@ Master key with remote control
You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet key
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock . If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad ­
vi sed to tu rn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the front lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .
© Emergency key
The emergency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced.
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immed iate ly to have the
Lost key disa­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you .
If a key is lost, you should report it to your in­
surance company .
Registered keys
You can inquire about the number of remote
master keys registered to your vehicle
c:> page 22 . In this way , you can be certain of
obtaining all the remote master keys if you
purchase a used vehicle.
State of master key battery
When a button is pressed, the check light

come on or flash, the battery is dead and has
to be replaced.

- Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you or result in t heft or damage the vehi­
cle. A lways lock all doors and take the
key.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in serious in­
Jury.

- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
so und . This is your reminder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, replacement keys
are only available from Audi dealers.

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
The power lock ing system in your ve hicle in­
corporates the fo llow ing funct ions:
- Central locking function
- Remote con tro l feature q page 29.
- Anti -Theft Alarm Sys tem q page 34.
A ll the doors and the fron t lid are loc ked by
the central locking system when you lock the
ve hicl e.
The unlocking a nd lock ing mode * can be
cha nged in t he d river i nfo rmation system
qpage22.
Unlocking the vehicle
You can un lock the vehicle from outs ide e ither
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in t he d river's doo r lock.
When you
unlock your veh icle:
- The anti-theft alarm system is deactivated br iefly.
- The veh icle inter ior lights ill uminate for ap­
proximate ly 30 seconds.
- All turn signa l lights will f lash twice w hen
the car is unlocked.
- After unloc king the vehicle, yo u have 30 sec­
onds t o open a door or the front lid. After 30
seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the ant i-theft a larm system activates again.
The front lid can be locked or u nlocked e it h er
by using the remote control
or by insert ing
a nd turning the key in the driver's door lock.
Unlock ing the ve hicle w ith the remote co ntrol
c::::5 will only unlock the front lid, to open it,
the lid handle needs to be p ressed.
Locking the vehicle
You can lock the vehicle from o utside e ither by
using the remote control
or by insert ing and
turning the key in t he d rivers's door lock.
When you
lo ck the vehicle:
- All doors and the front lid are locked. -
All turn signal lights wi ll flash once when
the car is loc ke d.
- The ant i-theft alarm system is ac tiva ted.
The ho rn of the anti -theft alarm system wi ll
sound and the anti-theft a la rm system read­
iness light, located in the center of the in­
strument panel be low the w indshield on the
r ight side of the a ir vent, will start to blink.
- The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Automatic lock ing*
T he au tom atic locking fea ture locks a ll the ve­
hicle doors and the fron t lid when yo u drive
faster than
9 mph (15 km/h).
You can unl ock t he vehi cle from the inside by:
- remov ing the key from the igni tion swi tc h
(the vehi cle w ill automatically u nlock itself)
or
- pressi ng the un lock pa rt of the power lock
sw itch

pull ing the door handle (to open the doo r).
If you wish, yo u can have an autho rized Aud i
dealer convert your power doo r lock system to
automat ic locking.

- When you lock yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody- espec ia lly children -shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock th e vehicle from the out­
side th e wi ndows canno t be o pened from
the inside.
- W hen you leav e th e ve hicle, always r e­
move the ign ition key an d take it with
you. This will preven t passe ngers (chil­
d ren, f or example) from a ccidenta lly be­
i ng l ocke d in the vehicle s hould they

accidentally press the power locking
switch in one of the doors.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- The dr iver's door can be locked and un­
locked with the key if the power locking
system fails. The passenger's door can be locked manually
o page 33.
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- The anti-theft alarm system cannot be
activated if the power locking system is
not activated.
- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

PANIC Button
.,. Push the red button @to activate the panic
function . The horn sounds and the turn sig­
nals flash.
.. Push the button @again to deact ivate the
pan ic function.
The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- selectively un lock the front lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec­
tive range depends on several things . Remem­
ber, if the battery is weak, the effective range
decreases.
The remote-contro l key contains a fo ld-out
key that you can use to manually lock or un­
lock the vehicle and to start the engine.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your authorized Audi dea ler . Only then can
you use the key again.

