Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 29.
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 34.
A ll the doors and the fron t lid are loc ked by
the central locking system when you lock the
ve hicl e.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
cha nged in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage22.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he d river's doo r lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unloc king the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec
onds t o open a door or the front lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The front lid can be locked or u nlocked e it h er
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the front lid, to open it,
the lid handle needs to be p ressed.
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in t he d rivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the front lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ke d.
- The ant i-theft alarm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and the anti-theft a la rm system read
iness light, located in the center of the in
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the a ir vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automatic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve
hicle doors and the fron t lid when yo u drive
faster than
9 mph (15 km/h).
You can unl ock t he vehi cle from the inside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un lock pa rt of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door handle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an autho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

_& WARNING
- When you lock yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody- espec ia lly children -shou ld re
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock th e vehicle from the out
side th e wi ndows canno t be o pened from
the inside.
- W hen you leav e th e ve hicle, always r e
move the ign ition key an d take it with
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil
d ren, f or example) from a ccidenta lly be
i ng l ocke d in the vehicle s hould they
accidentally press the power locking
switch in one of the doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- The dr iver's door can be locked and un
locked with the key if the power locking
system fails. The passenger's door can be locked manually
o page 33.
- In the event of a crash with airbag de
ployment all locked doors will be auto
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- The anti-theft alarm system cannot be
activated if the power locking system is
not activated.
- You are well advised not to keep valua
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

Whether only the driver's door or the entire
vehicle is unlocked when the opening button

PANIC Button
.,. Push the red button @to activate the panic
function . The horn sounds and the turn sig
nals flash.
.. Push the button @again to deact ivate the
pan ic function.
The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- selectively un lock the front lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec
tive range depends on several things . Remem
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decreases.
The remote-contro l key contains a fo ld-out
key that you can use to manually lock or un
lock the vehicle and to start the engine.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your authorized Audi dea ler . Only then can
you use the key again.

- The remote control key is automatica lly
deactivated when the ignition is sw itch
ed on.
- The operation of the remote contro l key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the vehicle work ing in the same frequen
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip
ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func
tion is working, you shou ld always keep
you r eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
proper ly locked.
- Do not use the remote control if you are
i ns ide the car, otherwise you may unin
tentiona lly lock the vehi cle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door . In case this happens anyhow, push
the un lock button @.
- Use the panic funct ion only if you are in
an emergency situation.
Resetting the remote control
The remote control must be reset if the vehi
cle does not unlock .
• Pres s the unlock button ffi on the remo te
control.
• Manua lly unlock the drive r's door lock with
the mechanical key within 30 seconds.
• Press e ither the lock-
ffi or the unlock @ but
ton to complete the reset sequence.
Operating locks with the key
To lock and unlock the vehicle from the out
side, turn the key in the lock of the driver's
door.

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switch .

• Press the front lid closed carefully using
both hands unti l it latches audibly¢ &,.
A WARNING
A front lid that is not comp lete ly latched
could fly up and block your view while driv
ing.
- When you close the front lid, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly
engaged. The lid should be flush with the
surround ing vehicle body parts.
- If you not ice wh ile driving that the lid is
not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es
pecially with the front lid left open. A
child could c rawl into the luggage com
par tment and pull the lid s hut, becoming
tr apped and unable to get out. To re duce
the risk of personal i njury, never let chil
dren p lay in or around your vehicle . Al
ways keep the front lid as we ll as the ve
hicle doors closed when not in use.

Ma ke s ure no objects are protruding above
t he edge o f the luggage compartment.
Otherwise, the front lid could be dam
aged.
(D Tips
I f the front lid is open or not p roperly
locked w hen the ignit ion is tu rned on, the
door and front lid warning appea rs in the
instrument cluster disp lay.
Emergency release for front lid
If the front lid cannot be opened, an emer
gency release is provided .

Anti-theft alarm
system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any
one attempts to break into the vehicle .

