Displaying intermediate time and pausing
timing
• To disp lay an intermediate time, press the
l ower section of the wiper switch @. The in­
termediate time appears in line
CD and is
marked with*.
• To pause timing, press the lower section of
the wiper switch @again.
• To continue timing, press the upper section
of the w iper switch @.
If t iming is paused, you can conti nue it later
even if you switch the ign it ion off.
Evaluating times and continuing or
resetting timing
Appl ies to vehicles: with lap timer
You can evaluate the fastest, slowest and
average lap times.

• To eva luate lap times, press and hold the
I RESET I ¢ page 29, fig. 21 @ button for ap­
proximately 2 seconds. The display shows
the fastest lap"+", the slowest lap"-" and
the average lap time "0".
• To continue t iming for addit ional laps, press
the wiper switch @.
• To reset th e timer to zero, press and hold
the
I RESET I button again for approximate ly
2 seconds.
• To switch the lap timer off completely,
press the
I RESET I button briefly.
@ Tips
-Saved lap times cannot be individually
deleted from the total results.
- The saved lap timer values will not be
l ost after turning the ignit ion off .
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) &ii in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
T he warning/indicator light ill uminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the id le has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly.
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv ­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer.
If the light il luminates, the electronic speed
limiter may also be malfunctioning. For more

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Boa rd Diagnostics monitors the compo ­
nents of your emission contro l system. Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code. In case of a .,.

malfunction, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control module memory.
The MI L light may a lso illuminate if there is a
l eak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem . If the light illuminates after a refuelling,
stop the veh icle and make sure the fue l filler
cap is properly closed ¢
page 178.
In o rder to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic equipment (gener ic scan tool
for OBD).
I n o rder to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (DLC) . The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release ¢
fig. 24.
Your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified
service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair .
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a coll is ion!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . T his is less than the
maximum speed o f yo ur vehicle. To reduce the
risk of s udden tire failure and loss o f control if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an electronic speed limit­
er. The electronic speed limiter prevents your
veh icle from going faster than the tire speed

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key out and back
in place, press the re lease button

@ Valet ke y
The valet key on ly fits the lock in the driver's
door and the ignition lock. If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, you are well-ad­
vised to turn over the valet key only.
Be aware that the rear lid and glove compart­
ment can be opened from inside the vehicle
using the release buttons .

The eme rgency key is only for temporary use if
the vehicle key should be lost or misplaced

keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro ­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­ supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in ser ious in­
jury.

- If you open the driver's door with the key
left in the ignit ion lock, a chime will
sound . Th is is your rem inder to remove
the key and lock the door.
- For security reasons, rep lacement keys
are only ava ilable from Audi dealers .

Master key with remote control
The remote control allows you to lock or un­
lock the vehicle electronically .
The transmitter and battery are located in the
head of the remote control. The receiver is lo­
cated inside the vehicle. The maximum effec ­
tive range depends on several things . Remem­
ber, if the battery is wea k, the effective range
decreases.
If you need to replace the remote control, or if
you need to have it repaired, you must see
your author ized Audi dealer. Only then can
you use the key again.
(D Tips
- If the ignition is sw itched on, the remote
control system is deactivated .
- The remote control system can be affect­ ed by other systems operating in the
same frequency range close to the vehi­
cle, such as mobi le telephones, televi­
sion broadcasting stations, etc.

Master key battery replacement
Each master key contains a battery housed

Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthor­
ized use of your vehicle.
A computer chip ins ide your key automatica lly
deactivates the electron ic immobilizer when
you insert the key in the ign ition lock. When
you remove the key from the ignition lock, the
electronic immobilizer is automatically acti­
vated once again.
A WARNING

Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys ­
tems such as power w indow leading to se­
rious pe rsonal injury.
(D Tips
- T he ve hicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used. The vehicle may not
start if another radio device s uch as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is
located on the key ring .

accidentally press the power locking
switch.
- Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
@ Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment a ll locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to g ive access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside.
- If the power locking system should mal­
function, you can lock each door individ­
ually using the vehicle key .
- If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fue l tank flap in an
emergency

- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe!

