GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNINGS
Extended idling at high enginespeeds can produce very hightemperatures in the engine andexhaust system, creating the risk of fire orother damage.
Do not park, idle or drive your vehicleon dry grass or other dry groundcover. The emission system heats upthe engine compartment and exhaustsystem, creating the risk of fire.
Do not start the engine in a closedgarage or in other enclosed areas.Exhaust fumes can be toxic. Alwaysopen the garage door before you start theengine.
If you smell exhaust fumes insideyour vehicle, have your vehiclechecked by an authorized dealerimmediately. Do not drive your vehicle ifyou smell exhaust fumes.
If you disconnect the battery, your vehiclemay exhibit some unusual drivingcharacteristics for approximately 5 miles(8 kilometers) after you reconnect it. Thisis because the engine management systemmust realign itself with the engine. You candisregard any unusual drivingcharacteristics during this period.
The powertrain control system meets allCanadian interference-causing equipmentstandard requirements regulating theimpulse electrical field or radio noise.
When you start the engine, avoid pressingthe accelerator pedal before and duringoperation. Only use the accelerator pedalwhen you have difficulty starting theengine.
IGNITION SWITCH
0 (off) - The ignition is off.
Note:When you switch the ignition off andleave your vehicle, do not leave your key inthe ignition. This could cause your vehiclebattery to lose charge.
I (accessory) - Allows the electricalaccessories, such as the radio, to operatewhile the engine is not running.
Note:Do not leave the ignition key in thisposition for too long. This could cause yourvehicle battery to lose charge.
II (on) - All electrical circuits areoperational and the warning lamps andindicators illuminate.
III (start) - cranks the engine.
KEYLESS STARTING
Note:The keyless starting system may notfunction if the key is close to metal objectsor electronic devices such as cellularphones.
Note:A valid key must be located insideyour vehicle to switch the ignition on andstart the engine.

Ignition Modes
The keyless starting system has threemodes:
Off: Turns the ignition off.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button oncewhen the ignition is in the on mode, orwhen the engine is running but thevehicle is not moving.
On: All electrical circuits are operationaland the warning lamps and indicatorsilluminate.
•Without applying the brake pedal,press and release the button once.
Start: Starts the engine.
•Press the brake pedal, and then pressthe button for any length of time. Anindicator light on the button illuminateswhen then ignition is on and when theengine starts.
STARTING A GASOLINE
ENGINE
When you start the engine, the idle speedincreases, this helps to warm up theengine. If the engine idle speed does notslow down automatically, have yourvehicle checked by an authorized dealer.
Note:You can crank the engine for a totalof 60 seconds (without the engine starting)before the starting system temporarilydisables. The 60 seconds does not have tobe all at once. For example, if you crank theengine three times for 20 seconds eachtime, without the engine starting, youreached the 60-second time limit. Amessage appears in the information displayalerting you that you exceeded the crankingtime. You cannot attempt to start the enginefor at least 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, youare limited to a 15-second engine crankingtime. You need to wait 60 minutes beforeyou can crank the engine for 60 secondsagain.
Before starting the engine, check thefollowing:
•Make sure all occupants have fastenedtheir safety belts.
•Make sure the headlamps andelectrical accessories are off.
•Make sure the parking brake is on.
•Move the transmission selector leverto position P (automatic transmission)or neutral (manual transmission).
•Turn the ignition key to position II. Ifyour vehicle is equipped with a keylessignition, see the following instructions.
Vehicles with an Ignition Key
Note:Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
1.Fully press the brake pedal. If yourvehicle is equipped with a manualtransmission, fully press the clutchpedal also.
2.Turn the key to position III to start theengine. Release the key when theengine starts.
Note:The engine may continue crankingfor up to 15 seconds or until it starts.
Note:If you cannot start the engine on thefirst try, wait for a short period and try again.

