General information
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only
provide maximum protection if the front seats are correctly adjusted .
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that:
- you can easily and quickly reach all the switches
and controls in the instrument panel
- your body is properly supported thus reducing
physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats.
There are special regulations and instructions for installing a child safety seat on the front pas­
senger's seat . Always follow the information re­
garding child safety provided in¢
page 172,
Child safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the dr iver and all
other passengers can result in serious person­
al injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when the
vehicle is in motion - never put your feet on
top of the instrument panel, out of the win­
dow or on top of the seat cushion. This ap­
plies especially to the passengers. If your
seating pos it ion is inco rrect, you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden brak­
ing or an accident. If the airbag inflates and
the seating position is incorrect, this could
result in personal injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front
passenger to keep a distance of at least
10 inches (25 cm) between themse lves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument panel. If you're sitting any closer than th is, the a ir ­
bag system cannot protect you properly. In

addit ion, the front seats and head restraints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you maximum protection.
- Always try to keep as much distance as pos­
sible between yourself and the steer ing
wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front passeng­ er's seat while the veh icle is moving. Your
seat may move unexpectedly, causing sud­
den loss of vehicle control and personal in­
jury . If you adjust your seat while the vehicle
is moving, you a re out of position .
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's seat
in the following manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that
you can eas ily push the pedals to the floor
while keeping your knees slightly bent¢

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when you sit with
your back against the seatback , you can still
grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.,. Ad just the head rest ra int so the upper edge is

If
that is not possible, try to adj ust the head re­
straint so that it is as close to this position as possible ¢

A WARNING
-~
Never place any objects in the dr iver 's foot-
well . An object could get into the pedal area
and inte rfe re with pedal funct ion . In case of
sudden braking or an acc ident, you would not
be ab le to brake or accelerate.
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the
rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the a irbag while it is de­
ploy ing, do not sit any closer to the instrument

panel than necessary and always wear the three­
point safety belt provided adjusted correctly. We
recommend that you adjust the passenger's seat
in the following manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat into the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment

A WARNING
-Never adjust the driver's or front passeng­
er 's seat while the veh icle is moving. If you
do th is while the veh icle is moving, you will
be out of pos it ion. Always adjust the d river 's
or front passenger's sea t when the vehicle is
no t moving.
- Be ca reful whe n ad justing the seat he ight.
Check to see t hat no one is in the way, or se­
r io us inju ry co uld resu lt!
- Because the seat s can be elec trically adjust­
e d w ith the ignition off or with the ignition
key removed, neve r leave childre n unattend­
ed in the vehicle . Unsupervised use o f the
electric seat ad justments may cause serious
in jury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front passen ­
gers must never ride in a moving vehicle
w it h the backrest reclined. Safety belts and
the airbag system only offer max imum pro­
tect ion when the backrest is up right and the
safety belts are prope rly positioned on the
body. The more the ba ckrest is re cli ned, the
greate r the risk of perso na l inju ry from an
incorrect seating posit ion and improperly
posi tioned safety belts.
Memory function
Memory for driver's seat

The seat adjustment settings for two drivers can
be stored using the memory buttons in the driv­
er's door .

In addition to the setting for the drive r's seat ,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be stor­
ed and reca lled through seat memory if the veh i­
cle is properly equipped.
Storin g and recallin g se tting s
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
¢ fig. 65 the settings for two different drivers
can be stored and reca lled

The cu rrent settings are also a utomat ica lly as ­
signed to the remote control key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle is
un locked, the settings assigned to the remote
contro l key being used are automatica lly recalled .
Turnin g seat m emo ry on and off
If the IO FF I sw itch is depressed, the seat memory
is inoperative . When the Memory function is off,
the LED in the button lights up.
All the stored settings a re retained. We recom­
mend using the
I O FF I sw itch and de activating the
seat memory if the vehicle is only go ing to be
used
temporarily by a driver whose settings are
not going to be stored .
Storing and recalling settings

Storing settings
~ Adjust the driv er's seat.
~ Adjust the two exter ior mirrors.
~ Press the !SET I button. The light in the button
will come on.
~ Now p ress a memory button (III or~). If the
stor ing procedure is correct, a confirmation
tone w ill sound .
Recall ing setting s
~ If the dr iver 's door is open and the ignit ion is
switched off, tap the correspond ing memory
button br iefly .
~ If the dr iver's door is closed or the ignit ion is
switched on, p ress the approp riate memo ry
button until the s to red pos ition is rea ched .

the light in the

S eat s and stor age
When the vehicle is lo cked , the current settings
are stored and assigned to the remote contro l
key . But the settings stored on memory buttons
1 to 2 are not deleted . They can be recalled at
any time . When the vehicle is
unlocked , the set­
t ings assigned to the remote control key a re re ­
stored .
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save your in­
dividua l seat position on one of the memory but ­
tons . You can recall your settings again simply
and conveniently by p ress ing the corresponding
memo ry butto n. When the vehicle is locked,
these settings are automatica lly re-assigned to
the remote control key and stored .
& WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can only
be recalled when the vehicle is stationary -
otherwise you risk hav ing an accident.
- In an emergency the recall proced ure can be
cancelled by pressing the
I OFF I switch or by
tapp ing of the memory buttons.
Activating remote control key memory
Applies to vehicles: wit h seat memory
To assign the dr iver 's seat settings to the remote
control key when locking the vehicle, the function
must be activated in the radio or MMI*.

Rear seat
General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety precautions .
All passengers on the rear seats must be seated
in compliance with the safety guidelines ex­
plained in
¢ page 144 and ¢page 152. The cor ­
rect seat ing pos ition is crit ical for the safety of
front
and rear seat passengers alike ¢ page 138.
_& WARNING
-Occupants in the front and rear seats must
always be properly restrained.
- Do not let anyone ride in the vehicle without
the head restraints prov ided . Head re­
strain ts he lp to red uce in juries.
- Loose item s inside the passenger compa rt­
me nt, can fly forward in a crash or s udden
mane uver and injure occ upants . Always
store articles in the luggage compartment
and use the fasten ing eyes, especially when
the rear seatbacks have been fo lded down.
- Read and heed all WARNINGS

The fore-and-oft adjustment of the seat cushion

The head restraints on the front seats can be ad­
justed to provide safe support to head and neck
at the optimum heig ht. W hen optimally ad just­
ed, the top of the restra int should be level w ith

So that the driver can have a better view to the
rear, the head restraints should be pushed down
completely when the rear seats are not occupied.
A WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints when necessary in o rder to install a child
seat. Insta ll the head restraint again imme­
diately once the ch ild seat is removed. Driv­
ing withou t head restraints or wit h head re­
straints that are not properly ad justed in ­
creases the risk of serious or fata l neck in ­
jury dramatically.

The armrest is adjustable in several stages and
can be moved forward and back.
