Moreover, depending on the model and the
eq uip ment, there may be additiona l instruc­
tion booklets delivered with your vehicle (for
examp le, Operating Instr uctions for your
Sound System, Navigation System, etc .).
If you are missing one of these publications,
or if you believe that the information is not
comp lete, contact your authorized Audi dea ler

The Warranty & Maintenance booklet
explains how yo u can keep you r Audi in top
driving condition by having it serviced regu lar­
ly and contains detai led information about
the warranties covering your Audi. Always
have the booklet with you when you take your
vehicle to an author ized Audi dealer for serv­
ice . Your Audi Service Advisor will record each
scheduled service and can answer any ques­
tions you may have regarding how to maintain
your ve hicle.

- Never open the engine compartment lid
if you see or hear steam, or if you see en­
gine coo lant dr ipping from the eng ine
compartment. You could bur n yourse lf.

no longer see or hear steam or coolant
escaping .
CD Note
- Mounting additional lights or ac cesso ries
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
ing effect of the radiator . At high outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spoi ler has been designed to
proper ly distribute the cooling air when
the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, th is could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­
heat. Ask your authorized Aud i dea le r fo r
ass istance.
Fuel gauge
The fuel ga uge works only when the ignition is
on. When the needle reaches the red area, the
warning light in the instrument cluster will i l­
luminate ¢

CD Note
Never run the tank completely d ry! An ir­
regular supply of fue l can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system . The catalyt ic converter
co uld then overheat and be damaged. Speedometer with odometer
The
speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The distance driven is shown in m iles (USA
models) or in kilometers (Canada mode ls) .
Lower odomet er
The lower odomete r shows the tota l number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer )
The upper odometer shows the total number of miles (kilometers) driven s ince you last re­
set the odometer back to zero. You can use
t hi s odometer when you want to keep track of
how many m iles (kilometers) yo u have driven
f o r a si ngle tr ip or e rrand. The last dig it ind i­
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 meters). Yo u can set
the trip odometer back to zero by pressing the reset button ¢
fig. 5.

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the in­
strument cluster, dEF will appea r in the trip
odometer and w ill s tay on. Co ntact your au ­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem cor­
rected .
Immobilizer
When the ignition is sw itched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automatic ally. .,..

If an unau thorized key was used , SAFE is dis ­
p layed continuously in the odometer display
field. The vehicle cannot be operated

Voltmeter display
The voltmeter shows the voltage in the vehi­
cle electrical system .
If the reading drops be ­
low 12 volts with the engine running, you
should have the power supply (batte ry and
generator) inspected by an a uthorized Audi
dealer .
(D Tips
Voltage can drop be low 8 vo lts when you
start the engine.
Warning/indicator lights
Description
The indicato r lights in the inst rument cluster
b link or t urn on. They indicate functions o r
mal funct ions

Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. The messages turn
off after a short
time. To d isp lay a message aga in, p ress the
Se t/Check button

is more than one malfunction , the indicator
lights will turn on one after the other for ap ­
proximately two seconds each.
Some ind icators lights in the disp lay can turn
on in several colors.
,8. WARNING
- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle information may result
in serious personal injury or vehicle dam­
age .
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance
off the
road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

-The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area . Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it
coo l down. Always exercise extreme cau­
tion when working under the hood

Malfunctions or faults will be ident ified ei­
ther with a red symbol (priority 1 -Dan­
ger!) or with a yellow symbol (priority 2 -
Warning) .
Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check
the function o f that system whe n you swi tch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the follow ing tab les. If one of
these indicator lights does not turn on, ther e
is a ma lf u nction in that system.
Red indicator lights
Red symbo ls indicate a prior ity ma lf u nction -

BRAKE/ (CD) Brake system
This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is o malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
I f the - (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada
models) symbol flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a ma lfunction
in the brake system. In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the d is­
play:

The light 1111 (USA)/ . (Canada) illumi­
n ates when the ig nitio n is tu rned on . It goes
ou t after the engine has bee n started and the
pa rking brake is fu lly released. This indicates
that the brake warning lig ht is functioning
properly.
If the br ake warning li ght do es not light up
w hen the engine i s cranking or the pa rking
bra ke i s a pplied, the re m ay be a malfun ction
in the electric al sy stem. In thi s cas e, cont act
y ou r Au di dealer .
If the ABS fai ls, the ABS warning/indicator
light

Parking brake set
T he pa rk ing brake warning ligh t-·
(Canada models) illuminates when the park­
ing brake is set . In addition, a warning tone
will sound after yo u have driven for longer
than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h).

- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety hazard! Stop the car and get profess ional
assistance .
-USA models: If both, the 1111 warning
light and the

on at the same time, the rear wheels
could lock up first unde r hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel b rakes can
cause loss of vehi cle con tro l and an acci­
dent. Have your veh icle repa ired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop . Drive s lowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- Canada models: If both, the b rake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
[iJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard

braking. Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of vehicle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
med iately by your authorized Audi dealer
or a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ion .
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
wh ile you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid rese rvoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
- Always keep in m ind that afte r several
brake applicat ions, yo u will need greater
pressure on the brake peda l to stop your
vehicle. Do not re ly on stra ined brakes to
respond w ith maximum stopp ing power
in c ritical situations. You must a llow for
increased bra king distances. The extra
dis tance used up by fad ing br akes could
lead to an acc ident .
~/ !lr Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in ­
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g .
airbags, pretensioners and i llum inates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.