2.When your vehicle has stopped, movethe transmission selector lever toposition P.
3.Press and hold the button for onesecond, or press it three times withintwo seconds.
4.Apply the parking brake.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING
If you smell exhaust fumes insideyour vehicle, have your vehiclechecked by your authorized dealerimmediately. Do not drive your vehicle ifyou smell exhaust fumes. Carbonmonoxide is present in exhaust fumes.Take precautions to avoid its dangerouseffects.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and the leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of thefollowing:
•Open the windows at least 1 inch (2.5centimeters)
•Set your climate control to outside air.
ENGINE BLOCK HEATER (IF
EQUIPPED)
WARNINGS
Failure to follow engine block heaterinstructions could result in propertydamage or serious personal injury.
Do not use your heater withungrounded electrical systems ortwo-pronged adapters. There is a riskof electrical shock.
Note:The heater is most effective whenoutdoor temperatures are below 0°F(-18°C).
The heater acts as a starting aid bywarming the engine coolant. This allowsthe climate control system to respondquickly. The equipment includes a heaterelement (installed in the engine block) anda wire harness. You can connect thesystem to a grounded 120-volt ACelectrical source.
We recommend that you do the followingfor a safe and correct operation:
•Use a 16-gauge outdoor extension cordthat is product certified byUnderwriter’s Laboratory (UL) orCanadian Standards Association(CSA). This extension cord must besuitable for use outdoors, in coldtemperatures, and be clearly markedSuitable for Use with OutdoorAppliances. Do not use an indoorextension cord outdoors. This couldresult in an electric shock or become afire hazard.
•Use as short an extension cord aspossible.
•Do not use multiple extension cords.
•Make sure that when in operation, theextension cord plug and heater cordplug connections are free and clear ofwater. This could cause an electricshock or fire.
•Make sure your vehicle is parked in aclean area, clear of combustibles.
•Make sure the heater, heater cord andextension cord are firmly connected.
•Check for heat anywhere in theelectrical hookup once the system hasbeen operating for approximately 30minutes.
•Make sure the heater system ischecked for proper operation beforewinter.

Note:Allow about five to ten seconds afterpumping fuel before removing the fuel fillernozzle. This allows residual fuel to drainback into the fuel tank and not spill onto thevehicle.
4.After you have stopped pumping fuel,slowly remove the fuel filler nozzle.
Note:A fuel spillage concern may occur ifoverfilling the fuel tank. Do not overfill thetank to the point that the fuel is able tobypass the fuel filler nozzle. The overfilledfuel may run down the drain located belowand in front of the fuel filler door.
5.To close the fuel filler door, press thecenter-rear edge of the fuel filler doorand then release. The fuel door willlatch closed.
If the fuel fill inlet did not close properly, aCheck Fuel Fill Inlet message mayappear on the instrument cluster.
At the next opportunity, do the following:
1.Safely pull off the road.
2.Put the vehicle in position P and switchthe ignition off.
3.Open the fuel filler door and removeany visible debris from the fuel fillopening.
4.Insert the fuel fill nozzle, or the fuel fillfunnel provided with the vehicle,several times to allow the inlet to closeproperly. This will dislodge any debrispreventing the inlet from sealing.
If this action corrects the problem, themessage may not reset immediately. Itmay take several driving cycles for themessage to turn off. A driving cycleconsists of an engine start-up (after fouror more hours with the engine off) followedby city or highway driving. Continuing todrive with the message on may cause theservice engine soon lamp to turn on aswell.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
Note:The amount of usable fuel in theempty reserve varies and should not berelied upon to increase driving range. Whenrefueling your vehicle after the fuel gaugeindicates empty, you might not be able torefuel the full amount of the advertisedcapacity of the fuel tank due to the emptyreserve still present in the tank.
Empty reserve is the amount of fuelremaining in the tank after the fuel gaugeindicates empty. Do not rely on this fuel fordriving. The usable capacity of the fueltank is the amount of fuel that can be putinto the tank after the gauge indicatesempty. The advertised capacity is the totalfuel tank size – it is the combined usablecapacity plus the empty reserve.
Filling the Tank
For consistent results when filling the fueltank:
•Turn the ignition off before fueling; aninaccurate reading results if the engineis left running.
•Use the same fill rate(low-medium-high) each time the tankis filled.
•Allow no more than two automaticclick-offs when filling.
Results are most accurate when the fillingmethod is consistent.
