N00560200034
The CVT will automati
cally and continuously
change its gear ratio depending on road anddriving conditions. This helps achieve smooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. Also you can manually shift up and shiftdown the transmission. Refer to “Sports mode” on page 5-72. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving.
According to the condi
tions, the transmission
will automatically shift to a lower gear ratio to achieve stronger engi
ne braking. This may
help reduce your need to use the service brake.
N00560301061
As an additional safe
ty precaution, models
equipped with a continuously variable trans-mission have a shift-lock device that holds the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position. To move the selector lever from the “P”(PARK) position to another position, follow the steps below. 1. Press and hold the brake pedal down. 2. Move the selector lever to the desiredposition.
The CVT selects an optimum ratio automati- cally when the selector lever is in the “D”(DRIVE) position, depending on the speed of the vehicle and the posit
ion of the accelerator
pedal.
NOTE
When the warning display and “SLOW DOWN” or the wa
rning display and
“SERVICE REQUIRED” appear on the information screen in the multi-informationdisplay, there could be
a malfunction in the
automatic transaxle. Refer to “Automatic transaxle: Warning di
splay” on page 5-62.

position while pressing the acceleratorpedal. This will cause the vehicle to “jump” forward or backward.NOTE
To prevent mistakes in operating the lever, make sure you stop brie
fly at each position.
After operating, check
the position in the
multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent the selector lever from being moved from the“P” (PARK) position. This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from m
oving. The engine can
be started from the “P” (PARK) position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the indicator will brink. In this case, immediat
ely park your vehicle
in a safe place and follow these procedures: [If the indicator blinks
rapidly (once per sec-

It is safe to continue driving if the indicator no longer blinks. If the indicator conti

CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overhea
ting. The engine con-
trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the e
ngine revolutions and
vehicle speed to decrease, In this case, take one of the following procedures.• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a
safe place, put the
selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer show

At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same
as the neutral position on
a manual transaxle and should be used whenthe vehicle is not m
oving for an extended
length of time during driving, such as in a traffic jam.
This position is used fo
r most city and high-
way driving. The transmission will automati- cally and continuously ch
ange its gear ratio
depending on road and driving conditions. Use when engine braking is needed, or for high-power sport drive.
This position is for driving up very steep hills and for engine braking at low speeds when driving down steep hills.

While the vehicle is stopped or being driven with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “L” (LOW) pos
ition manual shifting can be
selected by pulling one of the shift paddles towards you.
CAUTION Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is inmotion. If the lever is shifted into the “P”(PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion, the transmission may be damaged.
“N” NEUTRAL
WA R N I N G Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally
slip it into the “P”
(PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position, damaging the transmission. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope,
the engine should be
started in the “P” (P
ARK) position, not in
“N” (NEUTRAL) position.
To prevent rolling,
always keep your foot
on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in“N” (NEUTRAL) positi
on, or when shift-
ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion.

CAUTION To prevent transmission damage, never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion.

For vehicles equipped
with the sportronic

can be operated even wh
en the selector lever
is in the “D” (DRIVE) or “L” (LOW) posi- tion. Also, you can return to the “D” opera- tion in any of following ways. Whenreturning to “D” operati
on, the selector lever

position. • Pull the +(SHIFT UP) side sportronic steer- ing wheel paddle shifter forward (towardthe driver) for over 2 seconds. • Stop the vehicle When the paddle shifter is operated with the selector lever in th
e “L” (LOW) position,
gear is not shifted
because the selectable
shift range is limited.
SHIFT UP
SHIFT DOWN
CAUTION Upward shifts do not take place automati- cally in sports mode. The driver must make upward shifts in accordance with prevailing road conditions, making
sure the engine rpm
remains below the red zone on the tachome- ter. Repeated continuous op
eration of the selec-
tor lever or the spor
tronic steering wheel
paddle shifter will cont
inuously switch shift
position. On vehicles with a s
portronic steering wheel
paddle shifter, shift ranges may not change when the lateral paddle shifters are operated at the same time.NOTE
Shift ranges can only be
selected in a for-
ward direction from 1st to 6th. To reverse orpark the vehicle, move
the selector lever to
the “R” or “P” position.
To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform anupshift when the select
or lever or sportronic
steering wheel pa
ddle shifter is moved to the
“+(SHIFT UP)” positi
on at certain vehicle
speeds. Also, to prevent over-revving of theengine, the transmission
may refuse to per-
form a downshift when the shift lever or sportronic steering wh
eel paddle shifter is
moved to the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds.
When this happens, a
buzzer sounds to
indicate that a downshift is
not going to take place.
