-----·-·--
Fig . 91 Side view: Rea rvi ew came ra coverage area
Sen so rs in th e bumper
Sensors are located in the front and rear
bumpers . If these detect an obstacle, audible
and visual signals warn you. The range at
which the sensors begin to measure is approx
imately :
front side
3 ft (0
.90 m)
center 4 ft (1.20 m)
side 2 ft (0.60 m)
rear center 5.2 ft (1.60 m)
The closer you get to the obstacle, the shorter
the interval between the audible signals . A
continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is
less than approximately 1 foot (0.30 meters)
away. Do not continue dr iv ing farther .
If the distance to an obstacle remains con
sta nt, the volume of the distance warn ing
gradually drops after about four seconds (this
does not apply in the cont inuous tone range). ..,.
Rear vi ew camer a coverage area
The rearview camera shows you the a rea be
hind your vehicle in the navigation system dis
p lay. This area roughly corresponds to the
area in¢
fig . 90 and (!)¢ fig. 91. Orientation
lines and colored surfaces are projected in the
area shown, which can help you with parking
and maneuvering. Objects that are located in
an area that is not captured by the camera @
¢
fig. 91 and that are closer to the bumper
will not appear on the nav igation system dis
p lay.
We recommend that you practice park ing with
the rearview camera in a traffic-free location
or pa rking lot to become familiar w ith the sys
tem, the o rientation l ines, and their function.
There should be sufficient light and good
weather conditions when doing so.
I n the nav igat io n system disp lay, objects or
veh icles appear closer or fu rther away if:
Objects or vehicles appear closer or farther
away in the navigation system if:
- you are driving in reverse gear from a level
surface onto an incline, or a downward
slope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward pro-
truding objects.
The accuracy of the orientation lines and blue
surfaces dimin ishes if:
- the rearview camera does not provide a reli able image, for examp le, in poor visibility
cond itions or if the lens is dirty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
sun g lare and reflect ion .
Caring f or the re arvi ew cam era len s
The rearview camera is located i n the center
of the vehicle above the rear license plate bra cket. In o rder for the rearview camera to
f u nction properly, the came ra lens must be
kept clean and free of snow and ice .
- Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcoho l
based glass cleane r, and clean the lens with
a dry cloth.
Par king system 85
- Remove snow with a hand br ush and ice
preferably with a de-icing spray ¢(D .
A WARNING
-The parking system cannot replace the
driver's attention. The driver alone is re
sponsib le for parking and similar driving
maneuvers.
- Sensors have blind spots in wh ich objects
can not be detected. Pay spec ia l attent ion
to small children and an imals because
the sensors cannot always detect them.
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle's
sur ro undings, us ing the rearv iew mirro r
as well.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted from traffic by the rearv iew camera pic
tures in the navigat ion system display.
- If the position and the installation angle
of the camera has changed, for example,
after a rear end collision, do not conti nue
to use the system for safety reasons.
Have it checked by an au thori zed A ud i
dea ler or other q ualified workshop .
(D Note
-Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a
wa rni ng can disappear from the system's
detect ion range as they are app roached
and wi ll not continue to be signaled. Ob
jects such as barrier chains, trailer d raw
bars, narrow painted vertica l poles or
fences may not be detected by the sys tem, posing risk of damage.
- Never use warm or hot water to remove snow or ice from the rearv iew camera
lens because the lens could crack.
- Never use products that are abrasive when clean ing the lens.

Error messages
Applies to vehicles: with parking system advanced
There is an error in the system if the LED on
the
§J switch is blinking and you hear a con
tinuous alarm for a few seconds after switch ing on the parking system or when the park
ing system is already act ivated. Have your au
thor ized Audi dealer correct the error.
(D Tips
If an error has occurred before the ignition
is turned off, the LED in the~ switch w ill
blink the next time the ignit ion is switched
on, reverse gear selected, and the acoustic
pa rking system is activa ted.