PANIC Button

The remote controls allows you to:
- lock or unlock the vehicle
- select ively unlock the rear lid.
The turn signals will flash briefly whenever
you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interi­
or light will come on or go off whenever you
open or close the driver's door .

you use the key again.

-The operation of the remote control key
can be temporarily disrupted by interfer­
ence from transmitters in the vicinity of
the vehicle working in the same frequen­
cy range (e.g. a cell phone, radio equip­
ment) .
- In order to make sure the locking func­
tion is working, you should always keep
your eye on the vehicle to make sure it is
properly locked .
- Do not use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may unin­
tentionally lock the vehicle, and then you
would set off the anti-theft alarm when
you try to start the engine or open a
door. In case this happens anyhow, push
the unlock button
CD .
- Use the panic function only if you are in
an emergency situation.
Resetting the remote control
The remote control must be reset if the vehi­
cle does not unlock .
.,,. Press the unlock button CD on the remote
control.
.,,. Manually unlock the driver's door lock with
the mechanical key within 30 seconds.

Locking and unlocking the vehicle from
inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocked from
the inside using the power locking switch .

If you lock the vehicle using the power locking
switch , please note the following:
- You cannot open the doors or the rear lid
from the
outside (increased security, for ex ­
ample when you are stopped at a red light).
- You can unlock and open the doors from the
inside by pulling on the door handle .
-If the driver's door is opened (after you have
locked the vehicle from the inside using the
power locking switch), the door will remain
unlocked to prevent you from locking your­
self out of your vehicle. After you close the
door, you have to lock the driver 's door
again.
- If you have a crash and the airbag is activat-
ed, the doors automatically unlock. ..,.

The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi­
b le alarm and turns on the emergency flasher
if an unauthor ized interference with the vehi­
cle is sensed by the system.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti -theft a larm system is switched on
when you lock the driver's door manually us­
ing the fold-out key, or when you use the re­
mote control. The system is activated approxi­
mately 30 seconds after the veh icle is locked .
The indicator light ~

rapidly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti-theft a larm system is switched off
on ly when you use the remote contro l to un­
lock your veh icle. If you do not open a door
within 30 seconds after you have un locked
with the remote cont ro l, the vehicle will lock
itself again automatically.
If you lock just the dr iver's doo r using your
key, the front passenger's door and the rear
lid remain locked.
When will the anti theft alarm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked , the alarm system
monitors and protects the following pa rts of
the vehicle:
- engine compa rtment
- luggage compartment
- doors
- ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of the doors, the engine
hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the igni­
tion is turned on.
The anti-theft a larm system will also go off
when the battery is disconnected.
You can also trigge r the alarm by pressing the
PANIC button on your remote-control key.

gency. Press the PANIC button again to turn
off the alarm .
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when trigge red?
The alarm system is switched off when you
unlock the vehicle using the remote -control
key or when the ignition is switched on . T he
alarm will also switch itself off when it comes
to the end of its cycle .
Emergency flasher
The emergency flasher will blink briefly when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid a re prop­
erly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check
the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make
sure they are properly closed. If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti ­
theft alarm sw itched on, the emergency flash­
ers will blink only after you have closed the
door or lid .
(!) Tips
For the anti-theft alarm system to func­
tion properly, make sure all veh icle doors
and windows are closed before leaving the
vehicle.

A WARNING
- Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, especially with access to vehicle
keys. Unsupervised use of the keys can
result in starting of the engine and use
of vehicle systems such as power win­
dows, etc. which could resu lt in serious
injury.
- Remember -you can still open or close
the power w indows for about ten mi­
nutes after the ignition is sw itched off.
Only when e ithe r of the front doors a re
opened are the power windows switched
off.
- Be careful when closing the windows .
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!
- Always remove the ignition key whenever you leave your vehicle .
- If you lock your vehicle from the ou tside,
no one, especia lly children, sho uld re­
main in the vehicle.
- Do not stick anything on the windows o r
the windshield that may interfere with
the driver's fie ld of vision.
(D Tips
- When the doors are opened, the win­
dows are automatically lowered 10 mm .
- The windows can still be opened and
closed for about ten minutes after the
ignition has been turned off. The power
w indows are not shut off unt il one of the
front doors is opened.
Convenience close/open feature
You can close or open the windows from out­
side when you lock or unlock your car with the
key.
