For economical driving, there are some tech- nical requirements that have to be met. Theprerequisite for low fuel consumption is a
properly adjusted engine. In order to achieve longer life of the vehicle and the most eco- nomical operation, we recommend you tohave the vehicle checked at regular intervals in accordance with the service standards.
Fuel economy and generation of exhaust gas
and noise are highly influenced by personal
driving habits as well as the particular operat- ing conditions. The following points shouldbe observed in order to minimize wear of
brakes, tyres and engine as well as to reduce
environmental pollution.
Starting the engine
Avoid sudden acceleration and sudden starts,
as they will increase fuel consumption.
Shifting
Shift only at an appropriate speed and engine speed. Always use the highest shift position
possible.
Selecting the 4WD drive mode
(4WD vehicles)
The drive mode-selector should be set to
“2WD” when driving on normal roads and
express ways to obtain best possible fuel
economy.
City traffic
Frequent starting and stopping increases the
average fuel consumption. Use roads with smooth traffic flow whenever possible. When driving on congested roads, avoid use of a
low shift position at high engine speeds.
Idling
The vehicle consumes fuel even during
idling. Avoid extended idling whenever pos- sible.
Speed
At higher vehicle speed, more fuel is con- sumed. Avoid driving at full speed. Even a
slight release of the accelerator pedal will save a significant amount of fuel.
Tyre inflation pressure
Check the tyre inflation pressures at regular
intervals. Low tyre inflation pressure increa-ses road resistance and fuel consumption. In addition, low tyre pressures adversely affect
tyre wear and driving stability.
Cargo loads
Do not drive with unnecessary articles in the
luggage compartment. Especially during city
driving where frequent starting and stopping is necessary, the increased weight of the ve-
hicle will greatly affect fuel consumption. Al-
so avoid driving with unnecessary luggage or carriers, etc., on the roof; the increased air re- sistance will increase fuel consumption.
Cold engine starting
Starting of a cold engine consumes more fuel.
Unnecessary fuel consumption is also caused by keeping a hot engine running. After the
engine is started, commence driving as soon
as possible.
Air conditioning
The use of the air conditioning will increase the fuel consumption.

lCarefully wash the vehicle with water.
Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal in order to
dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, we recommend
you to have the brakes checked as soon as possible.
l Remove the insects, dried grass, etc.
clogging the radiator core.
l After driving through water, check the
engine, transmission and differential oil. If the oil or grease is milky or cloudy be-
cause of water contamination, it must be
replaced with new oil or grease.
l Check the inside of the vehicle. If water
entry is found, dry the carpet etc.
l Inspect the headlamps, If the headlamp
bulb is flooded with water, we recom-
mend you to have it drained.Cautions on handling of 4-

Tyres and wheels
Since the driving torque can be applied to the
4 wheels, the driving performance of the ve- hicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is
greatly affected by the condition of the tyres.
Pay close attention to the tyres.
l Install only the specified tyres on all
wheels. Refer to “Tyres and wheels” on page 11-12.
l Be sure all 4 tyres and wheels are the
same size and type.
When it is necessary to replace any of
the tyres or wheels, replace all 4 tyres.
l All tyres should be rotated before the
wear difference between the front and
rear tyres is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expec- ted if there is a difference in wear between tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 10-14.
l Check the tyre inflation pressure regular-
ly.CAUTIONl Always use tyres of the same size, same
type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres of differentsize, type, brands or degree of wear, will in-
crease the differential oil temperature, result-
ing in possible damage to the driving sys-
tem. Further, the drive train will be subjec- ted to excessive loading possibly leading tooil leakage, component seizure, or other seri-
ous faults.TowingCAUTIONl Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the
front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrated. This could result in
damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing.
If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment.
l Even in “2WD” drive mode, the vehicle can-
not be towed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.

page 10-13.)CAUTIONl The supplied compressor is designed only
for inflation of passenger vehicle tyres.
l The compressor is designed to run on a vehi-
cle’s 12 V power supply. Do not connect itto any other power source.
l The compressor is not waterproof. If you use
it in rain, make sure water does not get on it.
l Any sand or dust sucked into the compressor
could make the compressor break down. Do not place the compressor directly on anysandy or dusty surface when using it.CAUTIONl Do not disassemble or modify the compres-
sor. Also, do not subject the air pressure
gauge to shock. It could malfunction.
15. Check and adjust the tyre pressure with
reference to the air pressure gauge on the
compressor. If you overinflate the tyre, release air by loosening the hose’s end
fitting.
If there is a gap between the tyre and
wheel because the tyre has moved in-
ward from the wheel rim, press the pe- riphery of the tyre towards the wheel to
close the gap before running the com- pressor. (With no gaps, the tyre pressure
will rise.)
CAUTIONl Be careful not to get your fingers trapped be-
tween the tyre and wheel as the tyre inflates.
l The surface of the compressor will get hot
while the compressor is running. Do not
keep the compressor running continuously for more than 10 minutes. After using the
compressor, wait for the compressor to cool before using it again.CAUTIONl If the compressor becomes sluggish or hot
while operating, it is overheating. Immedi-
ately place the switch in the OFF position and let the compressor cool down for at least30 minutes.NOTEl If the tyre pressure does not rise to the speci-
fied level within 10 minutes, the tyre may be
so severely damaged that the tyre sealant
cannot be used to effect an emergency re- pair. Please contact a MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point or an-
other specialist in this event.
16. Turn OFF the compressor switch, then
pull the power cord plug out of the sock- et.
NOTEl Simply putting sealant and air into the tyre
using the tyre repair kit does not seal the
puncture hole. Air will leak through the puncture hole until the emergency repair procedure is completed (through step 19 of
these instructions).
17. Affix the speed restriction sticker (R) to
the steering wheel at the position shown
in the illustration. Then immediately