• Press the front lid closed carefully using
both hands unti l it latches audibly¢ &,.
A WARNING
A front lid that is not comp lete ly latched
could fly up and block your view while driv­
ing.
- When you close the front lid, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly
engaged. The lid should be flush with the
surround ing vehicle body parts.
- If you not ice wh ile driving that the lid is
not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the front lid left open. A
child could c rawl into the luggage com­
par tment and pull the lid s hut, becoming
tr apped and unable to get out. To re duce
the risk of personal i njury, never let chil­
dren p lay in or around your vehicle . Al ­
ways keep the front lid as we ll as the ve­
hicle doors closed when not in use.

Ma ke s ure no objects are protruding above
t he edge o f the luggage compartment.
Otherwise, the front lid could be dam­
aged.
(D Tips
I f the front lid is open or not p roperly
locked w hen the ignit ion is tu rned on, the
door and front lid warning appea rs in the
instrument cluster disp lay.
Emergency release for front lid
If the front lid cannot be opened, an emer­
gency release is provided .

Anti-theft alarm
system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any­
one attempts to break into the vehicle .

The anti -theft alarm system triggers an audi­
ble a larm and turns on the emerge ncy flasher
if an unauthorize d interference with the vehi­
cle is sensed by the system .
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti -theft alarm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manua lly us-
ing the fo ld-out key, or when you use the re­
mote control. The system is activated approxi­
mately 30 seconds after the vehicle is locked . .,,_

A WARNING
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle
keys . Unsupervised use of the keys can
result in starting of the engine and use
of vehicle systems such as powe r win­
dows , etc. which cou ld result in serio us
injury.
- Remember -you can still open or close
the power w indows for abou t ten m i­
nutes after the ignition is sw itched off .
Only when either of the front doors are
opened are the power windows switched
off.
- Be careful when closing the windows .
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever
you leave your vehicle.
- If you lock your vehicle from the outside,
no one, especia lly children, sho uld re­
ma in in the vehicle .
- Do not stick anything on the windows or
the windsh ield that may interfere with
the driver's fie ld of vision.
@ Tips
- When the doors are opened, the w in­
dows are a utomatica lly lowered 0.4 in
(10 mm) .
Reactivating the system after battery
disconnection
If the vehicle ba ttery i s disconnected and
then reconnected, the automatic closing and
opening function will not work until it is reac ­
tivated .
• Pull and hold the power w indow swi tch un til
the window is completely clo sed .
• Release the switch and pull it again for one
second.

you will be out of position. Always adjust
the driver's or front passenger seat when
the vehicle is not moving.
- Be careful when adjusting the seat
height. Check to see that no one is in the
way, or serious injury could result!
- Because the seats can be electrically ad­ justed with the ignition key removed, never leave children unattended in the
vehicle. Unsuperv ised use of the electr ic
seat adjustments may cause serious in­
jury.
- To reduce the r isk of injury in the case of
sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must neve r ride in a moving ve­
hicle wi th the seatback recl ined. Safety
belts and the airbag system offer maxi ­
mum protection on ly when the seatback
is upright and the safety belts are prop­
erly posit ioned on the body. The more
the seatback is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating pos ition and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts!
- Always make sure the front seatbacks are
in the upright posit ion and securely
locked in place when dr iv ing .
Head restraints

The head restraints must be adjusted proper­
ly to provide protection.

The head restraints on the front seats can be

Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident
and personal injury.

- Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liq uids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is moving. In case
of an acc ident, sudden braking or other
veh icle movement, hot liquid could spill,
causing scalding burns. Spilled hot liquid
can also cause an accident and personal injury.
- Use only soft cups in the cupholder . Hard
cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident.

