Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the I START !
button to start the engine and do not depress
the brake pedal. The engine can only be start­
ed if the brake pedal is depressed .
Engage Nor P to start engine
This message appears when the engine is
started if the selector lever for the automatic
transmission is not in the P or N position. The
engine can only be started with the selector in
these positions.
!I Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the !J! sym­
bol if the master key is removed from the ve­
hicle with the engine running .
It is intended
to remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignition after stop­ ping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the
veh icle from the outside with the key.
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if you are not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons
along w ith a warning buzzer if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in
the P pos ition when the ignit ion is switched
off with the
ISTOPI button and the dr iver's
door is opened. Move the se lector lever to the
P position, otherwise the vehicle is not se ­
cured against rolling away . You a lso cannot
lock the vehicle using the lock ing button on
the door hand le or using the remote key.
On the road 111
To engage steering lock, press and hold
STOP button
This message appears for safety reasons if the
engine and the ignition have been switched
off by pressing the
I STOPI button once, and
then the driver's door is opened. In this in­
stance, the steering is not locked . The steer ­
ing is locked:
- If you press the
IS TOPI button again for
more than 1 second.
- If you close the driver's door and lock your
veh icle from the outside.
Parking brake
Operation
The parking brake replaces the handbrake .

What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving i s directly rela ted to the condi­
t ion of the vehicle , the driver as well as the
driver 's abili ty to concentrate on the road
without being distracted .
The driver is responsib le fo r the s afety o f the
ve hicl e an d all of i ts occupants . If you r ab ility
to d rive is impai red, safety r is k s for everybody
i n the vehicle increase and yo u also become a
hazard to everyone else on the road <=>

Therefore:
• Do not let yo ursel f be distracte d by passe n­
gers or by using a cellular telephone.
• NEVER dr ive when your dr iv ing ability is im ­
paired (by medicat ions, alcohol , drugs, etc.).
• Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road
and speed limits and plain common sense .
• ALWAYS ad just yo ur speed to road, t raff ic
and weathe r con dit ions .
• Take frequent breaks o n long t rips. Do no t
dr ive for more than two hours a t a str etch .
• Do NOT drive when you are t ired, under
pressure or when you are st ressed .

For yo ur own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust t he driver's seat to the
fo llow ing pos ition:
• Adj ust t he d river's seat so that you can easi­
ly push the pedals all the way to the floor
while keepi ng your knee(s) slightly bent

A WARNING
Sitting in the wrong position can increase
the risk of serious injury in crashes.
- To reduce the risk of injury when the air­
bags inflate, the driver and passengers
must always sit in an upright position,
must not lean against or place any part
of their body too close to the area where
the airbags are located.
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of posi­
tion or too close to the airbag can be se­
riously injured by an airbag as it unfolds
with great force in the blink of an eye
¢page 184.
A WARNING -
A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat installed on the front passenger seat
will be seriously injured and can be killed if
the front airbag inflates -even with an Ad­
vanced Airbag System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward-facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circumstan­
ces and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on and stay on, im­
mediately install the rear-facing child
safety seat in a rear seating position and
have the airbag system inspected by your
authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will
increase the risk of injury in a crash by in­
terfering with the way the airbag unfolds
or by being pushed into you as the airbag inflates .
- Never hold things in your hands or on
your lap when the vehicle is in use.
- Never transport items on or in the area
of the front passenger seat. Objects
could move into the area of the front air­
bags during braking or other sudden ma­
neuvers and become dangerous projec­
tiles that can cause serious personal in­
jury if the airbags inflate.
- Never place or attach accessories or oth­
er objects (such as cupholders, tele­
phone brackets, large, heavy or bulky ob­
jects) on the doors, over or near the area marked "AIRBAG" on the steering wheel,
instrument panel, seat backrests or be­
tween those areas and yourself . These
objects could cause injury in a crash, es­
pecially when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger's seat
to transport objects. Items can also
move into the area of the side airbag or
the front airbag during braking or in a
sudden maneuver. Objects near the air­
bags can become projectiles and cause
injury, particularly when the seat is re­
clined.
- Never tilt the front passenger seat back­
rest forward when the vehicle is moving.
An inflating airbag will force the back­
rest backward and can injure rear seat oc­
cupants.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy
can cause breathing problems for people
with a history of asthma or other breath­ ing conditions.

Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the airbag system are installed at
many different places on your Audi. Installing,
removing, servicing or repairing a part in an
area of the vehicle can damage a part of an
airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a collision.
There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effectiveness of
the system will not be impaired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or pol­
lute the environment.
& WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in­
jury and death by preventing an airbag from deploying when needed or deploying an airbag unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the
steering wheel horn pad or airbag cover
or the instrument panel or modify them
in any way .
- Never attach any objects such as cu­ pholders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
panel, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
moistened with plain water . Solvents or
cleaners could damage the airbag cover
or change the stiffness or strength of the
material so that the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the airbag system.
-All work on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, front seats or electrical sys­
tem (including the installation of audio
equipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc.) must be performed by a
qualified technician who has the training
and special equipment necessary. -
For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
inflate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and
special equipment necessary .
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once . After an airbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced with new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
cially for your Audi model version. Re­ placement of complete airbag systems
or airbag components must be per­
formed by qualified workshops only.