The anti -theft alarm system triggers an audi

How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti -theft alarm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manua lly us-
ing the fo ld-out key, or when you use the re
mote control. The system is activated approxi
mately 30 seconds after the vehicle is locked . .,,_
The indicator li ght q fig . 30 starts flashing
rapidly fo r 2 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti -the ft alarm system is switched off
on ly when you unlock your vehicle. If yo u do
not open a door with in 30 seconds after yo u
have unlocked with the remote control, the
ve hicle w ill lock itse lf again a utomat ically.
When will the anti theft alarm system be
triggered?
When the veh icle is locked, the alarm system
monitors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:
- engine compartment
- luggage compartment
- doo rs
- ignition
When the system is activated , the alarm wi ll
be tr iggered if one of the doors, the eng ine
compa rtment lid or the front lid are opened .
The anti-theft a larm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected .
You can a lso trigger the alarm by pressing t he
PANIC button on your remote-control key .
This will a lert other peop le in case of emer
gency . Press the
PANIC button again to tu rn
off the alarm .
How is the ant i-theft alarm switched off
when triggered?
The alarm system is switched off w hen you
u nl ock the vehicle us ing the remote-control
key or when the ignition is sw itche d on . T he
a larm w ill also switch itse lf off when it comes
t o the en d of its cycle.
Emergency flasher
The emergency f lasher w ill blink b riefly w hen
the doors, e ngine compartment l id and fron t
lid are properly clos ed .
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, e ngine compartment l id and front
l id to make sure t hey a re p roperly closed . If

you close a doo r, the eng ine compartment lid
o r the fro nt lid with the anti -theft alarm
switched on, the eme rgency flashers w ill blink
o nl y after yo u have closed the door or lid.
@ Tips
For the a nti-theft alarm system to f unc
tion properly, make sure all ve hicle do ors
and windows are closed bef ore leaving t he
vehicle.

Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with parking system advanced
There is an error in the system if the LED on
the
§J switch is blinking and you hear a con
tinuous alarm for a few seconds after switch ing on the parking system or when the park
ing system is already act ivated. Have your au
thor ized Audi dealer correct the error.
(D Tips
If an error has occurred before the ignition
is turned off, the LED in the~ switch w ill
blink the next time the ignit ion is switched
on, reverse gear selected, and the acoustic
pa rking system is activa ted.

A WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system, there is the r isk of
inju ry, acc ident and
even fire. Read and
heed the following WARNINGS:
- Always wear eye protection . Do not let
battery acid or any lead part icles get on
yo ur sk in or cloth ing . Sh ield your eyes .
Explosive gases can cause blindness or
other injury.
- Battery acid contains sulfur ic acid. Sulfu
ric acid can cause blindness and
severe
burns.
- Always wear gloves and eye protection .
Do not tilt the battery because ac id
could lea k out of the vent ilation open
ings.
- If you get battery acid in yo ur eyes or
on your sk in, immediately rinse with
cold water for severa l m inutes and get
medical attention.
- I f you should ingest any battery acid,
see k medical attention immediately.
- Do not expose the battery to an open
flame, electric sparks o r an open ligh t.
- Do not smoke .
- Do not interchange the positive and neg-
ative cables .
- When working on the battery, be sure
not to short-circuit the terminals with
tools or other metal objects. This would
cause the battery to heat up
very quickly,
wh ich could lead to damage or e xplosion
and personal injury.
- When a battery is charged, it produces
hydrogen gas which is explosive and
cou ld cause persona l injury. -
Always keep the battery well out of the
reach of children.
- Before work is done on the elect rical sys
tem, disconnect the negative ground ca
ble.
- Before performing any work on the e lec
tr ica l system, switch off the engine and
ignit ion as well as any electrical equip
ment. The negative cable on the battery
must be disconnected .
If you are just go
i n g to replace a light bulb, then it is
enough to switch off the lights.
- Before disconnecting the battery, switch
off the anti-theft alarm system! Other
wise you wi ll set off the alarm.
- When disconnecting the battery, first
d isconnect the negat ive cab le and then
the posit ive cab le.
- Before reconnecting the batte ry, ma ke
sure all e lectr ica l consumers are sw itch
ed off. Reconne ct the pos it ive cable first
an d then the negative cable. Never inter
change the cables -this could start a fi re!
- Never ch arge a fro zen or a thawed-out
battery. I t could exp lode! I f a battery has
frozen, then it must be replaced . A dis
charged batte ry can freeze
over at 32 °F
(0 oc).
- Make sure the vent hose is always attach
ed to the opening on the s ide of the bat
tery .
- Never use batteries which a re damaged .
Danger of explosion! Always replace a
damaged battery .
