If the ~ (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
t he vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
cou ld cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding . Drive caref ully to
the nearest a uthorized Audi dea ler or oth­
er qualified workshop and have the mal­
function corrected.

ABS/(8) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light rlB (USA mod­
els)
1iJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
- The warn ing/indi cator lig ht does not ill umi ­
nate when you switch the ignition on.
- T he warn ing/indi cator lig ht does not go out
after a few seconds .
- T he wa rn ing/ ind icator lig ht ill uminates
wh ile driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . T he mes­
sage
Stabilization control (ESC /AB S): Fault!

Malfunction in th e ele ctronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system

See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
A WARNING

- I f the rlB (USA mode ls)/ [IJ (Canada
models) warning light does not go ou t,
or if it comes on while dr iving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi-
cle can then be stopped only w it h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS prov ides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos­
sible .
-USA models: If the ~ warning light,
the:
GJ warning light and the rlB warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
bra king. Rear wheel lock-up can ca us e
loss of vehicle control and an a ccident.
Have your vehi cle repaired immediately
by your authorized A udi dealer or a quali­
fied workshop . Drive slow ly and avoid
sudden, ha rd brake applications.

If the warn ing light illuminates, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­
ed. On USA models the warning light

EPC Electronic power control
App lies to vehicles: with gaso line engine
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .
The ~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check .
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­ sible by your authorized Aud i dealer or
qualified repair facility.

o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
T he Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is pa rt
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbo l
¢.j lights up when the ignition is
switched on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is work ing
properly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.

!?) Engine speed limitation
lfl Engine speed maximum XXXX RPM
The eng ine speed is automatically limited to
the speed displayed in the driver information
system. This protects the engine from over ­
heating.
T he eng ine speed limitation deactivates once
the engine is no longer in the critical tempera­
ture range and you have re leased the accelera­
tor pedal once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated
by an engine control malfunction, the indica­
tor light ~ also turns on. Make s ure that the
speed does not go above the speed displayed.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
@ Tips
The engine speed is limited when the en­
gine is cold - the full engine output is not
available . When the engine is at operating
temperature, the red area in the tachome­
ter moves to a h igher RPM range.

- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle while driv­
ing or when accelerating or when apply­
ing the brakes or when driving around a
corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.
-Always keep the lid of the compartment
for (sun)glasses* closed while driving to
reduce the risk of injury during a sudden
braking maneuver or in the event of an
accident.
- Any articles of clothing that you have
hung up must not interfere with the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks.
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially
If the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passen­
gers inside the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of personal injury in an
accident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while driving.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS
~ page 164, Important safety instruc­
tions on the side airbag system.
-Hang clothes in such a way that they do
not impair the driver's vision.
- The coat hooks must only be used for
lightweight clothing. Do not leave any
heavy or sharp edged objects in the pock- ets which may interfere with the side cur­
tain airbag deployment and can cause
personal
injury in a crash.
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging
clothing on the coat hooks as this can in­
terfere with proper deployment of the side curtain airbags in an accident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks, as they could cause personal in­
jury in a sudden stop.

Objects located on the rear shelf that rub
against the rear window could damage the heating wires for the rear window defog-
ger .
Roof rack
Description and mounting locations
Additional cargo can be carried with a roof
luggage rack.

vided by the roof rack manufacturer when installing the roof rack system.
If luggage or cargo is to be carried on the
roof, you must observe the following:
- Only use roof racks approved for your vehi­
cle. These approved roof racks are the basis
for a complete roof rack system. Additional
attachments or carrier systems are needed
to transport luggage and sports equipment.

the sta rting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never t urn off the engine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running . If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usua l­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
ser ious injur ies .

-Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating temperature -other ­
wise yo u risk eng ine damage.
- The eng ine cannot be started by pushing
or tow ing the veh icle.
(D Tips
- After a cold engine is started, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
ca use oil pressure mus t fi rst bu ild up in
the hyd raulic valve adjusters . This is nor­
mal and not a ca use for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignit ion
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certai n pe riod of time. P lease
note tha t electr ica l equipment s uch as
exterior lights wi ll switch off as well
when that happens.

Ste ering lock
T he s teering locks when yo u tur n the engine

ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi­
t ion. The engine stops if you press the
I S TAR T ENG IN E ST OP I button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/ h) .
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power stee ring

the sun's rays.

Do not stop the engine immediately after
hard o r extended driving. Keep the engine
running for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

tional hand brake, the electromechan ical
parking brake provides var ious convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automat ically releasing the park­

- When starting on inclines, the starting as ­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until suff icient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels.

-Yo u can apply the parking brake at any
time -even with the ignition switched
off. The ignition must be on and the
brake pedal must be pressed in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at

bad, a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break
away· risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed.
The speed warning system wa rns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set. You will hear a warn ing tone when
your speed exceeds the stored value by ap­
proximately 3 mph (3 km/h). An indicator
light . (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in
the instrument cluster display also turns on at
the same time. The indicator light ••
turns off when the speed decreases below the
stored maximum speed .
Setting a threshold is recommended if you
would like to be reminded when you reach a certain max imum speed . Situations where you
may want to do so include driving in a country
with a general speed limit or if there is a
specified maximum speed for winter tires.
@ Tips
Even though your vehicle is equipped with
a speed warning system, you should st ill
watch the speedometer to make sure you
are not driving faster than the speed limit.
Setting the threshold
You can set, change and delete the threshold
in the MMI.

You can set any threshold between 20 mph
(30 km/h) and lS0 mph (240 km/h) . Settings
can each be adjusted in inc rements of 6 mph

- Turn off the cruise control temporar ily
when ente ring turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construct ion zones.
- Please note that inadvertent ly "rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because t he cr uise con trol is overridden
by the d river 's a cce le rat ion.
- If a bra ke system malfunction such as
overheat ing occurs when the cru ise con­
t ro l system is sw itched on, the braking
f unction in the system may be switched
off. The other cruise control f unctions re ­
ma in active as long as the indicator light
[~ jrn~14 (US models) !El (Canad ian mod­
els) is on.
The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes decelerate a utomat ica lly.
