment shouldalsobe
done byaNISSAN dealer.The

(SRS) wiring harnesses* shouldnot
be modified ordisconnected. Un-
authorized electricaltestequipment
and probing devicesshouldnotbe
used onthe airbag system.
. Acracked windshield shouldbe
replaced immediately byaqualified
repair facility. Acracked windshield
could affect thefunction ofthe
supplemental airbag system.
