Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ¢ page 30 constant­
l y monitors certai n ind iv idual funct ions and
components of the ve hicl e when the ignit ion
is t urned on and when the vehicle is moving.
W ith the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Au to-C hec k seque nce" by p res sing the
I CH ECKi button. Yo u ca n pe rform an A uto­
Check sequence when the vehi cle is stationary
and the ign ition is turned on or when the vehi­
cle is mov ing not faster than
3 mph (5 km/h).
The number of keys progr ammed to the vehi­
cle is also displayed. The disp lay
3 \3 indicates
that th ree keys have been programmed . This
allows yo u to make sure you have rece ived a ll
of the keys when you purchase a used vehicle.
F or exam ple, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your a uth orized
Aud i dea ler to have the miss ing key deactivat­
ed so it cannot be used. You sho uld also re­
port the m issi ng key to your insurance compa­
ny.
Calling up the driver informati on
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usua lly w ith a driver
message . T he driver message display disap­
pears after about 5 seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed agai n by briefly press ­
in g the
!CHECK I button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ICHECK I button briefly, yo u
can set thres ho ld 1 of the speed warning
while you are driving

Instrument cluster illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

A lig ht sensor in the instrument cl uster con­
tro ls t he illumination for the instrument clus­

bright env ironment, us ing the b uttons to

The illumination for the inst rument cluster
lights up w henever you switch on the igni­
tion with the vehicle headlights off. As the
day light fades, the inst rument cluste r illu­
mination l ikewise dims automa tica lly and
will go out comp let ely when the o utsi de
li g ht is very low. T his feature is meant t o
r emi nd you t o switch on t he he adlight s
whe n outs ide lig ht con ditions become
p oor .

nates. The engine speed is limited to the
speed displayed in the driver informa tion sys­
tem . Keep in mind that the engine speed w ill
not exceed the value d isplayed in the dr iver in­
format ion system, for example when down­
shifting.
Please go to an author ized Audi dealer or oth ­
er qualified workshop to have the malfunct ion
repaired.

When the II symbol illuminates, you can a l­
ter your driving style to ass ist the filter sel f­
cleaning process . Drive for approximately 15
minutes with the selector lever in the S posi ­
t ion at a m inimum speed of 37 mph (60 km/
h) and an eng ine speed of approximately
2,000 RP M. T he temperat ure increase that
will res ult from this can burn off the soo t in
the fi lter . The symbol will switch off when the
cleaning is successful. After a successful
cleaning, there is no need to bring the car to
an authori zed dea ler or qualified workshop
because th is is part of normal vehicle opera­
t ion .
If the symbol

to have the problem corrected.

Unlocking and l ocking with Conven ience
k ey*
On vehicles which a re equipped w ith the C o n­
ve nience k ey*
authorization system, the
doors are unlocked without a key by means of
a proximity sensor in the door handle. The
doors are simi larly locked without a key using
the locking button. Each door has a proximity
sensor and a locking button .
Automatic l ock ing
The automatic locking feature locks all the ve­
hicle doors and the rear lid when you drive
faster than 9 mph (15 km/h). This function can be turned on and off in the MMI
C entr al
lo cking
Menu c:> page 44.
You can un lock the vehicle from the inside by :
- removing the key from the ign it ion sw itch
(the vehicle will automat ica lly unlock itself)
or
- pressing the unlock part of the power lock
switch @or
- pull ing the door handle (twice to open the
rear doors).
Unintent ionall y locking yourself out
In the following cases there safeguards to
prevent you locking your remote master key in
the vehicle :
- The veh icle does not lock with the power
locking sw itch
c:> page 44 if the driver's
door is open.
- On vehicles with Convenience key* , if the
most recently used master key is in the lug­
gage compartment, the rear lid is automati­
cal ly unloc ked aga in after it is closed.

and the rea r lid are closed. In t his way you
avoid locking yourse lf out accidenta lly.
A WARNING
- When you lock your vehicle from outside,
nobody- espec ially children -should re ­
main inside the vehicle . Remember,
when you lock the vehicle from the out­
side the windows cannot be opened from
the inside.
- When you leave the veh icle, always re­
move the ignition key and take it with
you . This will prevent passengers (chil­
dren, for example) from accidentally be ­
ing locked in the vehicle should they acci­
dentally press the power locking switch
in the front doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be imposs ible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- If the power locking system sho uld mal­
function, you can lock each door individ­
ually using the vehicle key

-If the power locking system shou ld fa il,
you can still open the fuel tank flap in an
emergency

-You are well advised not to keep va lua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, v is ible
or not. Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot p rov ide the secur ity of a safe .

