Engine overheating 8-4 For emergencies
8
If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on and off. This is onlydue to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If this happens:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the enginecompartment. 3. Check that the cooling fans is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engineimmediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil- ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine.5. If you do not see steam or spray coming from under the hood, leave the engine on until the bar graph for the engine coolanttemperature warning display on the multi- information display goes down. When it is in the middle of the normal zone, youcan start driving again. If the bar graph stays in the red zone, turn off the engine.
6. When you do not see any more steam or spray, open the hood. Look for obvious leaks, such as a split radiator hose. Be careful as components will be hot. Anyleak source must be repaired. 7. If there is no obvious leak source, check the coolant level in the reserve tank. Ifthere is none, or if it is too low, slowly add coolant. 8. If the reserve tank needs coolant, you willprobably also need to add coolant to the radiator. Do not loosen or remove the radiator cap until the engine has cooleddown.
This vehicle is equipped with a mainte- nance-free battery located in the trunk. To assure proper battery installation and venting of flammable gases, the battery must be serviced and/or replaced by anauthorized Mitsubishi dealer only.

WA R N I N G
WA R N I N G To avoid personal injury, keep hands, hair, jewelry and clothes away from the cooling fans. The cooling fans can start at any time.
WA R N I N G Before raising the engine hood, check to see if there is steam or spray coming from under the hood. Steam or spray coming from an overheated engine could seriously scald you.Do not open the hood until there is no steam or spray.

Always use SAE 5W-30 engine oil. Mitsubishi Motors Genuine 5W-30 EngineOil is the recommended oil for optimum engine performance and protection.
N00955100042
The oil filter should be replaced at the time or mileage specified in the “WARRANTY ANDMAINTENANCE MANUAL”. Only use high quality replacement filters on this vehicle. The manufacturer’s specifica-tions for Genuine Mitsubishi oil filters require that the filter can withstand a pressure of 256 psi (1.8 MPa). A Genuine Mitsubishioil filter is the best replacement filter. Follow the installation
instructions printed on
the filter.

The coolant reserve tank (A) lets you quickly see when you need to add coolant. When the engine is cold, the level in the reserve tankshould be between the “FULL” and “LOW” marks. The radiator usually stays full so there is no reason to remove
the radiator cap (B)
except when you check the coolant freezepoint or replace the antifreeze coolant.
Mitsubishi Motors Genuine Coolant provides excellent protection against corrosion and rust formation on all metals, including alumi- num, and prevents blockages in some parts ofengine. If you need to add co
olant often, or if the
level in the reserve tank does not drop whenthe engine cools, the cooling system shouldbe pressure-tested for leaks. Take your vehi- cle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for testing.

*: similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrate and non-borate coolant with long life hybrid organic acid technologyCAUTION Do not use alcohol or methanol antifreeze or any engine coolants that contain them. Using the wrong antifreeze can corrode aluminumparts. The required concentration of anti-freeze dif- fers depending on the expected ambient tem- perature. Above -31 °F (-35 °C) : 50 %concentration of anti-freeze Below -31 °F (-35 °C) : 60 %concentrationof anti-freeze You can check the concentration level with a gauge from an automotive supply store, oryour authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or service station can check it for you.

Air cleaner filter 9-8 Vehicle care and maintenance

The radiator cap must be tight sealed to pre- vent losing coolant which may result in engine damage. Only use a Genuine Mitsubi-shi Parts radiator cap, or an approved equiva- lent. Do not overfill the reserve tank.
Your vehicle uses a special radiator cap that stays sealed and lets the coolant flow from the reserve tank back to the radiator when the engine cools down. If you needto change the cap, use the exact same kind. Check the coolant freeze point in the radi- ator with the proper gauge, and only when it is safe. If you add antifreeze, the con- tents of the reserve tank must be protectedagainst freezing. Keep the front of the radiator and con- denser clean. If the temperature of the engine coolant does not rise after the engine is warmed- up, take your vehicle to an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice to have the thermostat checked, and replaced if necessary.

The air cleaner filter w
ill get dirty and dusty
from use and not filter properly. Replace it with a new filter using the schedule in the“WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”. 1. Unclamp and take out the air cleaner fil- ter.
2. Install the air cleaner filter and put the cover back on in its original position.
Do not use water to adjust the concentration of coolant. Do not top off the tank with plain water only. Water by itself boils at a lower temperatureand does not stop rust or freezing. If the water freezes, it will damage your cooling system. Do not use tapwater. It can causecorrosion and rust.
Radiator cap
WA R N I N G Wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. Otherwise hotsteam or boiling coolant could spray up from the radiator and scald you.

NOTE
Genuine Mitsubishi Moto
rs Parts are recom-
mended when replacing the air cleaner filter. After replacing the air cleaner filter, make sure that the hinges at the bottom of cover are firmly set.
