Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into
the rearmost position .
To avoid contact with the airbag whi le it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety belt provided adjusted correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following ma nner:
• Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upr ight
pos it ion. Do not ride with the seat reclined .
• Applies to vehicles with adjustable head re­
stra ints: Adjust the head restrain t so the up­
per edge is as even as possible with the top
of your head . If that is not possible, try to
adjust the head restra int so that it is as
close to this position as possible

the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied.

Seat memory
Description
Applies to vehicles: with memory function
The memory function allows you to quickly
and easily store and recall personal seating
profiles for the driver . The memory function is
operated through the master key and the
memory buttons in the driver's door .
The driver's seating profile is stored and as ­
s ig ned to the master key each time the vehicle
is locked. When you open the door, the seat
profile is automatically recalled. If two people
use one vehicle, it is recommended that each
person always uses "their own" master key .
Up to 2 seat profi les can be stored in the
memory buttons in the driver's door . Once

the arm. The arm swings back by itself and
automatically secures the beverage .
Closing cuphold ers
• To close the cupholder, press on the center
section between the two arms and push the
cupholder in the s lot as far as it will go.

Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident

-Never carry any beverage containers with
hot liquids, such as hot coffee or hot tea,
in the vehicle while it is moving. In case
of an accident, sudden brak ing or other

and fasteners in various places in the veh icle.

- On the left and right of the luggage com­
partment, behind the side trim .
- Garment hooks on the pilla rs in the rear of
the vehicle.
A WARNING
-- When driving, do not leave any hard ob -
jects on the rear w indow shelf o r allow
your pet to sit on the shelf. They co uld
become a h azard fo r vehicle occupants in
the event of sudden braking or a cr ash.
- Always remove objects from the instru­
men t panel. A ny item s not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle wh ile dr iv­
ing or when acce le rat ing or when app ly ­
ing the brakes or when driving around a
corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter conso le or other storage locations

aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash. Inspect the belts periodically.
Belts showing damage to webbing, bind­
ings, b uckles, or retractors must be re­
placed.

- If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
could damage the head restraints on the
r ear seat .
- Slide the belt guide on the outside safety
belt all the way up before folding the
ba ckr est back fo rward. Make su re the
seat belt is no t pinched o r damaged
when the rear seat backrest if folded back . Other objects sho uld be removed
from the rear seat bench to protect the
seatback from damage .

In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle w ill turn into heavy miss iles that can cause
serious injury . Items in the vehicle pick up ki­
netic energy wh ich var ies with the vehicle and
the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the
most sign ifi can t factor .
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10-lb (5 kg) object a re about
20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item would sudden ly be the
equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can
easily imagine the injuries that an item of that
weight flying freely through the passenger compartment can cause in a collision at a
speed considered relatively low .

To provide maximum protection, safety belts
must always be positio ned cor rectly on the
wearer's body .

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is equipped with an automat­
ic belt retractor on the shoulder be lt . T his fea­
ture locks the belt whe n the belt is pulled out
fast, dur ing hard braking and in an accident .
The belt may also lock when you drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driving the belt lets you move
freely.
Safety belt pretensioner s
The safety belts are equipped with a be lt pre­
tensioner that helps to t ighten t he safety belt
and remove s lack when the pretensioner is ac­
tivated. The function of the pretensioner is monitored by a warning light¢
page 20 .
Switchable locking feature
Every safe ty belt excep t the one on the driver
seat is eq uipped with a switchable locking fea ­
ture that
must be used when the safety belt is
used to attach a child safety seat . Be sure to
read the important information about this
feature¢

ger parts of the body into cr itical areas
like the abdomen.

