General information
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only
provide maximum protection if the front seats are correctly adjusted .
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that:
- you can easily and quickly reach all the switches
and controls in the instrument panel
- your body is properly supported thus reducing
physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats.
There are special regulations and instructions for installing a child safety seat on the front pas­
senger's seat . Always follow the information re­
garding child safety provided in¢
page 172,
Child safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the dr iver and all
other passengers can result in serious person­
al injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when the
vehicle is in motion - never put your feet on
top of the instrument panel, out of the win­
dow or on top of the seat cushion. This ap­
plies especially to the passengers. If your
seating pos it ion is inco rrect, you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden brak­
ing or an accident. If the airbag inflates and
the seating position is incorrect, this could
result in personal injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front
passenger to keep a distance of at least
10 inches (25 cm) between themse lves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument panel. If you're sitting any closer than th is, the a ir ­
bag system cannot protect you properly. In

addit ion, the front seats and head restraints
must be adjusted to your body height so
that they can give you maximum protection.
- Always try to keep as much distance as pos­
sible between yourself and the steer ing
wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front passeng­ er's seat while the veh icle is moving. Your
seat may move unexpectedly, causing sud­
den loss of vehicle control and personal in­
jury . If you adjust your seat while the vehicle
is moving, you a re out of position .
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's seat
in the following manner:
.,. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that
you can eas ily push the pedals to the floor
while keeping your knees slightly bent¢

your back against the seatback , you can still
grasp the top of the steering wheel.

A WARNING
-~
Never place any objects in the dr iver 's foot-
well . An object could get into the pedal area
and inte rfe re with pedal funct ion . In case of
sudden braking or an acc ident, you would not
be ab le to brake or accelerate.
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the
rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the a irbag while it is de­
ploy ing, do not sit any closer to the instrument

panel than necessary and always wear the three­
point safety belt provided adjusted correctly. We
recommend that you adjust the passenger's seat
in the following manner:
.. Move the front passenger seat into the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment

-Never adjust the driver's or front passeng­
er 's seat while the veh icle is moving. If you
do th is while the veh icle is moving, you will
be out of pos it ion. Always adjust the d river 's
or front passenger's sea t when the vehicle is
no t moving.

- Because the seat s can be elec trically adjust­
e d w ith the ignition off or with the ignition
key removed, neve r leave childre n unattend­
ed in the vehicle . Unsupervised use o f the
electric seat ad justments may cause serious
in jury.
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front passen ­
gers must never ride in a moving vehicle
w it h the backrest reclined. Safety belts and
the airbag system only offer max imum pro­
tect ion when the backrest is up right and the
safety belts are prope rly positioned on the
body. The more the ba ckrest is re cli ned, the
greate r the risk of perso na l inju ry from an
incorrect seating posit ion and improperly
posi tioned safety belts.

The seat adjustment settings for two drivers can
be stored using the memory buttons in the driv­
er's door .

Rear seat
General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety precautions .
All passengers on the rear seats must be seated
in compliance with the safety guidelines ex­
plained in
¢ page 144 and ¢page 152. The cor ­
rect seat ing pos ition is crit ical for the safety of
front
and rear seat passengers alike ¢ page 138.

-Occupants in the front and rear seats must
always be properly restrained.
- Do not let anyone ride in the vehicle without
the head restraints prov ided . Head re­
strain ts he lp to red uce in juries.
- Loose item s inside the passenger compa rt­
me nt, can fly forward in a crash or s udden
mane uver and injure occ upants . Always
store articles in the luggage compartment
and use the fasten ing eyes, especially when
the rear seatbacks have been fo lded down.

The head restraints on the front seats can be ad­
justed to provide safe support to head and neck
at the optimum heig ht. W hen optimally ad just­
ed, the top of the restra int should be level w ith

So that the driver can have a better view to the
rear, the head restraints should be pushed down
completely when the rear seats are not occupied.
A WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints when necessary in o rder to install a child
seat. Insta ll the head restraint again imme­
diately once the ch ild seat is removed. Driv­
ing withou t head restraints or wit h head re­
straints that are not properly ad justed in ­
creases the risk of serious or fata l neck in ­
jury dramatically.

be adjusted .

wheel.
If you cannot sit mo re than 10 i nch es (25
cm) from the steering wheel, see if adaptive
equipment is available to help you reach the ped­
als and increase the distance from the steering
wheel.

A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment
and improper seating position can cause seri­
ous pe rsonal injury .
- Adjust the steering wheel column on ly when
the vehicle is not moving to prevent loss of
vehicle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel so
that there is a minimum of 10 inches (25
cm) between your chest and the steering
wheel

maintain this minimum distance, the airbag
system cannot p rotect you properly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from sit­
ting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from the
steer ing whee l, check with your authorized
Audi dea ler to see if adaptive equipment is
availab le.
- If the steer ing whee l is aligned with your
face, the supplementa l driver 's airbag can­
not prov ide as much p rotection in a n acci­
dent. Always make su re that the steering
wheel is alig ned with your chest.
- Always hold the steer ing wheel w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the ris k of persona l injury if
the dr iver's air bag dep loys.
- Never hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o'cloc k position o r with your hands inside
the steering wheel rim or on t he steering
wheel hub . Holding the steeri ng whee l the
wrong way can cause serious injuries to the
hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag
deploys.

ized here what you need to know about safety
belts, airbags , chi ld restraints as well as child

ways observe the informat ion and warn ings in
this section - for your own safety as well as that
of your passengers .
The information in this section app lies to all
model ve rsions of your vehicle . Some of the fea ­
tures described in this sections may be standard
equipment on some models, or may be optional
eq uipment on others .
If you are not sure, ask

Driving safety
-Always keep your feet on the floor in front
of the seat. Never rest them on the seat, in­
strument panel, out of the window, etc. The airbag system and safety belt will not be
able to protect you properly and can even in­
crease the risk of injury in a crash .
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or tilted far back! The farther the backrests are
tilted back, the greater the risk of injury due
to incorrect positioning of the safety belt
and improper seating position.
- Children must always ride in child safety
seats r=;,

Proper seating positions for passengers in
rear seats
Rear seat passengers must sit upright with both
feet on the floor consistent with their physical
size and be properly restrained whenever the ve­ hicle is in use.
To reduce the risk of injury caused by an incorrect
seating position in the event of a sudden braking
maneuver or an accident, your passengers on the
rear bench seat must always observe the follow­
ing:
~ If there is a passenger on the rear center seat ­
ing position, slide the center head restraint up­
ward at least to the next notch r=;,

~ Make sure that the seatback is securely latched
in the upright position

~ Keep both feet flat in the footwell in front of
the rear seat.
~ Fasten and wear safety belts properly

~ Make sure that children are always properly re ­
strained in a child restraint that is appropriate
for their size and age r=;,

A WARNING
Passengers who are improperly seated on the
rear seat can be seriously injured in a crash.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat of their own and properly fasten and wear the
safety belt belonging to that seat.

- Safety belts only offer maximum protection
when the seatback is securely latched in the
upright position and the safety belts are properly positioned on the body. By not sit­
ting upright, a rear seat passenger increases
the risk of personal injury from improperly
positioned safety belts!
- Always adjust the head restraint properly so
that it can give maximum protection.
Proper adjustment of head restraints
Correctly adjusted head restraints are an impor­
tant part of your vehicle's occupant restraint sys­
tem and can help to reduce the risk of injuries in
accident situations.

The head restraints must be correctly adjusted to