If your vehicle has been stand ing for an ex­
tended period, please note the following:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
unlock the vehicle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your veh icle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the energy management system gradu­
a lly switches off unnecessary co nven­
i ence f unct io ns.
It is possible that you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us­
ing these convenience f unctions.
Locking the vehicle

The vehicle can be locked without operating
the master key.

thor ized master key on ly has to be within a
range of about 5 feet (1.5 meters) from the

otherwise the ve hicle cannot be locked .
A WARNING
--When you lock yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody - espec ia lly children - shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when you lock the vehicle from the out­
side the wi ndows cannot be opened from
the inside.
- When you leave the veh icle, always re­
move the ign ition key and take it with
you. This will prevent passengers (chil­
d ren, fo r ex ample) from acci dentally be­
i n g lo cked in the vehicle shou ld they acci­
denta lly press the power locking switch
in the front doors.
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle

It i s no t possible to re -open the doo r fo r a
brief pe riod directly after closing it. This
allows you to ensure that the doo rs are
properly locked.
Anti-theft alarm system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any­
one attempts to break into the vehicle.
The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi­
ble ala rm and turns on the emergency flashe r
if an unautho rized interfe rence with the veh i­
cl e is sensed by the sys tem.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti-theft alarm system is switched on
whe n you lock the ve hicle. The system is ac ti­
vated approximate ly 30 seconds after the ve­
hicle is locked. The indicato r ligh t on top o f
the door trim start flashing rapid ly for 30 sec -
onds and then blink slowly. ..,.

Switching off the lights

The headlights only work when the ignition is
switched on. While starting the engine or
when switching off the ignition, the head­
lights will go off and on ly the side marker
lights will be on.
After starting the engine, the headlights are
automatically adjusted* to the load and angle
of the vehicle (for example, during accelera­
tion, braking). This prevents oncoming traff ic
from experiencing unnecessary headlight
glare from your headlights. If the
system is not ope rating properly, a
warn ing symbol in the Auto-Check Control is
displayed

Light Sensor Malfunction
In the event of a light sensor malfunction , the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­

However, you can conti nue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switch . Have the ..,.

light sensor checked as soon as possible at an
authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
A WARNING
- Daytime running lights and automatic
headlights are only intended to assist
the driver. They do not relieve the driver
of his responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually ac­
cording to the current light and visibility
conditions. For example, fog cannot be
detected by the light sensors*. So always
switch on the headlights
~D under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark.
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the headlights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lighting systems described here.
@ Tips
-With the switch in AUTO front fog lights
and rear fog lights cannot be turned on in addition.
- The light sensor for headlight control is
located in the rear view mirror mount.
You should therefore not apply any stick­
ers to the windshield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted ¢

-When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open.
- In cool or damp weather, the inside of
the headlights, turn signals and tail
lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clear shortly after
M "' switching them on. This does not affect 0
~ the service life of the lighting.

ing on vehicle equipment, the function can be
switched on and off or the length of ti me the lights remain on* can be adjusted .
The leaving home illuminates the area outside
the vehicle when you unlock the vehicle . This
function can be switched on and off .
The Coming home and Leaving home func­
tions only operate when it is dark and the light switch is in the
AUTO position.
Daytime running lights
USA models: The daytime running lights can
be turned on or off using this function.
Canada models: The function cannot be
turned
off. It is activated automatically each
time the ignition is turned on. This menu item is shown "greyed out" .