-For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech­ nic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circuit inter­
rupter must only be performed by a
qualified dealer - risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter
is scrapped , all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be followed.

When the system is triggered, the airbag is
filled with propellant gas and breaks through
a seam in the seat surface area marked "AIR­
BAG". It expands between the side trim panel
and the passenger . In order to help provide
this additional protection, the side airbag must inflate withi n a fraction of a second at
very high speed and with great force . The sup­
p lemental side a irbag could injure you if your
seating position is not proper or upr ight or if
items are located in the area where the sup­
p lemental side airbag expands. This applies
especia lly to children

Supplemental side airbags inflate between
the occupant and the door panel on the side
of the vehicle that is struck in certain side col­
lision
c::> fig . 213 .
Although they are not a soft pillow, they can
"cushion" the impact and in th is way they can
he lp to reduce the r isk of injury to the upper
part of the body .
A fine dust may develop when the airbag de­ ploys. This is normal and does not mean there
is a fire in the vehicle.
Important safety instructions on the
side airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. Al­ways properly wear safety belts and ride in a
proper seating position.
There is a lot that you and your passengers
must know and act accordingly to help the
safety belts and a irbags do the ir job to pro­
v ide supp lemental protection.
A WARNING
An inflating side airbag can cause ser ious
or fatal injury. Improperly wearing safety
belts and improper seating positions in ­
crease the risk of serious personal injury
and death whenever a veh icle is being
used.
- In order to reduce the risk of injury when
the supplemental side airbag inflates:

never lean aga inst the area where the
supplementa l side airbag is located.
- Never let a child or anyone e lse rest
their head aga inst the s ide trim panel

seat put their hand or any other parts
of their body out of the window .
- Always make sure that the s ide a irbag

backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.

cover the areas where the side a irbags
deploy.

250 Fuel supply and filling your fuel tank
Such damage will not be covered by your
New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- If you p ut any amount of incorrect fuel in
the fue l tank, do not start the engi ne un­
der any circumstances. Immediately con­
tact the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
s istance. These fuels contain substances
that can severely damage the fuel sys­
tem and the engine if the engine is start­
ed.

Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail, you
can st ill open the flap manually -for detailed
instructions see
c;,page 252.
You can find the fue l tank capacity of your ve­
hicle in
c;,page 325.
The label on the inside of the fue l filler flap
tells you the cor rect fuel for your vehicle. Fo r
more information about fuel specifications,
see
c::> page 248.
Your veh icle fuel tank has an on-board refuel­
ling vapor recovery system. This feature helps
to prevent fu el vapors from escaping from the
tank and polluting the environment while you refuel your vehicle. In order to fill the tank
properly whi le protecting the environment,
please follow t his refueling procedure careful­
ly .
A WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, neve r
carry additiona l fuel containers in you r car.
Gas canisters and other containers used to
transport fuel can be dangerous. Such con­
tainers, full or empty, may leak and could
cause a fire in a collision. If you must
transport fue l to use for yo ur lawn mower,
snow blower, etc., be very careful and al­
ways observe local and state laws regard­
ing the use, transportation and storage of such
fuel containers . Make certain the con­
tainer meets industry standards (ANSI/
ASTM F852 -86).
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fue l tank
is completely empty. The irregu lar supply
of fue l can cause misfiring. Gasoline could
enter the exhaust system and damage the
catalytic converter .

When adding fuel, the ignit ion and any cellu­
lar phones in the veh icle must be switched
off. When activating the central locking, the
fuel filler flap is automatically un locked or
locked. Refuel the vehicle with the ignit ion
turned
off.

er flap to determine if the vehicle must be
fueled with gasoline or diesel fuel.
Refuelling procedure
~ Insert the fuel nozzle from the gasol ine
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
~ Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
no zzle switches off automatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
~ After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
~ Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and comp lete ly. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may also cause the M IL lamp

to come on (only vehicles with gasoline en­
gine) .
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns.
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries .
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fuel to spray out of f iller neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and ove rflow ing fuel can
cause a fire.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile re­
fueling. The electromagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ignite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
you must get back in your vehicle whi le
refueling, make certain that yo u close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.

-Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu­
eling or filling a portable fuel conta iner .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel with a portable
fuel container in your vehicle . The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
while it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compart­
ment, or on the trunk). Stat ic electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire .
- Always place a portable fuel conta iner
on the ground before filling.
- Always keep the filler no zzle complete­
ly inside the portable container before
and dur ing filling .
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be
in contact with the conta iner . This will
help prevent static electric ity from d is­
charging and cause a fire .
- Never spill fue l inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cia l laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers.
- Make certain the fuel container meets
in dustry standa rds (ANSI/ AS TM
F852-86).
(D Note
If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
shou ld be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozzle
switches off automat ica lly for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
