This owner's manua l contains important infor­
mation, tips, suggestions, and warnings for
the use of your veh icle.
Make sure that this owner's manua l is always
located in the vehicle. This is especia lly impor­
tant if you allow other people to drive the ve­

signal is also given .
Parking brak e set
The parking brake warning light./. (Cana­
da models) illuminates whe n the park ing
b rake is set. In addit ion, a warning tone will
sound after you have driven for longer than 3
seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).
Pa rking brak e set
The . warning/ind icator light illuminates
when the parking brake is set¢.&, .

gine hood and check ing the brake fluid.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard! Stop the car an d get professiona l
assistance.
- USA models: If both, the. warning
light and the
Ill warning light come on
at the same time, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard brak ing . Lock-up
of the rear whee l brakes can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have
yo ur vehicle repaired immed iately by
you r autho rized Aud i dealer o r a quali­
fied workshop . D rive slowly and avo id
s u dden, hard brake application .
-Canada models: If both, the brake warn ­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
[iJ come on at the same t ime, the rear
wheels co uld lock up first unde r hard
braking . Lock -up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss o f vehicle control and an
acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
med iate ly by your authorized Aud i dealer or a qualified workshop
. Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application .
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
while you are dr iving, the f lu id leve l in
the brake flu id reservo ir is too low . If you
be lieve that it is safe to do so, proceed
immed iate ly at low speed to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake sys tem inspect­
ed .
- Always keep in mind that after severa l
brake applications, you will need greater
pressu re on the brake pedal to stop you r
vehicle . Do not rely on strained brakes to
respond with maximum stopping power
in critical s ituations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could lead to an accident.

The . (USA models) /. (Canada models)
indicato r light monitors the safety systems
e.g. (a irbags, pre tensioners) and ill uminates
f or a few se conds eac h time you swi tch the ig­
nition on.
If the . (USA models)/ . (Canada models)
i ndicato r ligh t does no t go o ut, o r if it illum i­
na tes while yo u are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a mal function somewhe re
in the system. If the light does not i lluminate
when you switch on the ignition , th is also
means there is a malfunct ion.
_& WARNING
If yo u have a ma lfunction in the safety sys­
tems, co ntact your authorized Aud i dea ler
immediately. Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acc i­
dent.

4 Safety belt warning light
Applies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts .
The warning light . comes o n for a few sec­
onds after the ignit io n is switched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety be lt .

D Battery
This warning/indicator light detects o mal­
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system.
The . warning/in dicator lig ht ill uminates
when you switch on t he ignit ion and must go
out after the engi ne has started.
• Alternator fault: Battery is not being
charged
If the indicator light turns o n an d the me s­
sage a ppears, t he re is a m alfu nct ion in the
generato r or vehicle e lectr ica l system.

~ Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair .
If the . symbo l appears in the disp lay and
flashes, the o il pressure is too low . In add ition
to the symbol, the followi ng message also ap ­
pears in the display :
Switch off engine! Oil pressure is too low
.. Pull off t he roa d and stop the ve hicle .
.. Shut the eng ine down.
.. Check the engine oil level¢

If the engine oil leve l is too low , top off oil to
the p roper level

If the . sym bo l starts flas hing ag ain even

do not start driving again and do
not let the engine run at idle.

(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip .
- The yellow oil level warn ing indication
Ill requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning symbol.

If the J.J.) indicator lamp illuminates, the sys­
tem has switched the ESC
off. In this case, you
can switch the ignition
off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
tioning completely when the indicator lamp
switches
off .
If the II indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched
off with the [!I button.
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See
owner 's manual
If the DJ indicator lamp and the riJ ABS indi­
cator lamp illuminate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or e lectronic differential lock
is ma lfunctioning. This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes st ill function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .

ABS/ (8 ) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light 1111 (USA mod-
e ls)
;riJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on .
The light will go o ut after an automatic check
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate when you switch the ign ition on.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving .
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes ­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!

also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light r=> page 14 and the
ABS warning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
r=> &.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system
the warning/ind icator light . (USA
models)/ . (Canada models) in the instru­
ment cluster flashes

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS . The
ABS warning light wi ll come on if there is a
malfunction in the EDL system
r=> page 141.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible .
_& WARNING
-If the Ill (USA models)/11] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not work ing properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only wit h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea le r as soon as pos­
sible.
- USA models: If the . warning light, the
G1 warning light and the 1111 warning
light come on together, the rear wheels
could lock up fi rst under hard braking .
Rear wheel lock -up can cause loss o f ve ­
hicle control and an accident. Have your
vehicle repaired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or a qualified work­
shop. Drive s low ly and avoid sudden,
hard brake applications. ..,.

