Safety ÐSeats, seatbelts andsupplement alrestraint system
of movement inthe seat. TheELR locks theseat
belt when thevehicle slowsdownrapidly or
during certain impacts.
The Automatic LockingRetractor (ALR)mode
(child restraint mode)lockstheseat beltfor
child restraint installation.
When ALRmode isactivated theseat belt
cannot beextended againuntiltheseat belt
tongue isdetached fromthebuckle andfully
retracted. Theseat beltreturns tothe ELR mode
after theseat beltfully retracts. Foradditional
information, seeªChild restraintsº (P.1-18) .
The ALR mode should beused onlyfor
child restraint installation. Duringnormal
seat beltusebyan occupant, theALR
mode should notbeactivated. Ifitis
activated, itmay cause uncomfortable seat
belt tension.
WARNING
When fastening theseat belts, be
certain thatseatbacks arecompletely
secured inthe latched position. Ifthey
are not completely secured,passengers
may beinjured inan accident orsudden
stop.

If, because ofbody sizeordriving position, itis
not possible toproperly fitthe lap-shoulder belt
and fasten it,an extender thatiscompatible with

in (200 mm)oflength andmay beused foreither
the driver orfront passenger seatingposition.

WARNING
. Only NISSAN seatbeltextenders,
made bythe same company which
made theoriginal equipment seat

A child restraint maybesecured inthe vehicle
by using either theLATCH (Lower Anchors and
T ethers forCHildren) systemorwith thevehicle

NISSAN recommends thatallpre-teens
and children berestrained inthe rear seat.
Studies showthatchildren aresafer when
properly restrained inthe rear seat than in
the front seat.
This isespecially importantbecauseyour
vehicle hasasupplemental restraintsys-
tem (Airbag system) forthe front passen-
ger. See ªSupplemental restraintsystemº
(P .1-38) .

Children shouldremaininaforward-facing child
restraint withaharness untilthey reach the
maximum heightorweight limitallowed bythe
child restraint manufacturer.
Once achild outgrows theheight orweight limit
of the harness-equipped forward-facingchild
restraint, NISSANrecommends thatthechild be
placed inacommercially availableboosterseat
to obtain proper seatbeltfit.For aseat belttofit
properly ,the booster seatshould raisethechild so
that theshoulder beltisproperly positioned
across thechest andthetop, middle portion of
the shoulder. Theshoulder beltshould notcross
the neck orface andshould notfalloffthe
shoulder. Thelapbelt should liesnugly across
the lower hipsorupper thighs, nottheabdomen.
A booster seatcanonly beused inseating
positions thathave athree-point typeseatbelt.
The booster seatshould fitthe vehicle seatand
have alabel certifying thatitcomplies with
Federal MotorVehicle Safety Standards or
Canadian MotorVehicle Safety Standards.
Once thechild hasgrown sothe shoulder belt
is no longer onornear theface andneck, and
the lapbelt canbepositioned properlyacross
the lower hipsorupper thighs, usetheseat belt
without thebooster seat.
WARNING
Never letachild stand orkneel onany
seat anddonot allow achild inthe
cargo area.Thechild could beseriously

Several manufacturers offerchild restraints for
infants andsmall children ofvarious sizes.When
selecting anychild restraint, keepthefollowing
points inmind:
. Choose onlyarestraint withalabel certifying
that itcomplies withFederal MotorVehicle
Safety Standard 213orCanadian Motor

. Check thechild restraint inyour vehicle to
be sure itis compatible withthevehicle's
seat andseat beltsystem.
. Ifthe child restraint iscompatible withyour
vehicle, placeyourchild inthe child restraint
and check thevarious adjustments tobe
sure thechild restraint iscompatible with
your child. Choose achild restraint thatis
designed foryour child's heightandweight.

. Ifthe combined weightofthe child andchild
restraint isless than 65lbs (29.5 kg),you
may useeither theLATCH anchors orthe
seat belttoinstall thechild restraint (not