NOTElThe chocks shown in the illustration do not
come with your vehicle. It is recommended
that you keep one in the vehicle for use if needed.
l If chocks or blocks are not available, use
stones or any other objects that are large enough to hold the wheel in position.
6. Get the jack bar and wheel nut wrench
ready.
Refer to “Tool and jack” on page 8-06.
Spare wheel information*

Check the air pressure of the spare tyre fre- quently and make sure it is ready for emer-
gency use at any time.
Maintaining the spare wheel at the highest specified air pressure will ensure that it can
always be used under any conditions (city/ high-speed driving, varying load weight,etc.).
The spare wheel is stored beneath the lug-
gage floor board of the luggage compartment.
CAUTIONl The pressure should be periodically checked
and maintained at the specified pressure while the tyre is stowed.
Driving with an insufficient tyre pressure
can lead to an accident. If you have no choice but to drive with an insufficient tyre
pressure, keep your speed down and inflate the tyre to the correct pressure as soon as
possible. (Refer to “Tyre inflation pressures”
on page 10-13.)
l When the tread wear indicators appear, the
tyre must be replaced.
Refer to “Wheel condition” on page 10-13.
Temporary spare wheel (spare
wheel with a speed limit label)*
The T155/90D16 or T125/90D16 size spare
wheel is stored beneath the luggage floor
board of the luggage compartment. It is de- signed to save space in the luggage compart-ment and its light weight makes it easy to
handle in the event of a flat tyre.
CAUTIONl The temporary spare wheel is for temporary
use only and should be removed as soon as
the original wheel can be repaired or re-
placed.
l The vehicle must not be driven at speeds in
excess of 80 km/h (50 mph) while using thetemporary spare wheel.CAUTIONl The
T155/90D16 or T125/90D16 size spare
wheel is not as good as a standard wheel in controllability and stability. When the tem-
porary spare wheel is used, avoid quick starts, sudden braking and sharp steering.
The tyre size of the 215/65R16 size tempo-
rary spare tyre is different from that of the standard tyre. When the temporary spare
tyre is used, avoid quick starts, sudden brak- ing and sharp steering.
l The temporary spare wheel is specifically
designed for your vehicle and it should not
be used on any other vehicle.
When you purchase a 215/65R16 size spare wheel, be sure to purchase the type designed
specially for your vehicle from your
MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Serv-
ice Point.
l Do not use tyre chains with your temporary
spare wheel. Because of the smaller tyresize, a tyre chain will not fit properly. This
could cause damage to the wheel and result in loss of the chain.
If a front tyre becomes flat when using tyre
chains, first replace a rear wheel with the temporary spare wheel and then use the re-
moved rear wheel to replace the flat front
wheel so that you can continue to use the chains.
How to change a tyre

Initially tighten the wheel nuts until
the tapered area (A) of the nuts
lightly touches the wheel hole seat
area (B) enough to keep the tyre from wobbling.CAUTIONl Never apply oil to either the wheel bolts or
the nuts, or they will tighten too much.NOTEl Flange nuts can be temporarily used on the
steel wheel, but return to the original wheel and tyre as soon as possible.
l If all 4 aluminium wheels are changed to
steel wheels, e.g. when fitting winter tyres,
use tapered nuts.8. Lower the vehicle slowly by rotating the
wheel nut wrench anticlockwise until the
tyre touches the ground.
9. Tighten the nuts in the order shown in
the illustration until each nut has been tightened to the torque listed here.
Tightening torque 88 to 108 Nm
(Achieved by applying force of 350 to
420 N at end of wheel nut wrench sup- plied with vehicle)CAUTIONl Never use your foot or a pipe extension for
extra force in the wheel nut wrench. If you
do so, you will tighten the nut too much.
10. If the vehicle has a wheel cover, install
it.
Refer to “Wheel covers” on page 8-19.
11. Lower and remove the jack, then store
the jack, flat tyre, and chocks. Have your
damaged tyre repaired as soon as possi- ble.
12. Check your tyre inflation pressure at the
next gasstation.

2.Cover the end of the jack bar (C) with
cloth and use it to remove the lid from the rear bumper.
3. Use the wheel nut wrench (D) to firmly
attach the towing hook.
4. Always attach the tow rope to the towing hook. Otherwise, the instructions are the
same as for “When being towed by an- other vehicle”.
5. When finished towing, remove the tow-
ing hook, and stow it in the specified lo- cation.

on page 8-06.
When installing the bumper lid, align the
hook with the cut out area on the vehi-
cle, and firmly insert.NOTEl Do not tow a vehicle heavier than your own

On a flooded road
l Avoid flooded roads. Water could enter
the brake discs, resulting in temporarily ineffective brakes. In such cases, lightly
depress the brake pedal to see if the
brakes operate properly. If they do not,
lightly depress the pedal several times while driving in order to dry the brake
pads.
l When driving in rain or on a road with
many puddles a layer of water may form
between the tyres and the road surface.
This reduces a tyre’s frictional resistance on the road, resulting in loss of steering
stability and braking capability.
To cope with this, observe the following items:
(a)Drive your vehicle at slow
speed. (b)Do not drive on worn tyres. (c)Always maintain the specified tyre inflation pressures.