I (USA models) • (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi ­
nates wh ile you are dr iv ing, or if it starts to
bli nk, then there is a ma lfunction somewhere
in the system . If the light does not illuminate
when you sw itch on the ignit ion, this also
means there is a ma lfunction .
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
t ems, cont act your author ized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the sa fety sys­
tems may not wo rk p roperly in an acci ­
dent.
4 Safety belt warning light
Applies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts .
The warning light . comes on for a few sec­
onds after the ignition is sw itched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety belt .

' 0 Generator '
This warning/indicator light detects a mal ­
function in the generator or in the vehicle 's
electrical system.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the eng ine has started.
If the . warning/indicator light illuminates
whi le you a re d riving, you shou ld contact yo ur
authorized Aud i dea ler. Since the vehicle bat­
tery is discharging, you shou ld sw itch off any
unnecessary electr ica l consumers (for exam­
ple, the air conditioner).
"l!:r. Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair .
If the . symbo l appears in the disp lay and
flashes, the o il pressure is too low . In add ition
to the symbol, the following message also ap­
pears in the display:
Switch off engine! Oil pres sure is too low
.,. Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
.. Shut the engine down.
.. Check the engine oil level¢

Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil leve l is too low, top off oil to
t h e proper level~

can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
tioning comp letely when the indicator lamp
switches
off.
If the 11 indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched
off with the [ID button.
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See
owner's manual
If the G1 ind icator lamp and the Ci] ABS indi­
cator lamp illuminate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electronic differential lock
is ma lfunction ing. This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes sti ll function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to you r authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the mal func tion corrected.

ABS/( (§) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/ind icator light fl!B (USA mod­
els)
;tlJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignit ion is switched on .
The light will go out after an automatic check
sequen ce is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate whe n you switch the ign ition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving .
The ESC indicator light a lso illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!

also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 13 and the
ABS wa rning illum inate
together there may be
a mal function in the ABS, and there may also
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
¢ .&.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.
In the event of a malfunction in the brake
system

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock
(EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system ¢
page 144.
See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
_& WARNING
- If the~ (USA models)/Ci] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi-
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos·
sible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light,
the
J$) warning light and the fl!B warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard
b rak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Have your vehicle repaired immediately
by your authorized A udi dealer or a quali­
fied workshop . Drive slow ly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.

If the Ill symbo l illuminates, contact your
author ized Audi dealer and have the oil sensor
inspected .
0 Battery voltage low

If the indicator light turns on and t he mes ­
sage appears, there may be limited starting
ability.
I f th is message turns off after a litt le wh ile,
the battery cha rged enough wh ile driving.
If the message does not turn off, have your
author ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction.
~ Fuel supply too low
When the~ symbo l illuminates, this means
there are about 2 .6 gallons (10 liters) of fue l
l eft in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

If the symbol lights up, even when the re is
ample fuel in the tank, and the text

appears in the display, there is a fault in the
system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

~ Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­ tive .
If a defect ive b ulb has been detected by the
sys tem or a ligh t bu lb burns out , the
l',sl sym­
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to te
ll yo u which bulb is burnt out and where it is
located. For example:
Rear left turn sign al
After 5 seconds, the message disappears . If
you want to reca ll the message into the dis­
play, p ress the CH ECK button

The re are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the disp lay:
- The light bulb has burnt out
c::>page 222.
-The fuse is "blown" c::> page 221, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bulb is de-
fective.
Have the bulb replaced or the connection re ­
paired by your authorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
A WARNING
-- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex- plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-vo ltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re ­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<@> Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
u re, the symbo l (USA models)/
¢@ ) ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or rep laced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler for assis­
tance if necessary.

part of the functional check after the en­
gine is started.

@:> Light/rain sensor defective
Applies to vehicles: with a utomat ic head lights
The indicator light indicates a defect in the
automatic headlights/automatic wiper sys­
tem.
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has
failed. For safety reasons, the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
A U­
TO . However, you can continue to turn the
lights on and off using the light switch . In the
case of a defect in the rain sensor, the w ind­
shie ld wiper lever functions are sti ll available.
Have the light/rain sensor checked as soon as
possible at an authorized Audi dealer.

The indicator light monitors vehicle damping .

@ Tips
If the ind icator lamp illum inates while you
are driving, there is a malfunct ion in the

The warning/indicator light monitors the
electrically retractable rear spoiler.
The warning/ind icator ligh t

- It comes on for about 3 seconds as a func­
t ion check when the ignition is sw itched on.
- It comes on if there is a malfunction in the
electrically retractable rear spoiler.

ill Tire pressure monitoring system
Applies to vehicles : wit h tire press ure mo nitor ing system
Tire pressure that is too low must be correct­
ed as soon as possible.
The warning/indicator lig ht
RE illuminates for
a few seconds after the ignition is turned on
as a function check. If the
RE warning light
comes on, pressure in at least one tire is too
l ow .
.,. Stop driving as soon as possible w ithout en­
dangering yourself and other drivers on the
road.

¢ ¢Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal.
Whenever you use the left
B or the right B
turn s ignal, the indicator light blinks . Whe n
you use the emergency flashe r, both indicator
lights flash.
If one of the turn signa l light bulbs bu rn out,
the turn signal w ill blink twice as fast as nor­
mal.