Driver information
system
Introduction
The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information.

With the igni tion on, the display in the Dr iver
I nformation System shows the fol low ing in­
formation :
- CD* inserted or Radio* station set
- Outs ide temperature* : At temperatures be-
low 41 °F ( +S °C), a snowflake symbol ap­
pears in front of the temperatu re d isplay

- Warning when a door, the engine compa rt-
ment lid or the trunk lid is not closed .

Auto Check Control
Some f unct ions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operati ng sta tus when yo u
switch the ign ition on and whi le you a re driv­
ing. Malfunctions or req uired service proce­
dures ar e signaled audib ly and indicated by
red and yellow i lluminated symbols and re ­
m inders in the display.
A WARNING -
- Never rely exclusively on the outside
temperature display to determine if a
road surface is icy or not . K eep in m ind
that road surfaces, espec ially br idges
and overp asses, co uld be ice covered and
slippe ry even at an outside tempe ra tu re
above 4 1 °F (+5 °C).
- Always remembe r, even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the disp lay, black ice could be on
the road .
- A lways reduce your speed and d rive with
specia l care in cold weather cond itions
when the chance of encountering icy
road surfaces increases.
(D Tips
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are
dr iving at a very low speed, the tempera­
t u re s hown in the d isp lay m ight be
slightly h igher than the actual o utside
temperature. Th is is caused by the heat
being radiated from the engine .
- On vehicles with Audi Nav igat ion sys­
tem *, the displays may differ from their
normal appearance during navigation .

the calculation of the current trip informa­
t ion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours
the memory is reset automatica lly.
Total -trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the sing le-trip memory, the total-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This per­
mits you to evaluate your dr iving data for the
entire period between manual resets.

Resetting the function to zero
" Push the I Reset I button @ for at least two
seconds.
You can reset the fo llowing values to zero us­
ing the
I Reset I button :
- driving time -
distance
- average f uel mileage
- average speed
The t rip computer only operates when the ig­
nition is on. When you turn on the ignition,
the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignition off will be displayed .

-You can also set the values for the func­

-All stored values will be lost if the vehi­
cle battery is disconnected .
- The driving information in the efficiency
program is a lso reset to zero with the
single-trip memory.

Some funct ions in yo ur vehicle can be set , ac­
t ivated, and controlled by
Menus (e.g. Acous­
tic park assist *). With these menus you can al­
so select the information shown in the driver
information system, which operates only with
the ignition switched on. Operation is control­
led by the
! Reset I button and the rocker switch
on the wiper lever

The Start menu shows you the different dis­
play types

-The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
terva ls over a period of ti me.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your nex t service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspec­
tion is calculated automatically and displayed
accordingly. The display works in two stages :
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice reminder appears in the display when you
turn on the ignition.
After about
5 seconds the display switches
back to normal. The distance and time re­
maining are updated each time the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is
reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached , the
message
Service due! appears in the instru ­
ment cluster immediately after you turn on
the ignition. Additionally, a warning tone
sounds . After about
5 seconds the display
switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due,
can be shown in the instrument cluster by se­
lecting the serv ice interval display. Select
Check > Service > Oil change or Service by us­
ing the
! R ES ET I button and the rocker switch
c> page 25 , fig . 12.
Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the cor­
responding service schedule after performing
the appropriate service on your veh icle. You
also have the possibility to reset the oil
change schedule after having performed an
o il change according to Audi specifications.
- Switch the ignition on.

button is not pulled within 5 seconds, the

If you disconnect the battery terminals, no
ca lculations can be made for the service
interval display during this time and no
service reminder will appear. Remember
that observing the proper service intervals
i s vitally important to extending the life of
your vehicle, particularly the engine, and
maintain ing its value . Even if the mileage
driven is low, the maximum period of one
year from one service to the next must not
be exceeded.

(D Tips
-Do not reset the display between oil
changes, otherwise the display w ill be in­
correct.
- Th e information in the Service Reminder
remains stored even when the vehicle
battery is disconnected.

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet ke y
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock. If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad­
vised to turn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the rear lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .

The eme rgency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced

Registered ke ys
You can check to find out how many keys have
been reg istered to your vehicle. Therefore,
when buy ing a used veh icle, make sure to get
all of the keys that belong to it.

When a button is pressed, the check light

- Do not leave your vehicle unattended
wit h the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endange r
you o r result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle. A lways loc k all doors a nd take the
key.
- D o not leave ch ildren unattended in the
veh icle, especially wi th access to vehicle
keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro ­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in ser ious in­
jury.
{!) Tips
- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
sound . Th is is your rem inder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, rep lacement keys
are only ava ilable from Audi dealers .