-Improper repair or disassembly of the
front passenger and driver seat will pre­
vent the Advanced Airbag System from
functioning properly.
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by qualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or
dr iver seat from the veh icle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat. If the weight­
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sens ing mat and send the
wrong info rmation to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas­
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Ai r­
bag System under the passenger seat
cou ld be damaged, preventing them and
the airbag system from working proper ­
ly .
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery that have not been specifical­
ly approved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from recognizing child re­
straints or occupants on the front pas­
senger seat and prevent the side airbag
in the seat backrest from deploy ing prop­
erly.
- Never use cush ions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger
seat. The add itional padd ing will prevent
the weight-sens ing mat in the seat from
accu rately reg iste ring the ch ild restra int
or person on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function­ ing properly .
-If you must use a child restra int on the
front passenger seat and the chi ld re-

straint manufacturer's instructions re­
quire the use of a towel, foam cushion or
something e lse to properly position the
child restraint, make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OF F light comes
on and stays on whenever the ch ild re­
straint is installed on the front passen­
ger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immed i­
ately insta ll child rest raint in a rear seat­
ing position and have the airbag system
inspected by your authorized Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
s ide airbags supplement the protection of­
fered by the front three-point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters and the
adjustable head rest raints to help reduce the
risk of inj ury in a wide range of accident and
c rash situations. Be s ure to read the impor­
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Adv a need A irbag System
and the activation of the safety belt preten­
sioners depend on the deceleration measured
by the crash sensors and registered by the
electronic control unit. Crash severity depends
on speed and deceleration as we ll as the mass
and stiffness of the vehicle or object involved
in the crash .
On the passenger side, regardless of safety
belt use, the airbag will be turned off if the
weight on the passenger seat is less than the
amount programmed in the electronic control
unit. The front airbag on the passenger side
will a lso be turned off if one of the child safe­
ty seats that has been ce rtified under Fede ral
Motor Vehicle Safety S tanda rd 208 has been
recognized on the seat. The

If except ional circumstances requ ire the
use of a forward-facing child restra int on
the front passenger's seat, the ch ild's safe­
ty and well-being require that the follow­
ing special precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-fac ing seat has
been designed and certified by its manu­

Children up to about 40 lbs . (18 kg) are best
protected in child safe ty seats designed for
their age and we igh t. Experts say th at the

skeletal structure, particularly the pelvis, of
these children is not fully developed, and they must not use the vehicle safety belts without
a suitable child restraint.
It is usually best to put these children in ap­
propriate booster seats. Be sure the booster
seat meets all applicable safety standards.
Booster seats raise the seating position of the
child and reposition both the lap and shoulder
parts of the safety belt so that they pass
across the child's body in the right places. The routing of the belt over the child's body is very
important for the child's protection, whether
or not a booster seat is used . Children age 12
and under must always ride in the rear seat.
Children who are at least 4 ft. 9 in. (57 in­
ches/1.45 me ters) tall can generally use the
vehicle 's three point lap and shoulder belts .
Never use the lap belt portion of the vehicle's
safety belt alone to restrain any child, regard­ less of how big the child is. Always remember
that children do not have the pronounced pel­
vic structure required for the proper function
of lap belt portion of the vehicle's three point lap and shoulder belts. The child's safety ab­
solutely requires that a lap belt portion of the
safety belt be fastened snugly and as low as possible around the pelvis. Never let the lap
belt portion of the safety belt pass over the
child's stomach or abdomen.
In a crash, airbags must inflate within a blink
of an eye and with considerable force. In order
to do its job, the airbag needs room to inflate
so that it will be there to protect the occupant
as the occupant moves forward into the air­ bag.
A vehicle occupant who is out of position and
too close to the airbag gets in the way of an
inflating airbag. When an occupant is too
close, he or she will be struck violently and
will receive serious or possibly even fatal in­
jury.
In order for the airbag to offer protection, it is
important that all vehicle occupants, especial­
ly any children, who must be in the front seat
because of exceptional circumstances, be properly restrained and as far away from the
airbag as possible. By keeping room between
the child's body and the front of the passen­ ger compartment, the airbag can inflate com­
ple tely and provide supplemental protection
in certain frontal collisions .
A WARNING
-Not using a booster seat, using the boos-
ter seat improperly, incorrectly installing a
booster seat or using the vehicle safety
belt improperly increases the risk of seri­
ous personal injury and death in a collision
or other emergency situation. To help re­
duce the risk of serious personal injury
and/or death:
- The shoulder belt must lie as close to the
center of the child's collar bone as possi­
ble and must lie flat and snug on the up­
per body. It must never lie across the
throat or neck . The lap belt must lie
across the pelvis and never across the
stomach or abdomen. Make sure the belt lies flat and snug. Pull on the belt to
tighten if necessary .
- Failure to properly route safety belts
over a child's body will cause severe inju­
ries in an accident or other emergency