Active rollover
protection system
Function
The active rollover protection system helps
protect vehicle occupants in the event of a rollover.
Fig. 104 Rollbar deployme nt range
Fig . 105 Rollbar deploye d
The active rollover protection system consists
of:
- two rollbars
- the safety belts with belt tens ioners
- th e windshield frame
- the rollover sensors .
The active rollover protection system provides
additional safety in the event of a rollover.
With in milliseconds, sensors deploy two roll
bars located behind the headrests
c> fig. 105.
The rollbars, reinforced windshield frame and
belt tensioners help protect vehicle occupants
in the event of a rollover.
Driving Safely 101
The rollover protection system functions
when the convertible top is both open and
closed.
_& WARNING
Do not use the area behind the headrests
c> fig. 104 as a storage area. This is the
area where the rollbars deploy. If the roll
over protection system is triggered, ob
jects placed there can be propelled
through the vehicle and make it more diffi
cult for the rollbars to deploy. This increas
es the risk for serious or life-threatening
injuries.
When is rollover protection deployed?
Rollover protection deploys in a collision or
rollover.
Depend ing on the collision, sensors through
out the vehicle and the control module trigger
the rollover system to deploy.
For safety reasons, rollover protection also de
ploys during front, side and rear collisions
above a certain level of sever ity.
& WARNING
Improperly worn safety belts increase the
risk of serious personal injury and death
whenever a veh icle is being used.
- Always make sure that all vehicle occu
pants are correctly restrained and stay in
a correct seating posit ion whenever the
vehicle is be ing used.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and
other important information
Qpage 105.
Safety belt preten
sioners
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear end collisions and in a
rollover above a particular severity, safety
belts in use are tensioned automatically.
The safe ty belts for the front seating positions
a re eq uipped with safety belt pretensioners.
The system is activated by sensors in front,
side and rear-end collisions and in a rollover of
great severity. This tightens the be lt and takes
up belt slack
c> .& in Service and disposal of
safety belt pretensioner on page 109.
Tak ing
up the slack helps to reduce forward occupant movement dur ing a coll is ion.
(Di Tips
The safety be lt pretensioner can only be
activated once.
- In minor frontal and side collisions, in
rear -end collisions and in accidents in
volving very little impact force, the safe
ty belt pretens ioners are not activated .
- When the safety belt pretensioner is ac
tivated, a fine dust is released . This is
no rm al and is not caused by a fi re in the
vehicle.
- The relevant safety requirements must
be obse rved when the vehicle or compo
nen ts of the system are scrapped. An au
thorized Audi dealer is familiar w ith
these reg ulations and w ill be pleased to
pass on the information to you.
Safety belts 109
- Be sure to observe all safety, envi ron
menta l and other regu lations if the vehi
cle or ind ividual parts of the system, par
t icu larly the safety belt or airbag, are to
be disposed. We recommend you have
your authorized Audi dealer perform this service fo r you .
Service and disposal of safety belt
pretensioner
The safety belt pretensioners are parts of the
safety belts on your Audi . Insta lling, remov
ing, servicing or repairing of be lt pretension
ers can damage the safety belt system and
prevent it from working correctly in a co lli
s ion.
There are some important t hings you have to
know to make sure that the effectiveness of
the system w ill not be impaired and that dis
carded components do not cause injury or pol
lute the environment .
& WARNING
Improper care, servic ing and repair proce
dures can increase the risk of pe rsonal in
jury and death by preventing a safety belt
pretensioner from activating when needed
or activating it unexpectedly:
- The belt pretensione r system can be acti
vated only once. If be lt pretensioners
have been activated, the system m ust be
replaced .
- Never repair, adjus t, or change any parts
of the safety be lt system .
- Safety belt systems incl uding safety belt
pretensioners cannot be repaired. Spe
cial procedures are required for removal,
installation and disposal of this system.
- For any wo rk on the safety be lt system,
we strongly recommend that you see
your authorized Audi dealer or qualif ied
technician who has an Audi approved re pa ir manual, train ing and spec ial equ ip
ment necessary .

- If you are unrestrained, lean ing forward,
sitting sideways or out of position in any
way, your risk of inj ury is much higher.
- You w ill also receive serious inju ries and
cou ld even be killed if you are up against
the a irb ag or too close to it whe n it in
flates - even with an Advanced Airbag
¢page 111 .
.&_ WARNING
-
A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat installed on the front passenger seat
w ill be seriously injured and can be k illed if
the front a irbag inf lates - even with an Ad
vanced Airbag System.
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the
front a irbag when a rearward-fac ing
child restraint has been installed on the
front passenger seat, nobody can abso l u te ly guarantee that deployment is im
poss ible in al l conceivable situations th at
may happen d uring the useful life of your

Advanced Airbag System components
T he front passenge r seat in yo ur vehicle has a
lot of very important parts of the Advanced
Airbag System in it . These parts include the
weight-sensing mat, sensors, wiring, brack ets, and more. The funct ion of the system in
the front passenger seat is checked by the
electronic control unit when the ignition is on .
The cont rol unit monito rs the Advanced A ir
bag System and turns the airbag indicator
l igh t on when a malfunct ion in the system

118 Airbag system
components is detected. The function of the
airbag indicator light is described in greater
detail below. Because the front passenger
seat contains important parts of the Ad
vanced Airbag System, you must take care to prevent it from being damaged . Damage to
the seat may prevent the Advanced Airbag for
the front passenger seat from doing its job in
a crash .
The front Advanced Airbag System
consists of the following:
-Crash sensors in the front of the vehicle that
measure vehicle acceleration/deceleration
to provide information to the Advanced Air bag System about the severity of the crash.
- An electronic control unit, with integrated
crash sensors for front and side impacts .
The control unit "decides " whether to fire
the front airbags based on the information received from the crash sensors. The control
unit also "decides" whether the safety belt
pre tensioners should be activated.
- An Advanced Ai rbag with gas generator for
the driver inside the steering wheel hub.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generator in
side the inst rument panel for the front pas
senger.
- A weight-sensing mat under the upholstery
padding of the front passenger seat cushion
that measures the total weight on the seat.
The information registered is sent continu
ously to the electronic control unit to regu
late deployment of the front Advanced Air
bag on the passenger side.
- An airbag monitoring system and indicator
light in the instrument cluster
¢page 121.
- The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on in the center of the instru
ment panel ¢
page 122, fig. 120 and tells
you when the front Advanced Airbag on the passenger side has been turned off.
- A sensor below the safety belt latch for the
front seat passenger to measure the tension
on the safety belt. The tension on the safety
belt and the weight registered by the
weight-sensing mat help the control unit "decide" whether the front airbag for the front passenger seat should be turned off or
not
¢ page 112, Child restraints on the
front seat -some important things to
know.
- A sensor in the safety belt latch for the driv
er and for the front seat passenger that
senses whether that safety belt is latched or not and transmits this informa tion to the
electronic control unit .
.&_ WARNING
Damage to the front passenger seat can
prevent the front airbag from working
properly.
- Improper repair or disassembly of the
front passenger and driver seat will pre
vent the Advanced Airbag System from
functioning properly.
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by qualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or
driver seat from the vehicle.
-Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat. If the weight
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sensing mat and send the
wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Air
bag System under the passenger seat
could be damaged, preventing them and
the airbag system from working proper ly.
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery that have not been specifical ly approved by Audi on the front seats .
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced
-
Airbag System from recognizing child .,..
