Accessories, spare parts and
modification of your Toyota
Both genuine Toyota and a wide variety of other spare parts and
accessories for Toyota vehicles are currently available on the market.
Should it be determined that any of the genuine Toyota parts or
accessories supplied with the vehicle need to be replaced, Toyota
recommends that genuine Toyota parts or accessories, be used to
replace them. Other parts or accessories of matching quality can
also be used. Toyota cannot acceptany liability orguarantee spare
parts and accessories which are not genuine Toyota products, nor for
replacement or installation involving such parts. In addition, damage
or performance problems resulting from the use of non−genuine
Toyota spare parts or accessories may not be covered under
warranty.
Installation of an RF−transmitter system
As the installation of an RF−transmitter system in your vehicle could
affect electronic systems such as the electronically controlled fuel
pump, electronic engine controlsystem, anti−lock brake system, SRS
airbag system and seat belt pretensionersystem, be sure to check
with any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly quali-
fied and equipped professional, for precautionary measures or special
instructions regarding installation.
Further information regarding frequency bands, power levels, antenna
positions and installation provisions for the installation of RF−trans-
mitters, is available on request at any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

Maintenance schedule
Please refer to the separate “Toyota Service Booklet” or “Toyota War-
ranty Booklet”.
Scrapping of your Toyota
The SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner devices in your Toyota
contain explosive chemicals. If the vehicle is scrapped with the air-
bag and pretensioner left as they are, this may cause an accident
such as fire. Be sure to have the systems of the SRS airbag and
seat belt pretensioner removed and disposed of by a qualified ser-
vice shop or by an authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional, before you dispose of your
vehicle.
Your vehicle contains batteries and/or accumulators. Do not discard
them into the environment but cooperate with separate collection (Di-
rective 2006/66/EC).

The driver ’s seat belt pretensioner is
designed to be activated in response to
a severe frontal impact.
When the airbag sensor detects the shock
of a severe frontal impact, the driver ’s
seat belt is quickly drawn back in by the
retractor so that the belt snugly restrains
the driver.
Collisionsoccurring at certain speeds and
angles may cause the seat belt preten-
sioner and SRS airbag not to operate all
together. This indicator comes on when the en-
gine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion. It goes off after about 6 seconds.
This means the driver ’s seat belt pre-
tensioner is operating properly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, airbag sensor,
driver ’s seat belt pretensioner assembly,
inflator, interconnecting wiring and power
sources. (For details, see “Service remind-
er indicators and warning buzzer” on page
73 in Section 1−5.)

36SEATS, SEAT BELTS, STEERING WHEEL AND MIRRORS
The driver ’s seat belt pretensionersystem
mainly consists of the following compo-
nents and their locations are shown in the
illustration.
1. SRS warning light
2. Airbag sensor
3. Driver ’s seat belt pretensioner assem-
bly
4. Airbag sensor assembly
The driver ’s seat belt pretensioner is con-
trolled by the airbag sensor assembly. The
airbag sensor assembly consists of a saf-
ing sensor and airbag sensor.
When the driver ’s seat belt pretensioner is
activated, an operating noise may be
heard and a small amount of smoke−like
gas may be released. This gas is harm-
less and does not indicate that a fire is
occurring.
Once the driver ’s seat belt pretensioner
has been activated, the seat belt retractor
remains locked.
If the vehicle is involved in multiple colli-
sions, the pretensioner will activate for the
first collision, but will not activate for the
second or subsequent collisions.
CAUTION
Observe the following precautions to
reduce the risk of injury in the event
of sudden braking or an accident.
Failure to do so may cause death or
serious injury.
DIf the pretensioner has activated,
the SRS warning light will come on.
In that case, the seat belt cannot
be used again and must be re-
placed at any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.
DDo not modify, remove, strike or
open the seat belt pretensioner as-
semblies, airbag sensor or sur-
rounding area or wiring. Consult
any authorized Toyota dealer or re-
pairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional about any re-
pair and modification.

NOTICE
Do not perform any of the following
changes without consulting any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped
professional. Such changes can inter-
fere with proper operation of the
driver ’s seat belt pretensioner in
some cases.
zInstallation of electronic devices
such as an RF−transmitter, cassette
tape player or compact disc player
zRepairs on or near the driver ’s seat
belt retractor assembly
zModification of the suspension sys-
tem
zModification of the front end struc-
ture

This driver ’s seat belt pretensionersystem
has a service reminder indicator to inform
the driver of operating problems. If any of
the following conditions occurs, this
indicates a malfunction of the airbag or
pretensioner. Contact any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, as
soon as possible to service the vehicle.
DThe light does not come on when the
engine switch is turned to the “ON”
position or remains on for more than
6 seconds or flashes.
DThe light comes on or starts flashing
while driving.
DIf the driver ’s seat belt does not retract
or cannot be pulled out due to a mal-
function or activation of the relevant
driver ’s seat belt pretensioner.

38SEATS, SEAT BELTS, STEERING WHEEL AND MIRRORS
In the following cases, contact any autho-
rized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional,
as soon as possible:
DThe front of the vehicle (shaded in the
illustration) was involved in an accident
that was not severe enough to cause
the driver ’s seat belt pretensioner to
operate.
DThe driver ’s seat belt pretensioner as-
sembly or surrounding area is
scratched, cracked, or otherwise dama-
ged.
The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys-
tem) airbag is designed to provide fur-
ther protection for the driver in addition
to the primary safety protection pro-
vided by the seat belt.
In response to a severe frontal impact,
the SRS airbag works together with the
seat belt to help reduce injury by inflating.
The SRS airbag helps to reduce injuries
mainly to the driver ’s head or chest
caused by directly hitting the steering
wheel.
Be sure to wear your seat belt properly.
CAUTION
The driver who is too close to the
steering wheel during airbag deploy-
ment can be killed or seriously in-
jured. Toyota strongly recommends
that:
DThe driver sit as far back as pos-
sible from the steering wheel while
still maintaining control of the ve-
hicle.
DAll vehicle occupants must be prop-
erly restrained using the available
seat belts.

This indicator comes on when the en-
gine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion. It goes off after about 6 seconds.
This means the SRS airbag is operating
properly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, airbag sensor,
driver ’s seat belt pretensioner assembly,
inflator, interconnecting wiring and power
sources. (For details, see “Service
reminder indicators and warning buzzer”
on page 73 in Section 1−5.)The SRS airbag system is designed to
activate in response to a severe frontal
impact within the shaded area between
the arrows in the illustration.
The SRS airbag will deploy in the event
of an impact that exceeds the set thresh-
old level (the level of force corresponding
to an approximately 20−30 km/h [12−18
mph] frontal collision with a fixed wall that
does not move or deform).
If the severity of the impact is below the
above threshold level, the SRS airbag
may not deploy.
However, this threshold velocity will be
considerably higher if the vehicle strikes
an object, such as a parked vehicle or
sign pole, which can move or deform on
impact, or if it is involved in an underride
collision (e.g. a collision in which the nose
of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under,
the bed of a truck, etc.).
It is possible that in some collisions at the
lower zone of airbag sensor detection and
activation the SRS airbag and seat belt
pretensioner will not operate all together.
For the safety of all occupants, always
wear your seat belts properly.