Ign ition on @
After switch ing the ignition on, the needles
move all the way up and then down.
If it is difficult to turn the key after you have inserted it into the ignit ion lock, turn the
steer ing whee l back and forth. This will take
the load
off the steering lock mechan ism and
you will be able to turn the key freely and start the engine .
Starting the engine @
In th is position the engine starts. While the
engine is start ing, the power supply to the
headlights and other e lectr ica l cons umers is
temporari ly inter rupted to conserve battery
power. After the engine has started, release
the key and it will return to position @.
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position

non-repeat lock prevents you from damaging
the starter when the engine is running.
A WARNING
- Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock while the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock causing loss of
control.
- If you have to leave your veh icle - even
for just a m inute - a lways remove the ig­
nition key and take it with you. This is es­
pecially important if you a re going to
leave ch ildren behind i n the vehicle. The
children co uld s tart the engine or use
other vehicle controls . Unsupervised use
of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows) can cause serious personal in­
juries.
@ Tips
I f the veh icle bat tery has been d isconnect­
ed and then reconnected, then you must
leave the key in pos ition @for abo ut 5
seconds before you can start the engine.

Starting and stopping
the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with your orig­
inal Audi key.
On vehicles with S tron ic*, the e ngine can be
sta rted in the neut ra l position N and in each
gear (1 - 7 a nd R).
" Set the park ing brake

dep ress the clutch peda l.
" Press and hold the brake peda l.
" Tur n the igni tion key to pos it ion @

peda l when sta rting the engine .
... Let go of the key as soon as the engine
starts - the starter m ust not cont inue to
run. On vehicles w ith S tronic, select gear
position N.
A cold engine may at first be loud after it has
been started. This is due to the hydraulic
valves bu ild ing up the oil p ressure . Th is is nor­
mal and no need for concern .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop
trying after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine about 30 seconds later .
A WARNING
- Never start or let the engine run in a con­
fined or enclosed area. Exhaust fumes
from the eng ine contain carbon mono x­
ide, a co lor less and odorles s gas. Carbon
monox ide can be fata l if inh aled.
- Never leave the engine id ling una ttend­
ed. An unat tended ve hicle with a runn ing
engine poses a danger of personal injury
or theft .
- With the engine r unning and a gear en ­
gaged, you have to hold the veh icle w ith
the foot bra ke.

The parking brake warning comes on only af ­
ter you hav e drive n for longer than 3 seconds
and faster than 5 mph (5 km/h).
The parking b rake warning light _
(USA)/ . (CON) illuminates when the parking
brake is set and you switc h on the ignition .
A WARNING
Always release the parking brake com­
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce the ir ef­
fectiveness and cause excess ive wear . This
could lead to brake failure and an accident .
On ly after the vehicle has come to com­
plete stop, should you f irm ly set the park­
ing brake and move the gearshift lever into
a gear.

- Never allow a nyone - especially small
children -to remain in the vehicle when
it is locked. Locked doors ma ke it mo re
difficult for rescuers to access the pas ­
senger compartment in the event of an emergency . Danger to life!
- Never leave c hildren unsupervised in the
vehicle . Children co uld re lease the park-

ing brake or move the gearsh ift leve r out
of gear. The vehicle could start to ro ll
away and cause an acc ident.
- No matter what the season is, the tem ­
perature in a parked ve hicle can reach
dangerous leve ls.
Starting on hills

Hill ho ld assist makes it eas ier to start on
hill s.
The system is activated when the brake peda l
is depressed
for a few second s.
After releasing the brake ped al, the brake
power is held for a
brief moment t o p reven t
the ve hicle from rolling back when starting . A t
this time, you can easi ly begin to move your
vehicle.
A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immed iate ly
after releasing the brake pedal, under
certa in circumstances, the vehicle would
begin to roll backwa rd . Dep ress the
brake peda l imm ediate ly o r engage the
hand b rake.
- Should t he eng in e sta ll, dep ress th e
bra ke peda l immediate ly o r engage the
ha nd br ake.
- In o rder to prevent the vehicl e from roll­
ing back unintentionally whe n starti ng in
s top-and-go tr affic, keep the br ake ped al
depressed fo r a few seconds be fore driv­
in g off .
